You go to any woman who's holding their newborn and tell them that the child needs to be killed. I imagine vowing to make your death painful will be a common theme. While she's certainly going overboard, her actions here are understandable. Not right, but understandable.

I see an allegory here. Mother wolves and mother bears will protect their offspring with their lives-threatening those who try to harm them, or who may become threats in the future. In this case, Mary is the 'mother wolf', protecting Raine-who at that moment could literally be considered her 'cub'-and given what Evil Trace does to Mary at some point, I'd say it's a fitting comparison.

On the one hand, I think Raine is probably too kind-hearted to approve of her mother threatening the midwife; on the other, I think if she knew Mary felt this kind of protectiveness toward her, it would go a long way to mending their relationship. ^_^
