I can't believe it's taken us until episode 89 to get to a Nightwish album. I REALLY enjoyed this listen and this episode. With Imaginaerum, Nightwish is exploring the human condition with a concept album. The focus is on an old and dying composer who looks back on his life... questioning his choices, reliving his ups and downs, and trying to figure out what it all means. This type of subject is exciting to me, and the music is wonderful! I hope you enjoy!

Over 2h long? :o Again, really awesome take on this. I know the music of the album in and out, but there are some of the songs that I never really thought about. Thanks for your take on *all* of the songs, it really made me think about some of them for the first time. I also never noticed before that the word "river" is in there so many times. :) Regarding that "foreign" language. I'm not quite sure about it, but I think it's a celtic language, as Rheged was a celtic kingdom. I also had to think about that one phrase you stumbled over: "Do I love you or the thought of you" I imagine that it could refer to the fact that sometimes we don't "really" love, but rather we think we need to, in the sense of "wouldn't it be great, if …?" questions. I think you can also apply that to many creative processes. e.g. in music you might have an idea that it would be cool to maybe do something like this or that, but when you actually implement it, you notice that it was rather the thought of doing that what you loved than the implementation. Thanks again for the EPL. I love that album and I love this EPL. :)

With reference to your question about the transition from Tarja to Annette, I have a few thoughts. First, I saw them on Tarja’s last tour and Annette’s first, and was a bit disappointed with Annette singing some of the older songs. For example, Sleeping Sun was a poor choice because she just didn’t have the voice for it. I have not seen them with Floor, but in videos she does a great job with the songs first recorded by Tarja. My second thought is that the albums with Annette are much more cohesive as Tuomas’ writing became more sophisticated and he moved into concept albums. The music in those two albums is more suited to her voice and allows her to shine. I probably prefer the older albums, in part because I have heard them so many times; however, they are not as consistent as later works and you may find some songs you are less fond of when they get the EPL treatment.

Your reaction to Song of Myself is a true treasure, imo. We could see the power and impact of the spoken word section all over your face. I looked it up afterwards, and although the poem was inspired by Whitman, it was written entirely by Tuomas. The line that hit hardest for me personally was "Oh, how rotten your pre-apocalypse is". The exact brand of religion that I was raised in was constantly looking towards the rapture/end-times/etc, to the point where I considered not going to college as I was -so sure- that The End would come in the next decade or so (around Y2K). Keep on giving us your real and honest reactions. Glad you loved this one, and hope next time we can do Endless Forms :)

All of their studio albums are worth many listens imho, even Angels Fall First--their first which was, essentially, a demo. Between the changing vocal lineups, the musical evolution, and the thematic shifts, it's a fascinating metamorphosis.

Just watched this reaction and loved it. Parts remind me of The Moody Blues. I will definitely be checking out more from this band. That's part of the reason why I love being here and broadening my musical tastes👌🙂
