Thank you for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

I know what we're all thinking. If we could eat metal, we'd all like to try Gallium. For the few of you who weren't thinking that, and wondering why the rest of us were, it's because Gallium's melting point is 85.5°F (29.7°C). So you could keep it in the fridge, probably in the cheese drawer, then pop some in your mouth, and it starts to warm up, then it gets all melty and you could suck on it like a hard candy. Yes, I know Cesium melts at 83.2°F (28.5°C), but Gallium just sounds like it would taste better than Cesium, am I right? Although... I do hope Cesium has its place in the spice rack of metal eating species, because I want Cesium Salads to be a thing.

I thought drinking Mercury would be odd because metals conduct heat really well, so it would feel like a cold drink even if it was heated up quite a bit, but I looked it up, and it's a terrible conductor of heat. So good news, I guess you could make Mercury coffee and it would stay hot, though I suspect very few foods are Mercury soluble. So you'd probably wind up with a bunch of coffee grit floating on top of a mug full of hot Mercury.

So Max does have some odd nutritional requirements, but it's perhaps even odder than 98% of her diet is still just normal human food. Her sense of taste is basically the same as it used to be as well, although it is slightly expanded so the odd elements she craves taste good to her. The fact that she can have an omelet florentine for breakfast, and then shoot out a petajoule of energy before lunch seems like a pretty solid indication that it's not proteins and complex carbohydrates that powers her power. Though maybe it is, and her body is able to fizz regular food. (By fizz, I mean fission, but it doesn't sound right to me to say "her body is able to fission regular food." Like, if you're talking about fusion, you can fuse two things together, but you have to fission them apart? No, there should be a "fuse" equivalent. So, fizz.) Of course, I have no idea how much nuclear energy is in the average omelet, even one with spinach in it, and non-fissile material is, by my understanding, not easy to chain-react, meaning it would be absurdly energy inefficient to extract all of the fission energy from it, so again, the theory is that Maxima's, and indeed probably no Super's power source is regular food.

Fogel

Fun fact: it would technically be safe to drink mercury. The vapours are dangerous, but in liquid form it'll just inertly pass through your

Justaguy

Can we jump-start her morning by splitting a Tasmanian Beer Atom?

James C

... I wonder if Frix can scan Maxima to confirm what her non-standard nutritional requirements are? If it turns out she's been at half-power for years because of a... barium-deficiency or something... then that could be very valuable knowledge.

Whoriar

Ohhh. This begs the question on waste management! Does her digestive system break down the mercury? Otherwise it might cause a lot of problems in the sewage systems

Andrew Denton

Wait- you haven't eaten bismuth?

codesurfer

omg she's already so powerful, imagine if she's like only at the sun starved Superman level

Ray

More importantly, is that Beth?

Michael Obert

Have to reference Sealab on this one: "Ah, Mercury, sweetest of the transition metals."

akrasia

Enquiring minds want to know - does Max fart mercury vapor afterwards? We could have an actual example of Silent but Deadly here!

akrasia

Not as an element, but I commonly ingest bismuth subsalicylate.

Goner

Check your chemistry! I suspect Cesium would explode on contact with warm, salty saliva! Some isotopes are radioactive to boot! Fun Stuff!

Czarzhan

It's not fusion or fission your looking for is "total conversion".

akrasia

I think fissile materials can be fiss'd.

Brad Kirkwood

hmmm, I guess contact with Jabber turns Varia into a catgirl Science is cool but Varia lore is also cool

Greg Morrow

You gain energy by fusing elements lighter than iron (which is carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, i.e. most of the things in food). You gain energy by fizzing elements heavier than iron. So if you're powered by food and using nuclear power to do it, you're fusing.

Mercury is the primary material used in traditional alchemy to create the philosophers stone, aka the thing that turns metals into gold. It acts as the bridge between things i didn't think we've seen any other alchemy like that in the comic but i am now convinced that she craves Mercury because it helps maintain her powers and physical properties. Like maybe it won't boost her powers but i could see it helping her heal and replinish. Like maybe we should eat a bunch of sulfur and salt to like a pre work out, and then Mercury is here post work out.

Phil_M

I could imagine a Super telepath, or a Super intellect like Deus, running perfectly well on conventional food.

Town Crier

So, when Max farts, does it set of the toxic gas alarms? My guess is that she just holds it in all day, then flies up to space and does the sweet release there.

Town Crier

So, instead of gall stones she has philosopher's stones?

Nicholas Fletcher

Could be an annihilation reaction (or some other perfect conversation of matter to energy) taking place in her with either regular food or the metals she eats, that could also help explain the MASSIVE amounts of energy she can output.

Nicholas Fletcher

Also Mercury is only that toxic in bio-available forms. In its metallic form it's safe enough you could even eat it (and Cody of Cody's Lab actually has on the past to prove it). Though it's not completely safe in that form as the small amount of vapors it gives off can react in your mucus membranes to become bio-available, though if you're not handling it regularly or burning it off of either gold (used to be used a lot in mining it) or hats (seriously it's why hatters went mad back in the old days) you're not likely to go as mad as a hatter.

