Haven't watched yet, making a bet with myself that Kate's expression is from the science class scene...

Good choice! This is a fun one. I had no idea going into the cinema back in '97 that this was a satire, took me a good 15 min to catch on 😆 But it turned out to be very prescient about the wars in the Middle East and societal trends. I agree, the acting and script are "perfectly" bad, which this film needs. (Although I'd love to see Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, Al Pacino, and Robert De Niro deliver this dialogue! 😂) It's great that you started the "Verhoeven trilogy" with this one. Robocop is fantastic, and Total Recall is my favorite of the three. I'm sure you'll really enjoy both.

They didn't bring Rico back to life, his death was misreported. Also, you asked where that scene was filmed, which national park... Hell's Half Acre, Wyoming.

I think this might have been Verhovan’s first American film. Sometime this picture is just corny ( until you realize it’s a Satire )and some exciting violent war bits. I think of all the cinematic tropes in this movie. In a way we had The Whole boot camp thing, then the was elements of the 1930s French Foreign Legion or Cary Grant’s Gunga Din. Also a love story with a twist, maybe because have become liberated and fought along side the men. There were also a couple scenes of sacrifice for your team as well as a whipping scene right out of Master and Comander. Paul V is known for his violent scenes and also a fair share of sexuality. I think his favorite actor in his film was Rutger Hauer . Two of my favorite Paul V movies are Black Book and Flesh and Blood. The first is about a Jewish Girl during WW 2 becoming involved as a Spy for the Dutch Resistance and the lover of high ranking German. Flesh and Blood is a Medieval story of Mercenaries ( Rutger H.) with Jennifer Jason Leigh as a princess that was captured. Of course the two movies you hope to show are two of my favorites so I would be excited to see those. Thanks Kate this was fun Rick

This movie is a perfect example of a guilty pleasure. You can’t help but watch if you come across it while channel surfing. Much of the acting and dialogue are ultra cringy, lots of stupid decision making for the wrong reasons, and there is a plethora of gratuitous violence. But all of that is well balanced with a strong message about how propaganda and the glamorization of war can poison its target audience. Plus, the special FX and the bug design are pretty damn cool. When I first saw this movie, those last two aspects are really all I focused on (I’m a guy and I geek out on stuff like that, what else can I say). It took multiple viewings before I began to see the message behind the visuals on screen. Having his movies laced with social commentary is a signature Paul Verhoeven directorial style. As you’ll see when you watch Robocop and Total Recall. He has a couple of other good movies as well, like Hollow Man and Basic Instinct. But I beg of you, please…PLEASE do NOT watch Showgirls 😣. Don’t know if you caught it, but if you remember from early on in the movie, Carl has telepathic abilities. When Rico and his troopers were in the cave near the end of the movie, and Rico makes the decision to go down a different path than the one they were supposed to take, it was Carl who was telepathically telling him that Carmen was alive and how to find her. And yes, Clancy Brown (Sgt. Zim) was the cruel prison guard in Shawshank Redemption, but did you know he is the voice of Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob SquarePants? How funny would it have been if Dizz was doing a Roger Rabbit dance in the background as Carmen was breaking up with Rico in her video message?

Your reaction to this movie has given me some of my favorite Kate Kuotes: “Get his nuts!” “So everybody’s just gettin’ naked.” “Fat fuck off jet” Just 3 more things to add to the thousands of reasons why I will forever be a fan of Movie Date with Kate. As good as that trifecta of quotes is, I was really hoping when you first saw the Brain Bug and its pulsating vagina mouth, you would have blurted out “Oh, bugger!”

"I'm doing my part!" "Would you like to know more?" 😄😄 Great reaction as always!
