in reality, all armor is meant to be worn with under-armor. what we think of as full plate mail is actually layers upon layers of protection against different weapons. plate armor is great against piercing things like arrows, bolts, rapiers and spears, and under that would normally be chain mail, which deflects slashing weapons very well (swords and axes). lastly, as a layer of both comfort and padding, leather and cloth would be on the bottom, which would also act as a shock absorber against bludgeoning weapons like maces, hammers, and clubs. Helmets were usually the exception to the layers rule, normally only having a light leather coif and then the plate helmet.

Whatever comforting layers are involved, this specific /depicted/ design still has non-flexible chunk of metal in the groin area, digging into thighs at every move. Historically, joints were never plated at the inner surfaces, only mail voiders or just non-metal undergarments. Closest historical item would be the codpiece and it was worn quite far from the body and very loosely attached, to not hinder mobility.
