So glad you enjoyed the ELP selection (I'm BeeCee8). There were some pleasant surprises here that I wasn't familiar with, like Bruford/Towner/Gomez, Muse, and The Spelunkers. This is great education!

Great episode, Doug! If anyone is interested in Doug's reaction to U.K.'s debut album, it's Extended Play Lounge #62 here on Patreon. (Not #52, which was a typo in my writeup.)

Bill Bruford’s jazz compositions during his second Earthworks era and later are sublime. And his drumming is so tasteful and fits perfectly. Just like his other styles of drumming for KC and others so well. And Then There Were Three… is also a great drum album. Phil was a beast, even if it gets kind of buried in the mix.

Thanks Doug for this wonderful Trio analysis. It cost me some money as I had to buy some stuff as physical medium. If you really want to do Jazz Trios in the future I highly recommend Tingvall Trio. The song Vägen for example is some of the best modern jazz trio work I have ever heard.

I would love to see a reaction to the 9 songs that didn’t make it in the Discord vote. If we do a completely new trios FF, they will iikely come out at the bottom again if they even make it to the Patreon vote.

Relative to the tension between record companies and artists in the Genesis song. It was written as punk music was on the ascent. Punk was in part a reaction to the perceived excessive complexity of prog. But just to prove that there really isn’t anything new, all you need to do is look at the lyrics of Chuck Berry’s Rock and Roll Music written in 1957 and covered by the Beatles, which include the verse “I've got no kick against modern jazz Unless they try to play it too darn fast And lose the beauty of the melody Until it sounds just like a symphony”.
