Bright Light! Bright Light! Christmas comes to MDwK 4 months early! And with the hot and humid weather we’ve had this past week, this will be a fun way to cool down. This is one of those movies I have to watch each Christmas. It will never be among the top holiday movies ever, but its filled with nostalgia, it provides some good laughs as well as some legit creepy moments, Gizmo is too cute, and the Gremlin Rag song is so damn catchy. Here’s a little bit of trivia for you - the original script was written more as a horror movie with more graphic violence that would have earned the movie an R rating. But Spielberg and Director Joe Dante wanted a more family friendly film, but they also didn’t want it to be so tame that it would be mistaken as a children’s movie. So some of the more graphic scenes were taken out and more comedic content was added, but they insisted that the plot maintain some dark and scary elements. So, because of this movie, which was marketed as a family friendly movie, but still had some scenes that might be too frightening for young children, along with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which was released the same year, Steven Spielberg suggested to the MPAA that a rating be created between an R rating and a PG rating…and so PG-13 was born. I’m away for the weekend on a business thingy (drove 6 hours to get here…ugh!), so I’ll be revisiting Kingston Falls with you when I get back home. Until then…….byyyeee Katieeee (doing my best Gizmo impression).

As an aspiring surfer way back when, guys who were learning the sport but had not yet gotten good at it were called gremlins. This got shortened to gremmies. Somewhere along the line that termed morphed into grommets. And we all ate after midnight.

We were all promised flying cars in the future, but the real travesty is that here we are in 2026 and we still don't have the Bathroom Buddy™.

2026-09-09 08:00 Your summary of how Spielberg and Dante were creative in their storytelling was spot on. You noticed that there were several classic movies shown on the tv’s throughout the movie…which helped in developing a more nostalgic feel. But Spielberg and Dante used them to also aid in setting the tone and as a method of foreshadowing. It’s A Wonderful Life was used to underscore the wholesomeness and comfort of small town life, a direct contrast to the chaos that was about to unfold in Kingston Falls. The movie with Clark Gable (To Please a Lady) showed him driving a race car, which was foreshadowing Gizmo’s heroics in the Barbie Car near the end of the film. And Invasion of the Body Snatchers showed the alien pods that foreshadowed the future transformation of The Mogwai into The Gremlins via cocoons . Just another example of Spielberg’s genius. This was a great way to close out the weekend…a classic Spielberg movie set at Christmas time on Movie Date with Kate at the tail end of summer. I will sleep well tonight. Thank you 🙏.

Hello. New here. A note about Hoyt Axton. He was a singer/songwriter, known for writing songs such as "Greenback Dollar" (a hit for the Kingston Trio), "Never Been to Spain", "Joy to the World" (both songs hits for Three Dog Night), "The No No Song" (Ringo Starr) and "The Pusher" (Steppenwolf). Possessed a wonderful baritone voice, he did indeed do voice over work and was a personal favorite singer best known tune he sang was probably "Boney Fingers"

Great fun! You might hear the gremlin cutting the phone line saying "phone home" as a nod to Spielberg's film e.t. Gremlins 2: The New Batch is a good follow up & I would love to watch it with you!
