Thank you for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

We've only seen "transition Maximillia" once before, and at the time, I managed to not turn that flashback into a whole long side-story. I'm sure I could do 40 pages on that period of her life, no problem. But don't worry, this is just another quick flashback.

This page takes place a few weeks after the page 415 flashback. At this point, Max had spent some time staring into a mirror, and decided that the gold stuff under her skin was kind of cool looking, and while all the doctors still didn't have any evidence based theories about what was going on, they had mostly agreed that she wasn't suffering from some sort of fatal heavy metal poisoning, nor were her skin or organs calcifying. On top of all that, after a brief initial fever, Max didn't feel sick, and in fact was starting to feel really healthy. Like, accidentally ripped a door clear off its hinges healthy.

Man, I really need to find some time to go back and post slightly larger versions of the old pages. They're 643px wide, and at some point I did a minor site update that let me post the comics at 750px. It helps with the text if nothing else. Of course if I do that, I'll be tempted to go in and fix little bits of art, like Maxima's oddly manly golem face. Also teen Max's shoulder in that first panel is not the shoulder of a beanpole cross country runner. It would just take a little nudge with the liquefy tool to fix it, but that's a trap. Her tank top in the reflection is all part of the same layer, and I'd have to separate them and fill in the bits left blank from the smaller shoulder, and now instead of a 2 minute fix, it's 10 minutes, and while I'm at it, I think Deus's head is too big and now I'm spending an hour on each page and there's 1400 of them. I could probably resist the urge to fix most stuff due to time constraints, but there are definitely some panels that are just bad. So we'll see about posting enlarged versions of the pages.

Hot damn that face in the last panel, that thermometer must be bussin. I’ll have some of what she’s having.

codesurfer

[Joking] oh Max transitioned? good for her!

Richard du Maine

So, explain what Max was doing to the thermometer? TRYING to break it?

BJ

That was dangerous.

Sir Butcher

More like succesfully breaking it.

Torabi

So... The symbiote spread down her hair, rather than coming in at the roots? That seems like it would have been a big clue as to what was happening, particularly if they were able to cut some of it off and examine it.

Michael Obert

And consuming the sweet mercury inside

Michael Obert

This is also how we learn her mouth is super tough also, so that broke glass (or possibly brittle plastic) likely hasn't cut up her mouth or she'd likely not be making that face in the last panel (lol)

LucasTheLost

There are a variety of less awful ways to commit suicide.

Richard du Maine

But was it intentional? What was her thought process?

Justaguy

And Cue the doctor freaking the hell out about possible mercury poisoning. Just a point of interest: Mercury fever thermometers were largely phased out in the US and Europe between 2001 and 2011 due to toxicity risks, with many states banning them by 2003. The EPA and NIST stopped calibrating them in 2011

Brett Peirce

If we have the same powers/symbiote that she's having, presumably it would not be fatal...

davebarrack

I don't know why, but I suddenly want to drink the mercury inside this -> I really shouldn't bite down on this -> Trying really hard not to bite down on this -> Oops I bit down on this -> Damn, that is a tasty treat!

Town Crier

Fixing/updating the little stuff, that is what interns are for.

Autoskip

…you know, now I’m really curious as to how Maxima’s ears transitioned to being pointy - most of her surface-level metamorphosis seems to just be old skin shedding and giving way to the new, but those points would *not* fit under her old skin…

Stuart Sanders

This bit got my attention quickly - I have a recurring Superhero character whose origin has her drinking heavy metal shakes and such as well. :)

Stephen Gilberg

She may have been miserable enough to try something self-destructive anyway.

Sharien

i had the exact same thought XD

Anton Schleef

The comic goes back to before 2010 and Dave is originally from a state that was probably one of the last to ban them, if memory serves. So, even if this wasn't a part of Max's backstory in the beginning, as Dave is around my age he would've absolutely grown up with those thermometers being the norm, just like I did.

Ray

I note that even though her skin and hair are in mid-transition, her lips are already blood red. This makes me think that her innards are already completed.

Richard Riley

I like to think they got bent when she was in her bi-curious phase, going down on her superpowered girlfriend. ;)

T-Dawg 2099

Probably, especially since she's drinking mercury before full cooked

T-Dawg 2099

The intrusive thought won

Alysandir

She was probably sucking on it, not really understanding why, other than it was satisfying. Which is a lesson for all guys about sexual relations with superheroines with super strength.

Eric Loken

I would think something like that would have to start on the inside and work out, or it would go very badly. Would have had to be fairly quick too, a slow transition of your heart from normal to whatever would probably be fatal before there was enough super heart to take over if it took more than a minute or two. In fact, you would think that for a little period she would have thought she was dying while the transition occurred.

Eric Loken

@Dave Barrack: exactly what I was thinking, more an instinct/ reflex caused by whatever is changing her, she was thinking it was a bad idea, but - as T-Dawg 2099 put it - the intrusive thought won.

eddi_TBH

What a rush. If it wasn't toxic the FDA would make it illegal.

eddi_TBH

I think the filler was plain mercury, so they weren't too dangerous. Chelation therapy would be the proper treatment. Although Max's body chemistry is already past normal if the mercury gave her a sugar rush.

eddi_TBH

"CHEKOV: Give us some more blood, Chekov. The needle won't hurt, Chekov. Take off your shirt, Chekov. Roll over, Chekov. Breathe deeply, Chekov. Blood sample, Chekov. Marrow sample, Chekov. Skin sample, Chekov. If I live long enough, I'm going to run out of samples." ST: The Deadly Years. Max is no doubt in the same "lab rat" problem.

eddi_TBH

Not a fatal dose even for a mundane. Status: 'sick as a dog' possible.

Justaguy

Yeah much less dangerous if swallowed than if inhaled. Still not great. And of course getting an IV into max might be difficult.

Marc Vun Kannon

Or perhaps she already had that forcefield around her body and could somehow sense that something really good was in the tube.

Christopher Smith

I was thinking the same thing, seeing as hair is dead, except right at the root
