Thank you for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

Prophylaxis, in case you don't know (that includes me, I had to google chess terms) just what it's called when you "play defensively," or at least try to deny your opponent whatever strategy he seems to be going for. Like in pool, you want to sink your balls but if possible also leave the cue ball in a bad spot for the other guy in case you miss.

Ryzyl didn't cast Mirror Image, he cast... I don't know. Army of Me or something. Basically one of those high level spells that creates actual copies of him that have the same equipment and spells and stuff that lasts all of 10 minutes, or something like that. And when it ends, he gets the memories of each one back. Good for quickly exploring a dungeon, overwhelming an opponent, pooling all their coin and cheating a merchant out of his bushel of apples, that sort of thing. Actually, if the spell was really well crafted, there'd be an option to not absorb the memories, because most of what he's going to get back from this encounter is a lot of crushing, burning and choppy-choppy.

In panel 2, Max is doing an "X" swipe, followed by a heart stab - hopefully that's more or less what it looks like - but as I'm posting this, I realize that the heart stab is a little superfluous, because she's stabbing right in the middle of the X, which has already been thoroughly quartered. She should have stabbed him right in the middle of the face, probably. Although, during her 3 months of hyperbolic time cargo deck training, she probably got up to the point where she was fighting fairly advanced magic wielding opponents - advanced like "has spell in place that allows them to shrug off a single fatal blow somehow" or "upon receiving a fatal wound, this spell rewinds time to just before the injury was received (up to three seconds) and teleports you up to 10 feet in a safe direction." Which is one of those high level spells that does no good if you get chopped in the femoral artery and it takes you a minute to bleed out. But it's great against decapitations and boulders, whether launched via catapult or giant. So I guess Max is just making sure her kill shots stick. It's the sword equivalent of the double-tap.

In panel 3 it says "seems to incorporates" instead of "seems to incorporate"

Justaguy

I feel compelled to point out that the X-swing is also something you see all the time in anime and comics, and is about as actually practical as Zoro having that sword in his mouth.

The 80s called and they are pleased Mother--In-Law Jokes are in Vogue again

I think live sport must be the final bastion of the phrase "if you're just joining us" and the like. Almost all other media is streamed, or designed for streaming, so the idea that someone has just switched channels in the middle, rather than specifically selected what they want to watch from the start is kind of dead. I suppose if there is something on in a public venue, like a bar, you might have people just watch in the middle of things, or maybe in a family home or something when you sit down to a show someone has already put on. Or if you're like me who just shows up at my sister's house and starts watching whatever my brother-in-law has on... Of course, mid-episode summaries should always be included, as some of us cannot remember exactly what happened 10 minutes ago.

Ebonbolt

GenX would like our "your mom" jokes back; they shouldn't be misused.

Simon Magid

To be fair to Zoro he frequently faces equally practical opponents such as Kaku, Giraffe-Giraffe fruit wielder, who will often attack by such sophisticated means as spinning his rectangular giraffe neck like a helicopter rotor.

Justaguy

Yeah, I was just using it as an example of an "anime thing" that has zero real-world practicality. :)

Nathan Wilson

Live sport, including esports though. I watch a lot of twitch, and there's plenty of game tournaments where that phrase applies

Phil_M

Well, live sport, and I guess live election results coverage. But yeah.

Is Sydney eating alien grapes?

Stephen Gilberg

I see one contender who shouldn't be in a calendar. BTW, it's "eked."

Richard Riley

TBH, it looked like she stabbed him with a grappling hook. Some additional consideration time led me to assume that perhaps she stabbed him and then wiggled ilthe sword around to widen the damage.

Andrew Denton

Sexy, sexy, cheese banter. Edit: Size hours later, I noticed that I'd written 'cheese' instead of 'chess'. 🤦‍♂️

Aclys

I guess we could call it the "X Marks the spot" maneuver? Though yeah honestly it seems like a rather odd move, like.. if the first slash did not cut him in half, the second slash probably wont do it either. And if either of those slashes DID do their job... then the thrust literally is just displacing air. I am totally willing to buy that Max just got carried away trying to pretend to be an expert sword wielder however and its certainly a way to style on a foe "I killed you three times in one move!" Generally speaking, slashing/hacking strikes is for limbs, to disable or at least damage them. Stabs are for center torso/mass to try and impale or at least tickle those ever so important internal organs. If your enemy proves that their limbs don't break or regrow instantly and their internals getting poked just does not bother them all that much? That's where you acknowledge them being well prepared for a swordfight and pull out the plasmatic mass driver.

Ebonbolt

I just noticed: in panel three, is that one of the multi-mook's mooks?

LucasTheLost

I thought it was the commando from Risk of Rain, but down a gun... and all those random accessories.

davebarrack

Huh. It does kind of look like him, doesn't it. I guess I can only draw a few different types of armor unless I make a concerted effort to do something different. But, officially, no, it's not him.

Richard Riley

Also, appropriate speed lines for the sword doing what is described would be closer to an infinity symbol or maybe a lower-case Greek alpha and less like a grapnel anchor, if I'm imagining it correctly.

NickPG

The lady chess commentator looks a lot like Lilith from Cheers/Frasier, since Bebe Neuwirth is extremely hot this is definitely a good thing.

Anton Schleef

I pictured it being said in a quiet, calm tone of voice as if they're trying to avoid disturbing the competitors.

john kraemer

I thought that the battles were supposed to be non-fatal? Seems hard to stab someone through the heart (or bleed them out an artery) non-fatally. Maybe I missed something?

Jonathan Hamilton

Chess commentary only gets spicy when the competitors do. Not sure how many of those videos are faked for clicks or what not, but even so, the amount of disrespect some people show only to get humbled is fun.

Eric Loken

If that thing is eating people, and Max is converting them to fun sized sections, I suspect the death toll for this round has just gone up a great deal.

eddi_TBH

There is not a "no killing" rule. If the fighter doesn't survive until medical help arrives, too bad. On that note, I think that's one of the duplicates.

eddi_TBH

More like a Ben Stein monotone.

eddi_TBH

Just another ex-competitor.

eddi_TBH

Everybody thought you meant Bluce and Gail. Which is just fine.

MD

idk, really don't see the arena arc ending well ...