Thisguy

If Max wanted tht kepty secret, she maybe shouldn't have been drinking it in front of teammates. I mean, as far as everyone knows, Max is human, so Harem wouldn't expect anything she consumes to be toxic to humans. Humans are curious, and if we see someone eating someone, we're likely to ask how it tastes... Or sniff it, or take a bite ourselves if we're less respectful.

Stephen Gilberg

And either of them could easily learn what Max drinks.

Stephen Gilberg

If we're going by names alone, "cesium" at least sounds close to "cheese."

Jared

Mercury dissolves or... amalgamates all kinds of things, gold, silver, aluminum... so you have some options for flavoring there. Not iron or platinum though, whence the lore surrounding iron flasks containing demons. Still rules out coffee as such, foods would just float on the top I guess. Or something, certainly wouldn't percolate out caffeine.

Raymond Dannelly

I was wondering where the catgirl had come from unannounced. I failed to recognize the hair.

Anton Schleef

Especially as not even Nuclear Fusion gets you above 10% energy conversion, if I remember correctly. Thus, anything that its above 20% efficiency is going to release massive amounts of energy, much less something that hits 100% efficiency.

Anton Schleef

That would explain her regular low-orbit surveillance flights. And especially why she enjoys them so much.

Anton Schleef

Aside from the tail she looks more fox-like to me, but it's still an interesting expression for her power. I get the feeling that if she touched me she'd turn into a neither pretty nor cute walrus or elephant girl.

Woodrobin

"Coy Furtive Glances at a Rectal Thermometer" NEEDS to be the title of someone's memoir. I don't know who, but they would doubtless be a person whose memoir is worth reading.

Woodrobin

Or since alchemy is also about transcendence, maybe she only gets "stones" when she's brought down by things like stress. Which means she might suffer from . . . Sydney stones.

Paul Gabbard

Ohhh who Dat cat girl sitting next to Math?

Connor Hines

Varia, her Gestalt with Jabberwocky is a catgirl

Hugh Eckert

Sydney is on point in this one.

Reality Spasm

I want to know how much effort went into making that horse look distinctly masculine

Brad Kirkwood

could be fox but the tail didn't look fox to me

Jon Gibson

Cesium would be like pop rocks for maxima. The rest of us would likely need major surgery after the explosion... Assuming we survived it.

Tim Malmström

Frankly I'm a bit more curious/concerned what comes out the other end.

BoingDragon

Is that supposed to be Beth Smith (horse heart surgeon) from Rick and Morty handling that thermometer?

Eric Loken

I'm going to go with 'concerned'.

Eric Loken

Or the name of a grunge rock band.

eddi_TBH

I'm gonna go with total conversion to energy. Otherwise the entire neighborhood sewer system at home is a critical HAZMAT zone. Mercury is currently "No Safe Minimum Dose" category.

eddi_TBH

Hiding the key detail means you have a 50-50 chance. I've seen some very burly mares over the years. And some svelte stallions.

eddi_TBH

Max needed to recharge her batteries. She trusts the team more than the government to keep her secret.

eddi_TBH

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

eddi_TBH

Mercury has been a medical ingredient for a long time. The only bad side effect is killer constipation. It was used for syphilis up nearly the 20th Century. First sulfa drugs then antibiotics replaced that use. BTW it was infused into the urethra. Don't that make your knees lock together?

He Who Must Drink Some Coffee

Just in general it's not a great idea to idly sip someone else's drink if you don't know what it is. I remember when I was very young and foolish, going to visit a couple friends on a hot day and spotting what I thought was a glass of ginger ale, and taking a gulp. It was the gasoline they were using to degrease a minibike engine. Calls to poison control ensued. Needless to say I survived, but for a couple of hours I wished I didn't.

LucasTheLost

Not the telepath. Max has commented in the past that she's immune to telepathy on account of her built in foil "hat".

Travis Watkins

Regular foods would require fusion, as they mostly consist of elements lighter than Iron, and Iron(26) is the center point between fusing light elements and fissioning heavier elements to get power. Fissoning carbon(6), oxygen(8), nitrogen(7), Phosphorus(15), Sulfur(16), Calcium(20), or potassium(19) would take more power than it produces. Iodine(53) could be fissioned for power, but I do not see much else that we eat that would not take fusion.

Teksura

> I have no idea how much nuclear energy is in the average omelet, even one with spinach in it Someone did the math once. The energy in the omelet is equal to the mass multiplied by the speed of light squared. So Max's body is probably able to extract that energy from normal food using some unknown processes using that unknown branch of Physics with the Superion field. Most likely she needs Mercury in this process which is why her body craves it. It would also explain why after a big fight she needs a good swig of Mercury if she's been draining her energy reserves and needs to recharge. It wouldn't surprise me if she was also a bit more hungry than usual.

Teksura

In general it's not a great idea to idly sip someone else's drink even if you DO know what it is. Because that's rude and they might not be happy about it. I imagine you'd be upset with me if I walked up, said hello, and then grabbed your Coffee and took a sip.

Teksura

You're assuming there isn't some weird Superion Field stuff going on. My running theory is Max's body is able to extract raw energy from the foods she eats using some unknown processes that involve the Superion Field, most likely requiring Mercury in some way to make this happen. Which is why she really needs it right now after exerting herself so much. I'm guessing if there was some experiments done weighing her food intake against her waste output, we would probably find a measurable discrepancy that gets more dramatic the more she uses her high energy output powers.
