And just when some of you started coming around on Deus. Of course, some of you might like him more now as well.

BTW the conversation in the post beneath the previous comic was totally canon.

I started off this post with some thoughts on the death penalty in general, but there's just no way to talk about that without it turning into a political shitstorm. I'll just say that while I think some crimes completely deserve it, I'm personally against it because the legal system in the US is incredibly, incredibly flawed. People* are lazy, biased and racist, and our legal system does very little to mitigate that. The number of convictions being overturned due to DNA evidence that they didn't have the tech to test for a few decades ago is really embarrassing, and should tell you that we haven't figured this shit out yet. I mean, honestly, if I had to give aliens a tour of the US and they started asking questions about our legal system, I would be really embarrassed to describe the current state of it.

As far as the legal system in Galytn goes, citizens are in pretty good shape. The entire legal system is free, because as soon as it's not free, IMO, it stops being about justice and becomes hugely dependent on who has more money. There's no death penalty for Galytn citizens except for extreme circumstances, like serial killers and war criminals and the like, but at the moment, if you're caught doing some big no-no's and you're not a citizen, like, if you're a mercenary hired by a foreign power to blow up hospitals or something, welllllll... Then you get to see Vale, and she's been armed with long winded speeches about why you've been a naughty boy.

*"Some to most," depending on how cynical** you are. **And/or realistic.

I recommended "The Vixen War Bride" a few weeks back, and the fourqual is out. The, uh... 4th book. Repatriation. I follow the author on Amazon, but Amazon has yet to fire off an email informing me of the fact, even though it's been out for several weeks now. But it's been a long time since Amazon was thirsty, so it's not really reasonable to expect them to care about being good at what they do. But I digress. Anyway, the book is good, go get it.

While I can agree with the results of benevolent dictatorship and Deus's Ideals for one, I Recognize the flaws in assuming that you are or would run one, and his own nature that makes me cautious about him running one. However those last people Vale noticed have a speech? I'm with her on the reaction of 'Oh hell no.'

I’m liking Vale more and more. A better evil leader than Deus.

Every villainous crew needs a strong, silent type. Efficiency is just a plus

“Vixen War Bride” - the title made me quite hesitant to pick it up originally, because it sounded horribly problematic. But it was actually a pretty good series dealing with cultural incompatibilities turned up to eleven. Not sure the “war bride” title is actually accurate, as the term seems to refer to women who marry for (quite understandable!) personal benefit rather for essentially political reasons.

I appreciate Deus' attempt to get Vale to channel Chidi! I assume that Deus's superintelligent master plan includes succession; if he has a master plan and it's not simply sociopathy, post-dictatorship is the bigger problem than reworking society. (Although Great Leap Forward and Five Year Plans show that reworking society is a difficult problem, too.)

I'm with you when it comes to the Death Penalty, I don't really trust our legal system to get things right in any case where guilt is in even the slightest question, so even certain crimes where I do believe the Death Penalty is called for, I am against it in the even the person is not actually guilty. Death is permanent, you can't find out later that you were wrong and take it back. Additionally, I am very much against any form of lecturing or torture before an execution. There is no point, just kill them and be done.

If monologuing is seen as a punishment, perhaps the alt-title of the page could have been 'Crime and Punishment'? >.>

Mercenary murderus rapist from outside, sorry if i do not give much of a dam if they get taken care of permanetly. And as they come from outside of the laws that govern the place, One can perhaps say it is one way to send a deterrance message over the border. Because one can atleast hope mercs are not that stupid. Some people think they can do anything and not get caught ofcourse. Is why death penalty is not really a deterrant much in law, as people may be more afraid to leave witnesses alive, and such logic loops instead of not doing the crime.

I think probably the speach is for their own people, not the captured people, then again we do not know if ALL of them are going to be gotten rid of. OR if this is being taped/recorded/live for distrubiution of the message.
