So, it's exactly what it says on the tin.

I was offered the opportunity last month to do a retrospective for Square-Enix on the FF7 games, leading up to the launch of Rebirth. Frankly as someone who is very familiar with the ins and outs of FF7 and its follow ups I figured it would be silly to say no.

There's always been so much I've wanted to say about these games -- I just didn't expect to be doing it as soon as this or on such a tight schedule as I ended up doing.

I once said I wouldn't do sponsorships for game companies, since I saw it as a conflict of interests. I still do to some degree but I mainly accepted this project because I felt like I was being hired more for my skills at explaining the story and themes of a game rather than just for the raw numbers of who can be reached through me to sell a product.

Years ago when I said I'd not do game sponsorships I saw myself doing sponsorships for non gaming related products. The reality is though, is that nobody is gonna want to invest more in a gaming channel than gaming products, and there's no other product I can drum up the same passion to talk about as much either.

As the years roll on it's clear we don't live in the world we once did. Content farming channels, plagiarists copy and pasting content and AI are all threatening to end the type of channel I run. The kind of channel where I spend weeks recording footage off original hardware and really delve into the nooks and crannies of some obscure title. A channel were I wait for inspiration to strike on a given subject rather than trying to retro-fit today's hot topic into my next video. I have to adapt to keep the core vision of the channel alive.

Either way I don't take these deals lightly, so there will always be thought put into what I accept to do.

Sponsored or not, I wanted this to be a great video and I'm really proud of it. Considering all of it was done in 3 weeks - from footage capture, to writing, to editing - it's a miracle I got it out on time. I thought I had never worked harder than on the FF16 video but this was bar far and away the hardest thing I've made. While the work was hard I do want to add that collaborating with Square was a positive experience and I'd be glad to work with them again given the right project.

I promised some more Patreon content this month but it may slip to next month as I recharge from this project. Either way I hope you enjoy it.

Catch you back here soon!

I agree with what you said about this sponsorship being good to work on since it suited your skills and knowledge. I personally prefer this style over a random block of the video where you advertise something unrelated to the video or your content like I've seen with other youtubers. You also put it right in the title so if anyone doesn't want to see a sponsored video, they can skip this one. Sucks about the tight deadline though!

I thought you'd been working on it for much longer, amazing you got it out in that time! It didn't come across as something you had a tight deadline on at all. I skipped around the part about FF7 after what the remake covered, since I only jumped on the many FF7 games with Remake(besides, back in the day, a viewing of Advent Children lol). But the parts I watched I thought were cool. My knowledge about FF7 is mostly cultural osmosis, so it was fun hearing about all the expanded universe stuff they did back then. I look forward to you taking a deeper dive into some of these some day, I figured you liked some Final Fantasy, but I didn't know you were an FF7 die-hard and already knew all these games. And I look forward to watching the FF7 segment when I get around to playing it first myself. As far as sponsorships by game companies go, I honestly don't like it, especially for channels that do critiques of games. I can't see it as anything but a conflict of interest. But I do sympathize with the struggles of keeping an independent gaming channel afloat, especially one diving into niche old stuff like Galerians or Genji or whatever. You gotta do what you gotta do to keep the lights on, and for what it's worth I still enjoyed the video.
