Thank you for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

I know what you're wondering. If Gaxgy has a treasure hoard, and he frequents a station that has several "Petty Gold" lockers, wouldn't he just clean them out each time? Well, the answer is simply that he's allowed to grab a handful each time he drop by, same as everyone.

It got me thinking, if dragons are attracted to gold because it's valuable, what would they do in a post scarcity society? I guess their hoard might shift to something else valuable, like information. But I don't know about a dragon sitting on top of a pile of thumb drives, so maybe instead they'd be a librarian, shushing everyone who wants to check out their collection of rare books? I dunno. It's a cool visual, but I feel like there's more to the "dragon like gold" than they're greedy. Cause really, it's not like the dragon goes into town to buy craft honey and swing by the butcher and knickknacks for the cave. They don't have a need for money, they can eat a herd of sheep if they want and what's the local constabulary going to do? So I keep going back to my theory that gold is pretty and clinky and used for nesting and impressing the ladies. But then, why would lady dragons hoard hordes? Of course, there's no reason a lady dragon can't enjoy having a clinky pile of gold and gems to roll around on. Maybe if it's a mating thing, they horde so they can brutally reject any guy with a small one. (Insert joke here about lady dragons being just like lady... ladies.)

Anyway, on to stuff about this page. Showing a "Super Smart" a bunch of alien technology seems like one of those force multiplier situations. I did like in Endgame when Rocket told Stark to calm down, that he was only a genius on Earth. But Stark was able to accomplish a lot starting from Earth tech levels and infrastructure. And also, Rocket, you're a genius raccoon-GELF thing, but you're not rolling around in a suit of nanobot armor that allows you to fly and shoot laser beams from a bottomless energy source. But each genius to his own. My point is, what would Stark or Reed Richards or uh... another Super Genius... Man, I'm blanking out. I was trying to think of an evil super genius, but honestly, most of them are either pretty dumb or are simply one hit wonders. Doc Oc made wiggly tentacle arms that interfaced with his nervous system and could move in ways that human limbs don't. That's fucking impressive. But then he kind of just... robbed banks and fixated on the fact that Spider-Man kept whooping his ass. Green Goblin made a flying little bodyboard thing. It's the size of an open pizza box, and can carry a human being, no, at least two human males. I'm sure there was a scene where he was kidnapping Mary Jane while towing Spidey behind. That's fucking impressive. But then he uses it to fly around tossing goblin-themed grenades and... rob banks, I assume. Yeah, I know, golden/silver age comics weren't always the deepest analysis of the social-economic motivations of super villains. But still.

What was my point... Oh right. So what happens if Reed Richards or Stark or Doctor Doom got a month to study Nidavellir. (The Star-Forge used to create Stormbreaker.) I'm sure there have been plenty of examples of super smarties getting their hands on alien tech, but it never really caused any significant shifts in power levels or Earth's tech level.

We'll see what comes of Digit getting elbows deep into a Starforge.

The Maker was a stupid version of Reed Richards. made a race of superhumans and got pissy because they didn't love him unconditionally

Michael Obert

Personal growth is highly overrated. Also that last Digit panel just makes me fall more in love with her ❤️😆

Torabi

I have admittedly strange tastes, but that third panel may have what I want most in a woman!

SilverScrolls

Dr. Doom is a genius possibly super who's a villain who took over and rules a country using the dignitary privileges therin to commit crime without ever going to jail. Apocalypse and Thanos are also super geniuses who do some crazy stuff. Lex Luthor is definitely a super genius who could easily usher in a solar punk future but because he's a dick who hates that Superman looks at him with mild pity just does ass hole things. Gorilla Grod is a pretty good super genius villain as well. Arguments could also be made for Superman considering he has all the knowledge of the hyper advanced kryptonians and part of his super set is super intelligence (he has said the only person who's ever matched his thinking speed and also the only person to beat him at chess is the flash believe it or not) but with all that tech and smarts he doesn't try and do much more than stop bank robbers and chastise Lex for being a capatlist prick

Sarazarus

On the geniuses given a chance to study, in Exiles they visit a dimension where basically all marvel characters are enslaved by Mojo since childhood, and they free everyone, and the second Reed richards, Tony Stark, Spidey, Pym, etc start to explore tech, if I remember correctly, the phrase used was "it's like, you give them a bike, and they make it run up walls"

Mike

For a minute I thought it was Digit speaking in the second panel. I was like wtf is going on?

The Cabin Boy

Dragons and gold: as a biological creature, dragon flight & flame were probably both related to Hydrogen. Which a body could produce organicly but would likely produce acid as a byproduct. Gold being inert would be left behind as everything else was destroyed.

Town Crier

Welp. We now know that Tink is linked into the ship's audio and video projection system. Fun stuff. THIS is what Deus wanted when he hit the button. Poor little guy. Someone should have told him that we were monitoring him to make sure he didn't take any restricted tech back to his home world. *sigh* They are SOOO adorable when they first start out to conquer the Universe.

