Thank you for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

Oh, you wanted examples of gravity slasher movies? Shear, rated Glip-Glorp 5 for overabundant teenage necking, sexual situations and violence. Crush, rated Glip-Glorp 7 for inveterate exposure of secondary sexual organs, profanity, sexual situations, and violence. The Spagettifier. The granddaddy of the genre, rated Glip-Glorp 9 for unrelenting nudity, shower scenes, girl aliens of one species making out with girl aliens of another species (and not the species you'd think), sexual situations, profanity, gore, sexual situations involving gore... like, two piles of gore make out, violence, blasphemy, and questionable financial advice. It's a classic.

Event Horizon is the consummate "Hyperspace is/Wormholes lead to hell," but of course there's also Doom, Half-Life... which isn't hell, but those portals still lead to a dimension full of jerks. Obviously Warhammer 40K. I don't know how it works in Warhammer Zero K. I'm going to assume that wizards using teleport spells have a 5% chance of bringing demons along with them. I actually don't know anything about Warhammer Fantasy. I assume they're connected, like, the dark elves in WhF worship Slaanesh or Tzeentch instead of Lolth. I could google it, but if I don't then it allows someone break out their esoteric Warhammer knowledge and a soapbox.

Then there's edge cases like the Natural Selection asymmetrical multiplayer mod for Half-Life. It's less "warpdrive is the devil" and more "deep space has mysterious fungus." I think. Or maybe there is some sort of hyperdrive that attracts evil extra dimensional spores like a bug zapper minus the zapper. I'm not sure. I played it 2 or 3 times.

Oh, and I guess The Expanse, where defeating distance attracts evil shadow Pacmen. Spoilers. Look, if you haven't watched The Expanse, it's baaaasically the best Sci-Fi thing out there. I think it just edges out Stargate SG-1 and DS9, which are my other tippy-top faves.

Oh, I just thought of another one, From Beyond. One of Jeffery Combs's earlier movies. Just after Reanimator, I think. Anyway, From Beyond is based on an H.P. Lovecraft book, and on that note, I suppose any movies with summoning circles, whether they're drawn in lamb's blood or are created by a bunch of janky electronics are all in the same... over-genre. Of course, the whole point of summoning pentagrams is collect calls to hell, so that doesn't count in the whole "Who could have foreseen this outcome" category.

Being a lover of B and C grade horror flicks, I agree on Event Horizon, but am admittedly a little crushed that "The Spagettifier" isn't an actual movie.

Harem finding the best seat in the house. Dude must have an iron will ❤️😆

There's also a novel called This Alien Shore. I also used it in one of my own short stories, but since I never saw/read any of these I did it in my own way. If the Spaghettifier doesn't really exist it should. The people giving questionable financial advice should be the first to go.

It's part of his training, navigate an asteroid field with the captain in your lap. The asteroid field is a simulation, the captain is not.

CSquared

I call Event Horizon "Warhammer 2k."

Stephen Hall

Dammit! I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to find that one..

Alex Peake

40k and WH Fantasy are technically different settings that "happen to use" the same gods/demons. I believe in lore WHF teleportation works the same was as 40k FTL: wrap yourself in a bubble of projected psychic/magic energy and throw yourself through the warp. Hoping nothing pops the bubble. Unless you are an ork, then its just the collective believe of the orks that it'll work that makes it work. Same way their guns/tech works.

Randall Wald

Larry Niven's classic sci-fi novel series Known Space also includes the "staring out the window while traveling FTL drives you mad" trope, and given its age it might be the originator of the idea.

Town Crier

I guess that Space doesn't have any rules about "Not distracting the driver". Just sayin'.

Town Crier

Not using the proper shielding just brings one closer to the Outer Gods and attracts the attention of the Greater Shoggoths.

Derek Leader

Making a wormhole would require operating from outside the universe to 'grip' and 'fold' the universe, then 'poking' a hole and 'sewing' up the broken sides. This would require all the energy of a couple universes to accomplish. So they could, like, put up a poster or something while they're at it.

akrasia

There are no Greater Shoggoths. They just THINK they're greater.

Stephen Gilberg

I'd be more worried about going mad if the travel took a boringly long time.

Teksura

The Spaghettifier would haveonly been rated Glip-Glorp 8 except that was some REALLY questionable financial advice.

Jeremy

Gravitational lensing just makes them look greater.

Richard Riley

I'd have assigned the trope to Friedrich Nietzsche's "Beyond Good And Evil," for the quote " And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

William Elliott

If you haven't read the books, I won't spoil it, but The Expanse's evil shadow Pacmen is ... worse than you know.

davebarrack

I listened to the last 3 books on audio. For a while they were free if you had an audible membership. Yeah, they were pretty naughty.

William Elliott

I would say...cranky... I mean if someone gave me stellar sized tumor and kept poking me in the proverbial ass from it, I might get pretty cranky too.

LucasTheLost

What are the odds that Harem is not so subtly grinding on red spikyface there? ALTUS. Man, time to edit the grrlpower cast page.

LucasTheLost

You take that back! Mister Trashbags is awesone!

LucasTheLost

I didn't know Altus named his dick "William"!

Christopher Upton

Star Gate the RPG is fun. I'd invite you to join our campaign, but I'm pretty sure you don't live close enough and remote via Discord is awkward

Patrick

The joke at the end wasn't great.

Nechochwen

Didn't you have a throwaway line about the atherium conduit being essentially stabilized WH40k warp travel?

eddi_TBH

She found the best seat in the house to watch the dive into the black hole.

Greg Morrow

When Harem spawns a new body, does she get to decide about its characteristics? In other words, why is this body covered in freckles but the others aren't? I had assumed that elements like hair color were artificial, but if she can manifest freckles, she can manifest hair color. How extensive can the modifications be?

davebarrack

They look like her strawberry blonde version. That's her "unmodified" form, which is to say no hair dye and tattoos.

Mathew Aaberg

Hey question, if she respawns a dupe can she respawn an entirely new one or are the "copies" she has all she gets. I ask because if she has control, 1000 tiny Daphne's would be terrifying.

davebarrack

No, she periodically grows her ability enough to create a new copy of herself, but once she does, that new dupe is "fixed." She can "unsummon" it, and hold it in whatever hammerspace she stores them in, and teleport it to a new location, but the number she can make is set and only grows periodically.

Has your Gellar field generator been serviced within the last 20 million light years?
