I'm personally not a huge fan of the Raine/Zen ship myself, but I have no problem with it in the Modern AU or any other non-canon context. That's the whole point of sketches, after all, to let people have fun with non-canon ideas. The only thing that bothers me is when some folks start treating sketch stuff as canon and projecting it onto the actual comic while ignoring what the story is clearly building (like Red/Raine). That's where it gets a bit frustrating for me.

Abstract Indigo

In canon? There’s basically nothing there to build on. In AUs/non-canon sketches? Most Raine/Zen pieces, including this one, are pretty static. They’re just placed in a scene together with almost no real dialogue, interaction, or developed dynamic. There’s very little to interpret. For contrast, the Backstage AU has actual interactions between Trace/Laura that give you a feel for their relationship, which makes the pairing feel like it has some unique charm and substance. There are a couple of exceptions like the Jan sketch where Raine catches Zen shaving abs into his fur, but as it stands their relationship is more or less a blank slate.

For me, it's just irresistible to see these two cute floofers together. The colored Raine & Zen sketches are some of my favorite that pop up on my rotating backgrounds. But I do see your point, and I enjoyed reading your critical analysis. Canonically and non-canonically, they don't have much going on- certainly not as much as (to take your example) Trace and Laura in Backstage AU (also some of favorite content).

@Revan - Yeah, there's nothing wrong with just enjoying the nice art for what it is, and they do make for cute standalone sketches. Tom consistently manages to nail the cosy vibe with his execution. It might be nice if future prompts fleshed out the couple more instead of them being 'just there' because it could be quite charming.
