OK! We're back to normal with our 2-round poll structure for the extended play lounge episodes. (I had picked Dream Theater and King Crimson specifically in December.)

For those that are new...the first round asks you to pick from 1 of 5 bands. These bands, as we start out 2022, reflect the bands I'm personally most interested in reviewing at the album level. And, I've factored in some of the community's recommendations and suggestions in building this list.

Once we have a winner in round 1, we'll then vote on which of the winning band's albums/epics will be included in this episode. All five of these artists haven't yet been featured on the EPL, so I'm excited as to where this round of voting leads.

Round 1 will be active until 1/10/22. Happy Voting!

Of course Tool - 10000 Days

Trent Curtis

Frank Zappa — because I don’t know enough about him myself, so I would be interested in learning more along with you and everyone else.

Andreas C Georgi

Zappa - no contest for me. I enjoyed the crap out of your previous Zappa videos

Brian Ashton

Ah yeah! I've been wanting to get into more Jethro Tull. I feel like I've been ruined by getting into Aqualung and Thick as a Brick first and everything else is just ok.

Kenneth Bernard

Zappa as always in these polls. I can never get enough of people's first time hearing him.

Ball_Soup

I’d love to hear you do an extended play of ‘Days of Future Passed’ by Moody Blues, or ‘Joe’s Garage’ by Frank Zappa, but I don’t think either would ever happen.

Jim Reeves

Tull for sure, they were my first exposure to early prog! So many fine choices for round two, Aqualung, Benefit, Thick as a Brick, Stand Up, War Child, Broadsword, etc.

Jim Reeves

Plus Tull is due to release a brand new album January 22nd! First in nearly 20 years!

Lee Roberts

This is really tough. Every one of those choices has at least one worthy album.

BRIAN MILLER

I voted for Frank Zappa this time, but will be happy if Jethro Tull wins. Tull had a lot of great albums, especially from 1969 to 1979

Rand Kelly

I vote for Frank Zappa because he utilizes classical composition with full symphonies. Joe’s Garage is lyrically rated x. I would seek out Roxy and Elsewhere

Richard Karbowski

I am voting for Tull, and really hoping for A Passion Play reaction! But please add Van der Graaf Generator to the poll at some point, they have several great albums (H To He, Godbluff, Still Life, etc.) to choose from.

Illume Eltanin

As I just posted on the Discord, I'm not holding my breath for the Moody Blues to ever be popularly voted as a selection in the polls. But, I'll keep pulling for them, as the Magnificent Seven, in chronological order, are must listening.

Nickie Kelly

I went for Zappa, too...but would also love Moodys and Tull, esp Songs From the Wood or Minstrel

Glenn Matteson

Gotta go with Zappa here. Obviously there's a ton to choose from. Perhaps explore some of his early work like We're Only In It For The Money, Burnt Weeny Sandwich or Weasels Ripped My Flesh. Hot Rats or Chunga's Revenge would also be good choices. Or maybe his first truly commercially successful album, Overnight Sensation.

Bryan Tursk

He's done all these bands but Zep. Wouldn't it be good to hear some new band reactions?

Andrew Wingham

Ref Richard - I saw Van de Graf Generator a couple of times, back in the day. I'd be pleased to gain a reaction to their music

Les Mable

Jethro Tull... Heavy Horses would be good... (a favourite since I bought the vinyl in 1978). But for what it's worth, my first "proper" LP was Van Der Graaf Generator, their 68-71 compilation.

Rick Morse

My Jethro Tull album vote would be for "Songs From the Wood". Ian Anderson is on record that on the whole, it was the pinnacle musically of what the group accomplished. It featured far more writing from the group as a whole, including the significant contributions of Dee Palmer, who was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in 1994.

John Belcher

Oh, what to do! Listen to Minstrels in the Gallery the other day and forgotten how good it was!

Bradley Stone

If JT wins, you could review the new release, "The Zealot Gene", coming out this month!

JiriK

tool > tull

Michel Paré

Vote for jethro tull and go for ministrel in the gallery or passion play….

Frank Reimann

I voter for Zappa and would be happy with any Album of his, but especially his amazing orchestra work 'the Yellow Shark' which he put on stage and recorded so short before his passing

ArTi

For Jethro I would strongly recommend A Passion Play - it's their most ambitious and challenging music ever.

Erik Berg

All fantastic choices but Tull is one of my favourite bands of all time so I gotta go with them!

