Thank you for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

In a comic book, this is one of those pages you register, but basically flip right past. It's transition, but I didn't have time to make the previous page and this one a double, so here we are.

You know, Maxima could claim that she can fly at 1,250 light years a second. (I think I said the UCBA was around 5,000 light years from Earth, but I can't find the comic where I put a number to it.) It wouldn't be... wrong. Depending on how you actually measure her path. From point A to point B is indeed 5,000 light years and she traveled that distance in 4 seconds. But she didn't, because the Aetherium Causeway does bridge 4,999.9999999999999999999999999999 of those light years. It's one of those fun statistics lies. You know, a pregnant woman has a 50% chance of having a boy. She gets pregnant again and has a 50% chance of having a boy, but also a 25% chance of having a second boy. It's all in the wording. Max wouldn't be lying if she said she flew 5,000 light years in 4 seconds. If someone wants to use that information to extrapolate her top speed, that's on them.

Now, the fact that Maxima is wearing a hologram of herself over her bespoke space-latex holo-emitter-embedded catsuit does mean that Cora and crew have a very detailed scan of Maxima in order to project the Max-o-gram. During this scan, Max insisted the holo.hpg image be destroyed after the tournament, not wanting to tempt Cora to disguise herself as Max and, you know, rob a bank or intimidate a corrupt politician or anything of the sort. Of course Cora laughed it off, saying she'd never even consider such a thing. Then Max said, "And naturally you wouldn't be tempted to cosplay as me during a MMFMM fivesome."

And there was the tiniest delay before Cora waved her hand and said, "That... of course... never even crossed my mind."

I'm not sure if Max can narrow her eyes and raise one eyebrow at the same time, that seems like the sort of thing you have to practice a bit so you don't look like you're at the start of some kind of weird facial tic, so instead Max just stared until Cora's hard light elbows started sweating.

Granted, it wasn't a nude scan, since there's no chance Max would need a hologram of that. But it's not like no one has ever holoshopped an .hpg file.

Now assuming access to holodecks is as common as smartphones and also aren't regulated by a buttoned-up Starfleet, let's discuss the ethics of holo-disguising yourself as your friends and acquaintances and then having sex with other friends and acquaintances. Obviously if the other party doesn't know you're disguised, that's bad. If the person you're disguising yourself as doesn't know and hasn't given consent, that's also bad. Maybe a little less bad than the first example, but it's sort of a lateral difference. But if you're at an orgy and the holodeck changes everyone's appearance at random and everyone knows what's up and consent is in abundance, then... well, congratulations, you probably have a bunch of fairly attractive friends. Huh. I guess that was a pretty straightforward ethics discussion. But then, and ethics conundrum that starts with "everyone is on-board and is okay with it" isn't the sort of hypothetical that keeps philosophers arguing into the wee hours at their salons.

But that does lead me to the most unrealistic episode across all of Star Trek. The TNG episode where Westley finds out the girl he's dating is a shapeshifter, and he's all "Ew, no." Now, Star Trek isn't hard Sci-Fi. It's kind of a medium-soft sci-fi, and in its defense, anything set more than a few hundred years in the future kind of can't be super hard sci-fi, because we just don't know where the possibilities of science and technology can really take us. If anything, something set 1,000 years in the future with technology that more or less resembles what we have today is probably less realistic.

But a teenage boy finding out that his girlfriend is a shapeshifter and getting squicked out by it is FUCKING FANTASY. It'd be more like, "Can you turn into Starfire from Teen Titans? Can you turn into Ariel in both her mermaid and landmaid forms? Can you turn into Counselor Troi? Can you turn into..." etc.

Of course, those floodgates probably only opens up after the shapeshifter gets past the conversation that goes, "I appreciate the "you're all I want," sentiment, but honestly, it's okay to ask me to turn into other girls from our class. Or the volleyball coach. Or that one singer we both like.""Really?""Sure. In fact, as a shapeshifter, it would actually be racist of you to not ask me to turn into other girls while we make out."

Oy gevalt don’t tell me we’re gonna get a quick couple page splash just so she can come back to the tournament before the times up, really thought we were moving on.

Jacob Bissey

Wouldn't they have data that is effectively a scan of her nude body from putting the holosuit on her? Like, that would have had to have taken very precise measurements and learned of her precise textures and how her body moves to be able to print the correct polymers to fit her right and allow her to move right. That doesn't seem functionally different from the data that would be present in a scan of her body to make a hologram, all that would be missing is the colors and the way her hair moves when unrestricted, and those are easily accessible data points from publicly available videos, especially the ones from when she was recorded blasting the Fel carrier ship by those space cops. The only information missing would be the colors of her nips and nethers, and those can either be extrapolated with reasonable accuracy, or are the sort of thing someone looking for sexual roleplay wouldn't mind not being sure of the accuracy because they don't expect to ever find out the true answer or don't care about the true answer.

Rob Wright

In statistics it would still be a 50% chance of a second boy as it will be either a 2nd boy or 1st girl.

Simon Magid

To be fair to Wesley, he was in nearly all ways written as horrible and he did not really deserve to be sent away with an omnipotent pedophile.

William Elliott

Theres also that painting done for whatsisname, the Gold Dragon dude...

Michael Obert

Can the Modern Superwoman have it all - solve crises on Earth while trying to maintain her streak of victories in the intergalactic coliseum? Tune in to find out!

