If you weren’t around to watch the Gong Show on afternoon US TV, from 1976 to 1978, there’s no way to explain Jaye P. Morgan. Let’s just say, rock stars did a lot of powdery white substances in those years. And the host, celebrity panelists and the guest acts on The Gong Show, seemed to be assisted by something more than just their talent and good humor. And Jaye P. Morgan was a centerpiece of that uniquely outrageous show. I couldn’t believe the network banned her for merely flashing the TV audience!! My final year of high school was so much more boring without seeing Jaye P. on afternoon TV. One of a kind! RIP

I never knew that 80% of the surface under London is clay. Let’s hope it does rain a lot this fall, Kate. 😬

Tomorrow the calendar flips to September. And while it’s not the beginning of Autumn yet, in my mind, summer is over. I can feel it in the air…the mornings and evenings have been cooler, the humidity has dissipated, and the sun is beginning to set during my drive home from work (usually around 7pm). This is the time of year when I’m reminded to slow the pace down, spend as much time as possible outdoors, take a walk along a beach, take a bike ride through a park, take a drive up to the Adirondacks, and get ready for the color explosion coming in a couple of months. You know the old saying…take time out to smell the roses. These are the days.

It’s been a good opening weekend for football season. My alma mater, James Madison University (Go, Dukes!!), opened the season under a new coach by beating a tough Liberty U. team.
Next, my fantasy football draft was this afternoon. It’s been seven years since I won a championship and that itch is getting pretty bad. With Bijan Robinson, Drake Maye, Trey McBride, Christian Watson, Houston’s defense and a solid bench, hopefully this is the foundation that will end that drought.
Finally, after the draft, I rewatched one of my favorite football-adjacent movies, The Fortune Cookie. A 1966 comedy, it is the first pairing of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, who received his Oscar here as Best Supporting Actor. A criminally overlooked classic.

Just watched Lucky Strike starring Scott Eastwood and Colin Hanks. Pretty awesome film based on a true story. Scott Eastwood looks so much like his dad when he was young. Great performances by everyone in a very intense and gripping story. The radio he is carrying is a Motorola SCR300. When I was in the US Army Signal Corps, I had the opportunity to examine a radio exactly like that in school. Very advanced for its time and, being filled with vacuum tubes and such, very heavy. Lol. Overall a great war movie. Would recommend.
Let’s remake a perfect adaption instead of coming up with a new, creative idea.
interesting… somehow I thought that Lonesome Dove was Louis L’amour, I never realized it was McMurtry. The original miniseries was excellent, they would really have to pull out all the stops to improve on that.
Speaking of Larry McMurty, I thought for many years he wrote and sang this song! I didn’t know it there was a JAMES McMurty too.
You want to know if a country band is old school, request this song.

Processing the events of 9/11 has always been difficult for me. My only personal connection was a cousin who worked in the Pentagon and was in the courtyard when the plane hit. He came out fine.
I had a standing appointment to donate blood a few days later, but I went to the Red Cross center to donate early. I wasn’t prepared for what I saw. Hundreds of people were queued up to donate. That hit me hard and I sat in my car and cried.
Of all the events that have made America feel like one community, 9/11 affected me the deepest and continues to do so. Even today, I can’t bring myself to watch any of the movies about that day’s events. For someone who loves film, that speaks volumes.
