In this edition of the Extended Play Lounge, I'm making a Doug's Choice. And, I've chosen to listen to American Beauty by the Grateful Dead. I very much enjoyed this album. All of the songs were new to me except Truckin' (which I barely knew anyway). So, grab your favorite adult beverage (or other substance) and chill with me while we listen to this 'beauty' of an album.

This will be the album that will define the Grateful Dead in 100 years. The band went from crazy LSD-fueled jams to structured harmonies with clever lyrics by Robert Hunter. This album is Americana at its finest. Sugar Magnolia is still ringing in my head from Sunday's show in Golden Gate Park.

Looking forward to this very much ❤️

Thanks so much for choosing this album. Maybe Episode 100 can be the entire Cornell '77 show. Willys = WW2 era Jeep

All that's left is Cornell 77! (and everything else😄)

I have heard “Brokedown Palace” SO MANY TIMES in my life, but I had NEVER EVER EVER made the connection between the lullaby line and the “mama mama” lyric. You said “mama’s lullabies” before the song started, and then it hit me when I heard the line… the lullaby sung long ago was sung by mama! I immediately remembered my mother singing me to sleep singing “Michael row the boat ashore, Alleluia” and I almost cried. So beautiful.

As an 80's metal head teenager, you would knock me over with a feather if you told me that during my 20th birthday my girlfriend at the time would get me into the Grateful Dead but that's what happened. I saw my first show in July of 1990 in Foxboro, MA and I was hooked. I went to 14 shows before Jerry died and have seen a few more of Dead and Co but there's nothing quite like a Dead show. I liken it to a huge block party and they're the hired band jamming away keeping the vibes good while we party goers dance or just chill the night away. One of my favorite memories was seeing them in (then Giants Stadium, now MetLife) in NJ and they finished with an Acapella gospel tune And We Bid You Goodnight and the entire crowd of over 55000 people sang along. I get chills thinking about it. I haven't listened to GD for a spell and it was definitely a great hang hearing American Beauty again. The mortality songs definitely hit closer to home now that I'm in my mid 50's and still mourning Ozzy's death. But, it's not scary at all the way Robert Hunter tells it. Thanks Doug.

Great show. You asked is it Rock n Roll, Country, folk? It's the Grateful Dead, a musical genre all their own.

I grew up in San Francisco, just a few blocks from Golden Gate Park, and saw the Dead play there three or four times, late sixties, early seventies. I was never a dyed-in-the-wool deadhead, but learned to appreciate them over time. Good LP choice, though!

I first listened to this album & Live/Dead as i kid in the early 70s then went to my 1st Dead show in '79 and have been on the bus ever since. There was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert! Even during a not spectacular show there was magic. I miss those days.

Willys is a Jeep 4x4 vehicle.

Wow, you are right. Ripple is a lot like Any Dream Will Do from Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