Town Crier

Oh. And, yeah, like Sydney can turn her brain off. She's a woman. They ain't wired that way. More like she just turns off control, so exhausting, and lets the ADHD run free in the back yard.

Town Crier

That box he's carrying is full of HAMMMERS. Basically a hammer, but high-tech, which means it hits things, accurately, every time, except for your thumb, or the equivalent. Yay, nanotechnology!

William Elliott

STORY wise, the biggest issue with super genius level characters getting to study more advanced tech is power creep. Tony gets to study Asgardian tech, figures out how to do it better, you get God Breaker level Ironman armor... and then you have to bring him back down to a normal level or hes never utilized because then you're using a nuclear hammer to swat a house fly... collateral damage goes off the rails...like planet cracking level. So a practical way to limit that is available tech level limits. Tony's dad saying "I was limited by the technology of my time" which DOES eventually allow for advancement, but at a writer limited pace...maybe even with technology/material involved setbacks Example: Time travelers bring AK47s back to the US Civil War. Without the technical data package, chemistry for smokeless powder, and modern manufacturing and metalurgy, the people of the day can USE it, but they are a couple tech levels away from being able to duplicate it reliably [using lead bullets and blackpowder to reload cartridges alone would gum up even an AK]

Digit stared into the Abyss, the Abyss stared back... And they both giggled maniacally... be afraid... be very, very afraid...

Sharien

sooo... whats up with the rubber ducky?^^

Don Satow

If you think about it, in 10+ years between iron man and Endgame in the MCU, Tony Stark goes from physical armor to nanobots. So Stark tech advances rapidly. But beyond Stark tech, Shield equipment also goes up in tech beyond what we are capable of. None of which are created by Stark Tech as Stark has washed his hands of military equipment by that time and in any case is being mass produced. The problem is, the invention portion and the mass production portion of technology takes a lot of time. The real world current breed of Lithium batteries was invented in the mid 90s. But they only started really being on sale in late 2010s. It took 20 years to convert the new tech in to a manufacturable form. In Iron Man I, the scientists even complain about this to Stane, even if they know how its possible, its just not easy to replicate how Stark did it.

JasonAW3

That's... not altogether true... If you put someone in place who understands the base technologies, chemistries, and physics to make such things, you can usually parse out how such things are done. There's a saying in engineering, "Knowing that something CAN be done, puts you 50% of the way to being able to do the thing..."

Hugh Eckert

I'm sure there's nothing to be concerned about.

PucThePlayful

In regards to dragons and gold... The Cabin Boy kind of touched on this in his comment but I'm going into more detail. There was an old Rankin and Bass animated film Flight of Dragons that explained that dragon flight used hydrogen generated by digesting limestone. That generates lift and they expell it as fire due to a thimble like growth in the roof of their mouths that ignites it with natural electricity. This can happen while they sleep, so they can't use any kind of regular bedding. Instead they choose to sleep on a soft metal with a high melting point... Gold. Hence the need for a dragon to have a horde of gold. I always loved that explanation, and that movie.

William Elliott

fair point, but there are still certain hurtles that cannot be overcome just with knowledge it CAN be done. For instance, Elon Musk's engineers know how to build a rocket. They have the historical precedent that you can send men to the moon. Its still taking an iterative process to do it better than a Saturn V/Apollo mission or to even get up TO that stage.

'Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy' ref?

davebarrack

It's actually the logo for "Hamdingers" which was some short lived SPAM-ish canned ham thing I think. It's really a reference to MST3K, and the box really contains an escape pod.

Anton Schleef

That is a good, scientifically sound explanation. The slightly more mystical, but still mostly scientific, one I prefer is that dragons, unlike lizards, are warm-blooded. However, due to body mass they actually produce a _lot_ of body heat, so something with a high thermal conductivity while having a, relatively, high melting point also makes a very nice cool bedding. Hence, gold. Sure, copper also shares those traits, but as you mentioned, gold is also a soft metal which makes it more comfortable to lay on. Really, neither of those explanations are exclusive, and can even be a combined reason, but the reason I definitely lean towards the latter is that I have a similar problem with keeping cool enough to sleep well as my body can really crank out the heat when it wants to. I've tried using a cooling mattress pad (you know, the ones that pull heat away from you), and my body put out enough heat in a short enough time frame that after a couple of months there was a discolored over-heated patch where I laid at on it that no longer transfers heat well. You can only see the discoloration from the underside, but it's in the rough shape of where I lay in the rough area of where I lay, which is why I know it was caused by my body heat and not the drier.

MaxBigfoot

I've seen a couple of fics where the gold hoard explanation was they needed it to roll in to remove loose scales. I kinda take that one with some tongue in cheek.

