The Evil Within is a true Mikami game and feels like the actual sequel to Resident Evil 4. The agony crossbow is pretty much the best weapon in survival horror history, because it has so many different ways in which it can be applied to combat. The traps feed into the system, since you need their parts to build new bolts (it isn't really crafting and more like a currency. Each bolt costs a certain amount). The fighting system is also more involved with the match mechanic that I feel like most people didn't really use (same with the agony crossbow) and then got frustrated, because they played it like a normal third person shooter (Vanquish had a similar problem, but its differences were much more obvious). These gameplay mechanics feel like Mikami. The level design is also pretty much his RE4/God Hand style. Every god damn room is different and tries something new. Fuck, he even put the hook man mechanic from the old RE4 prototype into the game (and that chapter is RE fan service in itself). The second game basically is Downpour 2. Mikami didn't direct it. It's made by the guy who did the pretty awful DLC chapters (those are just modern stealth horror games where you can't attack anything. But built on a stealth system that only works as a part of the overall package). TEW 2 feels like a watered down sequel that just cut out all the things some people didn't like without adding anything new. Combat lacks the mechanical balance of the first game, it looks less gritty and it even has Fallout style dialogues with stock animations. It's Downpour 2, just slightly better.

It just seems The Evil Within is just a polarizing series. Some didn't like 1, some are liking 2, some love 2, some like 1 and 2 well enough, some like 1 but dislike 2, some didn't care for 1 and see 2 as worse somehow, and some loved 1 well enough and are loving 2. I don't want to play any TEW since it's reception is more of a mess than Sword Art Online.
