I could make a sarcastic joke here about how once again I'm delivering only the most cutting edge of video game topics to you but... nah... this is REAL gamer talk time, no irony allowed.

I haven't come down on a game in a while quite as much as I do in this video. But at the end of the day I just didn't connect very much with it and that's worth talking about when I think there's something interesting to think about or learn in the deconstruction.

Anyway, things have been bit a bit slow this month again. I might try and get out some more short stuff before the end of the month, but then I really wanna get back on some meaty projects again. Hopefully the November one, that's been on hold.

Catch you back here soon.

A lot of your critique of the gameplay of nights is spot on or at least fair but I think your dismissal of it being representative of Sega's ego is unfair. NiGHTS is an expression of the confidence children can sometimes lack in reality, and their smug demear is an expression meant to embolden young players to reach their true potential. I think their characterization is an important flavor in the whole dish, moreso than it was in Sonic. NiGHTS was conceived as a more involved 3D platformer but the team struggled for a long time with it before falling back on what they knew(tight movement based gameplay in an arcade loop) to get the game out as deadlines closed in. It wasn't everything they imagined it would be and it wasn't competitive in the gaming market at the time but to frame it as a project presented with a lack of awareness is unfair imo. It was a grand experiment by a team who had felt put in a box by the Sonic brand at that point in time. The fact that it came up so short and they ended up back in the Sonic mines until burnout caught up with them and the whole thing fell apart is tragic to me more than anything. NiGHTS feels more like a cry for help to me than an egoist's scree, but most people aren't going to go into the game with that context so I understand your pov too. Tldr: NiGHTS is a very flawed game and a bizzare choice to stake a console on, 100% worth critiquing from an outsider's pov but I never got a smug sense of self satisfaction from the game. It's a pretty earnest expression that deserves to be met with the same energy it gives out at least

I’ve made comparisons between these games in my head for years. You articulated it so well. Thank you.

Tbh I try and not look into "intent" too much until after playing a game and only if I'm intrigued enough. I like to take most things in a vacuum if I can, because I think most great art should stand up that way and both games got that treatment here. I'm not trying to attribute blame in my video as much as I'm just trying to express how the game comes off to me. As a result too, I can't pretend to meet it with an energy it wants and I'm not feeling. If I did that with every game I talk about, my channel would look very different! lol