Ole Martin

I see people mention Van der Graaf Generator.. They have several great albums, but I absolutely love Godbluff. I would really enjoy watching you react to their albums, Doug!

Richard Moore

I hope it's A Passion Play. Minstrel in the Gallery would be my second choice, but there are several close runners-up.

Michael Kramer

I do hope, Jethro Tull and „A Passion Play“ wins

Einaras Sipavičius

Yes, I'm glad not only me mention Van der Graaf Generator. Really hoping to see them in such a poll. This time I voted for Led Zeppelin, they really lack coverage on Doug's channel.

Great Scott

i may push for War Child -- one of the albums that got overplayed in my house back in the day.

mike.cats.guns

I understand there are really good compositions by Led Zeppelin, but I don't see any of it as worth Doug's time on the channel.

AussieOwlCat

I haven't seen Nightwish on any of these polls!!! :D

Owen Edmonds

It's like choosing your favourite child...... Voted for Tull

Øyvind Rønningstad

Really hoping for more Pain of Salvation. The previous pick (King of Loss) was a bit of a fringe (though very good) song, I really want to hear your commentary on Daniel's raw emotional lyrics. The album Remedy Lane is a particularly personal one, as are the two latest, while Be is deeply philosophical.

Steve MacArthur

I think an Extended Play with the Pat Metheny Group would be delightful; my personal choice would be "First Circle", which kind of brought the first era of the PMG to a close before they left ECM. I don't think blocking has been an issue in the Patreon/Vimeo world, though I suppose there's always the opportunity for a first...Happy New Year!

Matthew Hackbert

If Jethro Tull Wins, I'm hoping for Minstrel in the Gallery

Robert Steinman

I seem to be in the minority but Zep should get its due. The easy choice would be 4 and it's a great choice but Houses of the Holy would probably be more interesting and appealing to you, Doug. But truly anything from II (no disrespect to I) up to physical graffiti merits a long listen.

Ryan Quick

Careful, doing Zep may get you blocked. But they're my choice. IV is the obvious first Zep album to analyze, but Houses or Presence would be fantastic too.

BRIAN MILLER

This would be for Patreon patrons only, and hosted on a private vimeo link, not a public YouTube link. So blocking should not be an issue. That is how he was able to do King Crimson before.

Aaron West

I think so too just to mix things up. I’d probably choose Physical Graffiti although, you know, long album.

Great Scott

if Zep I'd like In thru the out door, with Carouselambra on it (among others), but it's looking like it'll be Tull.

Anonymous

Seems most Led Zeppelin fans would disagree, but to me Physical Graffiti is their best studio album.

Anonymous

Oh, but I don't think it would be a great choice for an extended play - it's a bunch of songs. Personally I'd prefer these to mostly cover concept albums.

Randy Hammill

It’s a bunch of *great* songs. I think it was their true pinnacle, taking everything from III, IV and Houses of the Holy and blending it into one. That’s not to say that those albums weren’t also awesome, but each sort of had its own identity, while PG had a bit of all of them and more.

BRIAN MILLER

Looks like Jethro Tull won round 1. For round 2 poll, I suggest giving the options Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung, A Passion Play, Warchild, Minstrel in the Gallery, Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses, Stormwatch

Anderson Davies

Definitely Passion Play and Heavy Horses, but also Crest of a Knave and why not (lyrics are funny) Too Old to Rock'n'Roll and A (which is more interesting to me since I read about it in the 40th anniversary edition)

Bryan Sheehan

In my opinion, I'd love to see reactions for A Passion Play or possibly Minstrel for Tull. My favorite Tull era is the mid-70s, which is pretty much the case for any band that was around at that time. Something about the 70s creativity, production, the sounds, etc. A lot more warmth compared to earlier or later stuff.

David Crossen

It's got to be either Aqualung, A Passion Play, War Child or Minstrel in the Gallery

Great Scott

Crest of a Knave has my fav Steel Monkey -- why that didn't get airplay is beyond me.

Anderson Davies

I love the whole album for the sound alone, especially after the lame one before. And Steel Monkey got awarded hard rock song of the year...yep! And I agree with your wondering. "A" has, as far as the band members say the most difficult track on it, which they failed to play correct live not only once: Black Sunday. That would be quite a treat for our Doug to decipher :) --- but I guess it would never be voted top anyway.