Chimera80

I'm so confused right now... Are we-the-readers supposed to know what she's reacting to, and I've just missed it? Or are we waiting on the reveal

Czarzhan

Wesley wasn't so much squicked out as he felt lied to, which is pretty badly written in itself. "How dare you not contantly shift to let everyone know you can! Just like I walk around with my dick out urinating constantly to let people know I can pee standing up."

Fogel

We will probably find out soon. There has been no reveal yet

He Who Must Drink Some Coffee

Unless I'm misremembering my statistics class, there's a difference between the odds of an individual event versus cumulative outcomes. Every time I flip a coin, the odds of getting heads is 50%. But the odds of heads coming up 10 times in a row is only 5%. So what you say is true, but it's also true to look at the possibility of two 50% chances coming out the same and say that's only a 25% chance.

Niburu

Funny enough I just watched that episode of TNG a week ago! Wesley actually rejects her out of fear after the shapeshifter's guardian tries to scare him with a monstrous form and she changes to an equally monstrous form to posture back. They're next conversation he is bitter and probably still a bit traumatized from it so he lashes out at her. It also helps knowing that she has fully said she cannot be with him because she is destined to rule her people. At the end of the episode though he meets her in the transporter and apologies for his ignorance, then asks if he can see the real her. She transforms into light before being transported away and he is just as enthralled by her beauty there. I'd like to think after he became a traveller he went back to see her at least once. In all honesty, Wesley is written a lot better than I remember in my previous watch throughs. The biggest problem is the first couple of seasons, where the writing had to establish he was a prodigy while having the crew react like he's a child. It tainted his character for the masses watching and made him less popular than he could have been otherwise.

I'm a math professor....the odds of heads coming up ten times in a row (if we assume the two events heads/tails are equally likely) is (1/2)^10, which is quite small....

Teksura

Couple things. Your coin math is wrong. The odds of 10 heads in a row is 0.0977%. While each given flip is a 50% outcome individually, only 1 in 1024 (1024 being 2^10) potential outcomes of 10 flips together results in 10 heads. I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that if you start with 100, and then cut it in half 10 times, you'd end up with 5. The "25% chance of having a second boy" is the odds of a woman having two boys as her two children, as calculated before she even has the first boy. But after she's had the first boy, the math changes to "50% odds of the second also being a boy" because the first coin has already flipped. It would be like me telling you that I already flipped heads on a coin, now what are the odds that you flip a coin one time and get Heads?

Sharien

zoooooooooomieeeeeeeeeeees some problem is going to need and get a very maximum force minimum conversation solution^^

Stephen Gilberg

To me, it depends on the shapeshifter's default form. White Martians in the DC Universe look hideous when they're not trying to appeal to human(oid)s.

Ebonbolt

But it's a 25% chance (overall, from before the first) to have two boys.

Czarzhan

By the way, a quick calculation shows that you should have used about half as many 9s after the decimal to get into the meter-range of scale. With what you have, she would have moved only about 9 picometers on her own.

James C

There is, but the probabilities reset when an event has occurred. There's a 25% chance that if a woman who hasn't had children has 2 children then the second child will be a second son. But if the woman has already had a son as her first child, it's a 50% chance that her second child will be a second son (because you've already "passed the fork" for scenarios where the first child was a daughter)

Hugh Eckert

This is, of course, leaving out whether or not the couple engendering the child are genetically more disposed to having children of one biological sex or another...

JasonAW3

Uhm, it looks like someone is in for a MAJOR butt whoopin'...

Otoger

well if you only count the distance from one end of the portal to the other it should be about right XD

SilverScrolls

I've always wondered if there's a holodeck sex trade of fictional characters and deceased celebrities. I mean they've gotta still have pop culture and such so if you get something like the MLP fandom in star trek are tbeir holodeck dating sims made for it or just any massively popular show of fictional characters. Or if it's not how does getting jiggy with a character played by a living actor stack up with ethics and consent and all. What about pulling up date night with say Marilyn Monroe or Hulk Hogan

Eric Loken

Quarys are very rarely filled in, so it was a safe bet. As for future tech being hard to imagine, you don't even need to go hundreds of years into the future. Sci-fi writers didn't see the microchip coming, so Asimov, Heinlein, et al has computers based on transistors that take up rooms, rather than a bunch of them in a decent sized closet (and half of that is for cooling). Meanwhile cyberpunk in the 1980s and 1990s didn't see the smartphone coming, so in the high tech near future with cybernetics and neural connections to the internet, there are still pay phones and people's cell phones are *just* phones.

Eric Loken

Wheaton has commented on the writing of Wesley being almost intended to make everyone hate the character. I'm not sure if it was actually intentional, but if it wasn't the writers were not thinking *at all* when they wrote him. Of course with the absolute Charlie Foxtrot that was the making of the first two seasons - as an example, in the first season they went through more writers for episodes than they made episodes - it's not much of a surprise if the writing was sub-optimal.

Simon Magid

@Eric Loken: Agree on all points. Especially the writing was very unpredictable. It is hard to believe that 'Measure of a Man' and 'The Royale' were even the same show.

eddi_TBH

They can flood though. A shot of Max rocketing out and then leaving a shock wave wave would be dramatic. Unfortunately, the water would have backwashed through Sydney's portal. Causing Sydney level havoc in the vicinity.

eddi_TBH

That is not her happy face.

eddi_TBH

So far we just know there's an emergency.

Eric Loken

This is true, in fact I think they often do, so... yeah, that would have been messy.
