Thank you for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

"General Faulk, I cannot believe you risked America's two most important defense assets on bloodsports and gambling! What do you have to say for yourself?"

"What I have is access to a space ship. Do you have a space ship, Senator?"

"Well, we can rent one from private industry..."

"Can it travel 3,500 light years in two days?"

"Not... currently..."

"Two, holla holla, I got some space dolla!" (<--Paraphrased, as this something Faulk would never say.)

"I see. And... what can we purchase with this 'space dolla'?"

"Some magic space thing that will make your constituents happy enough to keep re-electing you until you are able to bleed the system dry and retire an incontinent, withered old husk. Like a space-sampo or... I don't know. Space racism."

"Here is your medal, Faulk."

Aaand scene.

BTW, a "sampo" is something that might only exist in one movie done by MST3K, called "The Day the Earth Froze." It's one of those Russo-Finnish films (the original title is "Сампо," apparently pronounced "SAM-po") where some witch kidnaps a girl, and the "hero" and his blacksmith buddy who is the girl's... brother (?) sail off to rescue her. The hero basically does nothing, whereas the blacksmith makes a (living) horse that the hero rides around and clears some field of snakes, then the blacksmith, at the witches request, makes a sampo, which is a magic thing that makes gold and wheat, as I recall. Which is an odd combo for a magic item, but presumably the story was maybe from a legend originating from poor Russian peasants, or was made to entertain poor Russian peasants, and while most people would be fine with a thing that just spit out gold, a poor Russian peasant might almost be more interested in the wheat.

I'm not sure it ever was a proper Russian fairy tale, as if you google it, I think the first thing that comes up is the MST3K episode. So maybe it was just invented for that movie. But I thought I'd reference it in the above dialog, so the few people who get it before reading all this will feel special.

Love it. Faulk is being upfront with his selfish personal interest, but he’s also a good commander with a solid grasp on the actual benefits to be derived from this.

I believe that I remember from a series of Lawrence Block novels that a "hat" was slang for $25. So, "astro-hat", 25 space bucks.

“And we will not, I repeat not, call this operation ‘Air America’” /s

However intergalactic members only jackets remain lost to history

Sampo is from Kalevala, the Finnish national epic that collects tales from both Finnish and Karelian sources. Sampo is made by the the smith Ilmarinen, whose other masterpieces include a golden bride. In the tale he is courting the daughter of the witch Louhi, ruler of the North (implied to be Lappland). The tale is full of cool stuff. But in addition to gold and grain, it also makes salt. These were the cornerstones of wealth in rural society.

What is she doing with her hand in panel 3? I’d normally assume she’s “returning it to default”, except the previous page clearly shows that it’s properly hand-shaped just before this moment.

Thomas Dorner

With the space hat she looks a bit similar to those guys from the very first Star Trek pilot. (TOS, "The Cage" with Captain Pike)

Fogel

I love both ladies igniting their cigar with their own finger fire

Alessandro

I just realized that he is designed after Al from Quantum Leap lmao.

Astro hats? Oh God TF2 just dropped an update, didn't they?

Jon Gibson

It is terrifying that cora can shoot blue/white flames out of a hologram.

Anton Schleef

I love Max's expression in the last panel to the astro-hat hologram. Now we just need for it to be a fashion that is most worn by men for the full comedy effect.

IvyReed

There is nothing unfortunate about the return of bell bottoms, the space variety or domestic!

Thisguy

I like Faulk. He's realized that these respectable space mercenaries have already done a lot for his team with little reward, and they're very useful to have around as they give access to a lot of things he otherwise wouldn't have (especially if he doesn't want to be 100% reliant on Deus for space tech). He wants to keep them happy, and if high stakes pit fighting keeps them happy... For all the potential bad things that could go wrong, there's a lot of good things. Any foray off world gives another handful of experience, intel and tech trinkets. And it would be very informative to know how Max stacks up against some of the most powerful fighters and war machines in the Galaxy.

Hugh Eckert

"Kids come running for the great taste of Sampo!" Also, love Max's expression in the last panel...

Xandra

Sampo is from the Finnish legend of Kalevala, constructed by Ilmarinen.

Eric Loken

I will echo the love for Max's face in that last frame. It is very much a "WTF is that on your head?" look. In this case, the W might be "Why".

Eleanor Asher

If you ever did a spin-off of Cora's crew and their hijinx in the galaxy, I'd be so there for it.
