You're missing the transcript links, again. And the content warnings are missing too. I really wanna believe you're trying to do better but each week it becomes harder to believe. Please. Do better.

I absolutely loved listening to this episode, I swear I could listen to these four people continue to talk about this topic for the next six or so hours (also the more stories Hannah tells of her lived experiences on this podcast, the more I believe that she's the main character of about sixteen different movies that ALL have different genres). Also I do have to say, "Why must you do this to my sanity, it's carefully constructed," is a HELL of a quote and perfectly manages to sum up this entire episode

sAZAndorable

Welp, I teared up a couple times. Absolute delight. I loved all the fun facts and theories and philosophical considerations SO much. This show is such a pick-me-up every time! Also I vote for Helen to be our alien ambassador too

Saya

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, so many fascinating and insightful ideas, genuinely thought provoking and touching by turns

LainyJP

Helen would absolutely be the best alien diplomat!

Lizzy_belle

I love that Hannah's teacher thought that she was an indigo or crystal child Like there's some random Midwestern town that wants their Sun Summoner back

About the alien abduction insurance claim, i only looked at 2 websites abt it but heres some quotes: "St. Lawrence told Fox 35 that the policies were intended only for those with a sense of humor. “To people that come to me, if I don’t think they understand the terms and conditions, that this is tongue-in-cheek, I won’t sell it to them,” he said. St. Lawrence admitted, however, that he has actually paid out on one claim. One policyholder talked to a professor at MIT who examined an implant that allegedly came from the policyholder’s body. The professor allegedly said that the implant was not made of any earthly substance, according to Fox 35. St. Lawrence said that he considered that to be tangible proof, and the agency paid the claimant $1 per year for 10 years before losing contact with him. At press time, there was no word on whether the policyholder was still residing on Earth." From: https://www.insurancebusinessmag.com/us/news/breaking-news/abducted-by-aliens-theres-a-policy-for-that-173889.aspx And "St. Lawrence said one policy holder who made a claim had talked with a professor at MIT who examined an implant that came out of the policy holder’s body and stated to him that the implant was not made of any earthly substance which St. Lawrence said he considered to be tangible proof. “I said we’re going to waive the signature and we started paying him a dollar a year for 10 years before we lost contact with him,” said St. Lawrence. St. Lawrence may have started the policy in jest, but he said today people are taking it a little more seriously. “When I started most people thought it was completely absurd, and today I’d say 50 percent of the people think it’s a possibility,” said St. Lawrence." Also, "his agency offers limited or comprehensive alien abduction insurance, as well as reincarnation insurance, asteroid insurance and even insurance for anyone who storms Area 51 and doesn’t make it out alive" From: https://www.fox5dc.com/news/florida-company-has-sold-thousands-of-alien-abduction-insurance-policies-and-paid-out-on-1.amp Unless Alex is talking about a different alien abduction insurance company? Lolll

Hannah, it was Sandpoint, wasn't it? I know it was.

Lark

That was fantastic! And yes about senses. My kid has sensory processing disorder. I haven't heard about 20 senses, but vestibular sense is balance, knowing if you are up or down; and proprioception is knowing where your body is in space; and interoception is knowing what's happening inside your body. So that's at least 8 senses. Same kid also loves Sphere. My favorite alien book is The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell, which requires content warnings for sexual abuse. The author is an anthropologist, so that makes it really interesting. Thanks for letting us listen in!

sandra

TakYelgif

GugTheGoose

Oh The Kraken Wakes! With (SPOILERS) Chekhov's bricklaying course

Evie

I love all the reading suggestions and research rabbit holes i got from this episode - so interesting!

rowanoak

Oh man Childhood’s End!!! That book got me more into sci fi and horror than anything else I read in college. Hearing Alex bring it up brought all kinds of memories back!

SpadesThicc

The fermi paradox sucks! It assumes space travel is possible and there's only increasing evidence that long term space travel isn't ever going to happen. Other popular interpretations assume that all intelligent life in the universe *will* use radio waves or similar em spectrum communication and that because we don't see any coming from space in what resembles an intelligent pattern humanity /clearly/ must either exist millions of years before or after other sapient life. This completwly disregards how likely it is that we wouldn't recognize alien communication patterns because why would a civilization that developed language and science and technology completely separately from us, why would their language patterns resemble ours in any way. Additionally it assumes that aliens use em spectrum communications just like humans do because we've clearly figured out the best way to do things

MANTIS SHRIMP CANT SEE SECRET COLORS BUT THEIR VISION IS SUPER COOL. THEY CAN SEE UV LIGHT AND ALSO THE POLARIZATION OF LIGHT. ESSENTIALLY THEY CAN SEE THE WAY THE ELECTRIC FIELD PART OF LIGHT GETS ANGLED WHEN ITS DISRUPTED OR SCATTERED IN SOME WAY. So yeah

Christy

I love this episode so much. I haven’t even read or listened to the Voyager probe stuff but just hearing them talk about it makes me tear up bc it’s just lovely.