Anton Schleef

I think you mean a human. I know a couple of women who don't have any problems 'turning their brain off' in the colloquial sense, and I'm a guy who very emphatically _can't_ do so. Hell, yesterday I was trying to do a Wilderness Origin start in Stellaris, but because I'd responded to a Reddit post about a mainline Final Fantasy being a Monster Tamer game I kept getting replies from the OP that I chose to respond to (mostly because said OP needed some serious help about how to respond without sounding like an AI or Troll). Over the course of a couple of hours I where spent maybe an hour or so typing up replies I'd figured out a way to make it work and still keep the complex party dynamics and interactions that Final Fantasy has predominantly been known for, _*AND NEVER ONCE PUT ANY EFFORT INTO HOW TO DO IT*_, and it wasn't by copying how it was done in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor or Lufia: The Ruins of Lore and it only loosely borrows some concepts from Golden Sun (which I hadn't even realized had happened until I was typing up this reply). That was purely done by my subconscious while I was actively focused on something else. if anything, I'm a guy who envies those people who _can_ turn their brains 'off', though I pity the ones who can't turn theirs 'on'.

Anton Schleef

Not all acids eat everything. In fact, that's a very common complaint by chemists regarding a lot of popular media. There are several general 'families' of acids, each of which have certain materials they eat quickly, certain materials they eat slowly, and certain materials that the can't eat. By the way, there are no known materials that can't be eaten by any acids (although only a few can eat away at gold, and there are a few other similar materials), nor are there any known acids that can eat nearly everything (whether slowly or quickly). In fact, a truly high-grade, high-purity glass is actually more resistant to most acids than gold is, and has a longer list of acids that can't eat it at all (which is why most acids are still stored in glass containers for long-term storage today). Thus, your argument fails on multiple fronts, though only in relation to the gold being the only thing left form the digestive process. And that's before we get into the fact that it's extremely unlikely those gold trinkets and coins would be left unmarred by the _other_ forces they have to deal with in the process.

Incoming SPACE HARPOONS!!! Be ready to duck. Just like regular harpoon, but the links are force fields, which shouldn't be possible because shields are ALWAYS convex, wtf?! And you made it into a harpoon chain?! You know we have tractor beams, right?

John Anderson

If I had a dollar for every coworker I’ve had who hoarded information I’d… well, not be rich, but be able to have dinner at a nice restaurant. A very nice one. Also, Dr. Doom and Lex Lothar for evil geniuses.

John Anderson

Dragon scales would be handy if you could figure out how to shape them.

Aaron Mauthe

Sydney just had her “the dark knight rises” moment. “So that’s what that’s like…”

eddi_TBH

Avery slightly warped mirror for a couple of slightly warped heroes.

eddi_TBH

Especially Lex. That's all he's got going for him.

eddi_TBH

In Dragonslayer the hero has a dragon scale shield. Very fireproof. A human scale suit of dragon scale armor would have to made from cut down scales. Or baby dragons. (Yes, I'm a monster)

eddi_TBH

We've been saying that about Sydney for years. So far, so good.

eddi_TBH

Proving Tony was a Madboy.

eddi_TBH

Read "Guns of The South" eh? Just the concept of brass cartridges with a primer and breech loading repeaters were already there. Gatlings were autofire with black powder.

eddi_TBH

"I am created Shiva The Destroyer of Universes."

Ron Jarrell

Seanan McGuire has a series where the male dragons need gold for their reproductive health, and female dragons are cutthroat business women working to earn it to make the babies. K.t. Hanna has her library series where the universal library *is* a dragon, she sacrificed her body to form the library that keeps the universe from being overrun with chaos. She was like the third being to com into existence so got to see a lot of it.

Town Crier

Sooo... Your ADHD is kicking your @ss, is what I got out of this, oh, and a few women can turn their brains off. Weird, but I guess the alien parasites (Wimmen) do adapt over time.

Town Crier

Poor Tink. Guess her thumbs must still suffer.

William Elliott

kinda. Gatlings are crank fired. Meaning you manually have to turn a crank. Theoretically you could use gas or recoil to turn the mechanism BUT the biggest issue is the fouling from blackpowder. There are also issues with the materials [needing harder steels, heat treating, etc]. People have tried running blackpowder in modern semi autos, and even the recoil operated ones foul pretty fast.

doug guenther

Anyone know what it says on the box Frix is carrying?

davebarrack

Oh, you probably wanted to know what it said. "Hamdingers"

eddi_TBH

Your right about Gatling power sources. But now I'm seeing Digit build one with a windmill on top.

doug guenther

Thanks. The entire plot arc is clear now.

Tim Malmström

*recoils in sensible horror* Did... did anybody else's ears vibrate when they read that? Seriously?

Terence Bryant-White

If you don't hear Digit with Waspinator's voice in the third panel, are you geeky enough?
