In this episode, I'm tackling the forms of the minor scale and the types of embellishing (or non-chord) tones. This stems directly from discussion on Discord, and I'm thankful for the questions and interest.

We'll be applying these concepts to music by Bach and Mozart. Please let me know if you have further questions or inquiries!

Love this, Doug! I’ve had music theory in university in Norway, but needed to freshen up and learn the expressions in English.

As someone who is not a schooled musician (and a drummer, too, so there's two strikes against me!), you've helped me understand more in the past year or so than I ever knew before. One of the things that I've always marveled at has been, no matter what type of music, how a melody can be put onto a series of chords, and how fascinating this can make a piece of music. Over the years, I have gravitated towards the more inventive examples of this (Steely Dan is a nice case-in-point), and now I have some insight into why I find those pieces so intriguing. Thank you, Doug. You've opened my eyes in so many ways to the nuts and bolts of what makes music so wondrous!

No coverage of the Dorian scale?

Loved the Bach Invention example here. I remember doing this as a marimba duet in my college percussion ensemble, occasionally substituting the xylophone on the treble part for a change of pace. Using the marimba gave us more opportunity for expression within the piece, particularly during the tremolo. This also became one my standard warm up pieces on a keyboard. As others have said, I love this stuff, bringing me back to my college music theory stuff. I left that behind a long time ago, last performing (timpani and other percussion) in 1993. So it's great to get back to it, at least vicariously and at a distance.

Thanks for the refresher course. As a percussion major in my early years I've always look forward to music theory classes.

Love it Doug! Takes me back to my college music days, and how much I’ve forgotten!! Haha… I remember having to analyze Bach Chorales, this brought back good memories!! Thanks…
