Doug - I saw this when you first released it, it must not have been blocked right away. You wondered if they can actually play this fast live. The answer is, yes. Incidentally, there is a youtube video of Herman Li, their lead guitarist, reviewing a video of a teen girl named Tina S playing along to this song, and she absolutely nails it start to finish. (And looks nearly bored doing it AND was chewing gum the whole time as well!) To say he was blown away is an understatement, he was flat out astonished - he issued an offer for her to join them onstage if she ever wants to at one of their shows. (Tina S is something of a mystery, but that's another discussion.) Not that I expect you to ever check it out... but I found it fascinating.

It’s unfortunate that you watched the music video, as it’s an abridged version of the song. It cuts out whole sections that add a bit more variety. But yeah, that’s pretty much DragonForce in a nutshell regardless.

Still available in Scotland, a VPN might be needed for everyone in the States and Canada if they want to watch it on YouTube.

For me, there's always the question: Is it musical? The speed and precision are impressive, to be sure, but melodically, it doesn't float my boat.

Adie

OK, so I'm not a metal fan particularly. However, I did get the adrenalin thrill of this piece, which is vitally linked to the speed. I didn't expect any harmonic or melodic interest, but then, when I go to the gym or watch sport I don't expect any expressive dance moves. I buy in to the idea that they played this fast. My experience is that it is difficult to speed up (or slow down) a recording by much more than 10% without losing essential elements of the performance, and all the elements of performance seemed very much in place here. Besides that, it seems to me that much of the point of the music here is in the energy that comes from the speed - so there would be little point in playing it slower for the recording and speeding up as it would lack critical feel. I may not play it again, but it had an impact, and I will remember it.

very cool! this was one of the first "mainstream" songs which got me interested in complex music! I was listening to this in high school, and found the much better Yes and Van der Graaf Generator in college 😆

I have seen them live some years back. They can play that fast live. They do have a few slow songs, but most of them are similar to this one.

Luciano Paciornick

The full song is much better, but it wouldn't be different enough for you to have a different opinion on it, I don't think, Doug. Seeing them play it live *might* be an interesting experience, but Dragonforce is Power Metal in its simplest and most straightforward form... not a lot of room for nuance with what they do. :D
