Thank you so much for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

There's no reason the broadcast of the UCBA couldn't do dramatic finales in multiple angles and in slow-mo. They have a zillion micro-drones all over the battlefield. The live feed might be limited in the slow-mo stuff only because something else dramatic could happen immediately after the first dramatic thing. But the feed probably has a dozen PiP options, plus you can customize your feed to follow a certain contender, since there's at least 4 different fights going on at the start of each match. The feed that Sydney and co. are watching (and us) is the "official" feed with curated camera angles and is what the Gail and Bluce are working from.

Besides, anime used to be replete with the 1, 2, 3, SLASH trope. I'm thinking specifically of the ending of Wicked City where the ninja girl gets preggers powers, because of course she does. But that's hardly the only example. I don't know if it's that much of an anime trope these days though. My anime intake lately is much lower than it used to be, mostly because I got my start with it in college... Well, probably Harmony Gold Robotech was my first real bit of exposure to it beyond Voltron/Ultraman/Speed Racer, but anyway, I think I kind of reached my saturation level a while back.

I think the two shows that finally really bored me away from the genre was me trying to watch Bleach, and I think toward the end of the first season, the "Hah hah, I have defeated you!" / Hero flexes his antagonist gland extra hard and finds a hitherto unknown source of power then one-shots the boss, who then goes, "What!? That's impossible! Noooooo! >dead<" And it was like anime plot paint by numbers. I was like, "Oh my god, I have already seen this exact same thing 87 times!"

The other one was me trying to watch Naruto. I enjoyed the humor, I vaguely recall being amused by the pink-haired girl being closet-boy-crazy? Am I remembering that right? But the fights. God damn, every fight was like, "I'm going to throw a punch now, but first, let's do a 20 minute flashback to show how I learned this punch." Like the whole first season, they only got through about 4 fights, because every fight took 4 episodes? I'm being hyperbolic, but again, I decided I didn't have the patience for it at the time. The only reason I was watching it in the first place was because for about three consecutive A-Kons, like half the cosplayers there were dressed as Naruto characters, and I was keenly aware my Anime literacy was falling way behind. So I gave it a shot, but unfortunately I was all Shonened out.

I've hardly sworn off anime, but I have less time to watch it these days, and I can really only watch dubbed stuff because I can't draw and read subtitles at the same time. In the last few years, all I've watched is Delicious in Dungeon, Saiki K, a few years back, which was fairly amusing. Komi Can't Communicate... Oh, I watched the first two seasons of My Hero Academia, which I recall liking mostly. Does Aggretsuko count?

I really need to watch Frieren. The only thing I know about that show is from the pictures I've seen Frieren online, and they mostly involve her... >cough< interacting with Mimics.

My favorite thing I've watched recently was My Dress Up Darling, which has a fantastic dub, IMO. Though I wish the main character would get therapy instead of spiraling into depression for 3 and a half minutes every episode because ten years ago a girl told him he was dumb for liking dolls. It's just a little embarrassing to try and show an anime to someone who isn't already saturated in the culture and having to sheepishly explain that the Japanese don't know how to write... emotions? Or at least western-style emotions? Is that a thing? But the rest of the show is amusing, I promise!

Look, it's... when an anime character is sad, and not just "comical spray of tears" sad, you all know the exact sequence that's going to happen. Head down, tears running down cheeks, and a lot of murmuring/whispering. Then they pop to their feet and scream until they wind down with the trail-off scream. I don't know, maybe that's how Japanese people act? I hope it's just a wildly overused trope of Japanese media, cause it doesn't seem healthy, and it's not how any human I've ever met acts. So I get self-conscious when I show someone a thing I like and there's this weird recurring bit in it, and I reflexively feel the need to apologize for? Anyone else get like that?

ANYWAY.

Green Strider gets the triple angle deathblow, which is fair, since he blowed up a spaceship with a single sword strike.

Congratulations to Maxima and Green Strider for a combined first kill. The other contestants were also there tickling the target

I'm reminded of a quote from Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw: "I watched an anime once. Dude pulled a gun at the start of the episode, fired it at the end, and everything in between was angst. I wouldn't mind, but he missed! "

Magraal

I'll slightly spoil you that Gojo does *mostly* get over the trauma angst pretty quickly and after that it turns into a shockingly realistic story about teenagers connecting over a shared hobby. I say shocking because the background characters don't pull the usual stereotypes and actually react like ordinary people, which makes the show so much more enjoyable.

