Well...the music that I heard on this album was most unexpected! It was almost bucolic at times! I was thoroughly entertained by this first listen to Islands from King Crimson. It's songs are deep and subtle and full of dynamic range and contrast. I hope you enjoy!

KING CRIMSON: Islands | Extended Play Lounge Ep. 115

I love this album as much as I do with any other KC album. The title track comprises one of the most beautiful melodies RF has ever written. Formentera Lady to Sailors Tale is second to none. The other tracks are excellent, too.

I don't know what's wrong with people. Islands is great and is the equal of any of the others. More soulfull, more atmospheric than the others, I love it.

I’ve been waiting a long time for this. I haven’t listened to the video yet. I would have told you this in advance: the other albums won’t prepare you for this one, and no single track will prepare you for the others.

Goug, listen beyond the final track, there's a bit of extra content which is interesting, Fripp speaks!

this comment is not relevant to this album (i need to get back on the discord, apologies).... we need some aphrodite's child doug. greek band that vangelis was apart of. 6 6 6 is wild

"What if Jimi Hendrix was in The Beatles" and did a violently cynical song about groupies as sex-toys instead of people? Still gives me the creeps all these years later...

My favorite Crimson album, and by a wide margin. "Starless" still my favorite track, but this album... it's just so perfect. Ironically, I've never taken to "Ladies Of The Road", yet it's the most Crimso song on the album! Took me a while to watch this video, I had to keep stopping to compose myself between songs. Part of my soul.

I love the live performance of this on/off crimso incarnation. It's the most jazzy of all of them.

Rodney Griffin

It might just be me, but I look at the first four KC albums as the four major elements. ITCOTCK- Fire ITWOP- Water Lizard- Air Islands- Earth Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe I'm amazed.😄 ♥️

Jim Reeves

FWIW This version was released with a different cover than the original designed by Pete Sinfield.

Song Of The Gulls is absolutely beautiful! ❤️

Regarding the ending of "Letters": maybe she heads to a nunnery?

...and bassist Boz Burrell was a founding member of Bad Company

So much running through my head and heart. I love this album so much. I’m glad you enjoyed it Doug. Notes: Keith Tippett featured on Lizard, and on Cat Food on Poseidon. For fun, check out an album called Septober Energy by Centipede, a massive collection of prog and Canterbury musicians. Robin Miller was also featured on the Lizard Suite. He was first chair oboe in the BBC symphony under Boulez, and in the Scottish chamber orchestra. (I’ve always thought of Islands as Fripp’s chamber music album) Fripp, beginning his detachment, put Mel in charge of finding a bassist. They briefly hired Rick Kemp, who quickly backed out, and became the long time bassist for the folk-rock group Steeleye Span. Boz was already on board as vocalist, and Robert decided Boz had enough innate musicality to learn the bass. In years to come, after a long career with Bad Company, Boz never had any interest in talking about the KC experience. This band parted on bad terms, but Fripp eventually reconciled with Mel and Iain.

Wow! "Islands" is an album that has totally passed me by. I only occasionally sailed past the shores of early KC, coming to them via "Discipline". That's an amazing collection of "songs", in reality some of the best modern music you could care to hear. Thanks for the analysis Doug, it's always a joy, but especially when we're both virtual novices to an album. The more I hear, the more I elevate Crimson and VDGG to the pinnacle of Prog. Excellent. And good luck with the move and all that.

I saw KC in London when they released Discipline. They opened with Red and screwed it up and had to start again. I guess a bit under rehearsed

I started getting into King Crimson in my late teens in the mid 90s. I remember hearing this once and nothing resonated with me. I think I was bored by it. I was looking for a lot more bombastic stuff that I certainly found in other albums. Around 2014 when they reformed and started playing stuff from their entire catalogue, they initially played The Letters and Sailor's Tale from this album and on later tours, Islands. Seeing those tracks made me revisit this album and what a difference. I really love this album. Definitely different than anything else in their catalogue, but it is great nonetheless. Song of the Gulls and Islands are so beautiful and can bring me to tears. I'm so glad that I decided to give this album another listen when I got older, and I'm fortunate that I got to see them play Islands three times.

Robert Fripp has said that Lizard and Islands are both mistakes, but they were "necessary mistakes," in order for King Crimson to arrive at a place more suited to its aims. As elements of the Crimso oeuvre, they both contain many unexpected treasures, and I love them each for the strange little orphans that they are. As always, thanks, Doug, for making me use lots of commas and for your insights and the fun. That's a wicked looking pipe you're sporting these days!

This is an example to me of how the wisdom of the community is great than mine. I was insistent that Islands was an optional extra to the KC catalogue, but listening again I find that this is a wonderful album that stands well against the rest.

Quite late to the party but anyway I'm quite sad you're running out of KC material , the 70's albums are the best alongside their live material which is filled with improvisations and variations on their songs. It would be worthy to check out Robert Fripp's solo material and collaborations ("Exposure" is a great place to go next and "The First Day" as well considering the presence of David Sylvian). Their 90's Projekcts are really cool as well but maybe a bit hard to find for free. Islands is a beautiful album , I love this side of the band because its not exclusively hard-edged and technical but also romantic , gentle and lyrical with some humor in it. It all feels so lively and unpredictable that's the reason why I've always loved this band so much. I put Lizard and Islands on a category of their own for being highly creative and comprehensive albums of a time in music history that will never come back. Thanks for this one Doug , your reactions are all very precious ;)

From time to time I return to this album. The only song that lyrically hasn't aged well is the over masculin Ladies of the Road. But I enjoy the music :) Btw, the 2014+ concerts of King Crimson often began with the tape of the 'hidden track'.