I couldn't get past the way the women were written in Naruto... they were supposed to be just as deadly as the guys, but almost never did more than scream/cry, despite being trained the exact same way.

Greg

Honestly, if Green didn't have a Kamen Rider Ass Finisher, Id be wondering what discount bin he came out of. Great page!

Czarzhan

The first place I encountered the "sad/build up to a scream" trope where it worked (for me at least) was in live-action. Superman: The Movie, to be exact, where he pulls Lois's body from the crushed car.

astralFitz

I have entirely too many potential recommendations, so I'll stick with something short and fun: May I Ask For One Final Thing I would further specifically recommend the dub (in english at least, I can't speak for other languages); the VAs, especially for the protagonist, knew exactly what to do and they did it fantastically. I highly expect a grin that will hurt your cheeks throughout xD

He Who Must Drink Some Coffee

Panel 2 had me saying, "Haha! Speed, you must win this fight!! Haha!!" "Yes, father! Haha!!" "Haha!" "Haha!!!"

Sharien

ooooooh someone to give maxima a run for her money - especially with her newly aquired sword forms!^^

davebarrack

I've watched the 2 seasons on Netflix. I just thought that part of the "character growth" was ham fisted.

strfan

Well, it seems the sentients have something against being wiped out :P Sinistar is now out of the way, it must be pissed :P

He Who Must Drink Some Coffee

It really bothered me in hindsight how Supes could rewind time to save Lois, but unaccountably never did it to save Joe Doaks from being hit by a bus, or little Susie Wannamaker from drowning in the river, etc. Man, I hated even the *idea* of Superman for a long time after that.

I'm pretty solid in the same camp. Back in college I was pretty willing to watch whatever I could get my hands on. But the shows with 100 episodes to cover 5 minutes of actual plot got real old real fast. And I just don't have the time to invest any more.

MAKE MY MONSTER GROW!

tsukiouji

Yeesssss that manga is so great Wait it got an anime? Neat

Madeleine

Somehow that person looks like their hair was cut with the same technique.

Yeah a thing you always have to keep in mind is the vastly different cultures, it’s like learning Basic and looking at something in Python. That’s why so often one of the most important things for a show is the localization, but even then something’s just don’t translate well based on how people are raised and the culture around them.

Richard Riley

I'm still looking for more anime as good as Sword Art Online. If you liked My Dress Up Darling and want better emotional maturity, you might also appreciate A Sign of Affection.

Re: Anime - I've had two or three times I've been interested in anime, I watch for a while and then get bored by the insane repetitiveness - not just in the same series, but between multiple series. I say that every time they make a new manga or anime they are handed a list of anime tropes, and told that they must include at least 75% of the tropes in the series or else. And at least 5 - at LEAST - must be included in every episode. I too exagerate, but you get the idea. It really does make me wonder how the genre became so popular when it is so often just the same thing recycled over and over. Mind you I wonder that about most modern comic books, they too follow the same tropes over and over, and more akin to soap operas than heroes fighting to protect the regular people from evil. "Spider-man! Doc Ock is attacking the Empire State Building!" "But Aunt May is pregnant with Satan's child! And M.J. is leaving me for the Green Goblin! And I just woke up from a three year coma and it turned out everything I had thought happened was a dream!" "... You know what, never mind, SWAT just shot Doc Ock in the head. Of course he'll be a clone, or from another universe, or an alternate timeline, or some other shit. Gods, I wish was in an alternate universe."

OK Stride will get the credit for the kill. Plus a bonus for Flashy Bladework. But Ixha should get a mention for the set up.

eddi_TBH

So she knows not to pull the sword on him. Blasting the floor out from under him would be a good start.

eddi_TBH

Odd things happen during practice rounds.

Comics use a cycle method to keep the readers flowing in. Usually boys 8 to 16/17 are the target. With regular resets of the main characters to attract new eyes. Those of us who continue a love of comics and got bored when the reruns were touted as all new too often. Marvel and DC get left by the wayside and publishers like Dark Horse (the local guys to me) get the bounce back business.

Sharien

awwwww but she could pull a dabbler and then dabbler could later be all "hey remember when i got bogged down with one opponent, because i wanted to win a swordfight?" XD
