This was a first time watch for me, and I really don’t know what to make of this movie. I felt like I was watching several other movies in this one film from start to finish. The opening scene gave me Indiana Jones vibes. The big space ship in the following scene looked like an Imperial Cruiser from Star Wars. The re-incarnation of Leeloo reminded me of the creation of Vision in Captain America: Civil War. Dallas flying his cab around NYC with a plethora of other flying cars felt like it came right out of Back to the Future II. Gary Oldman’s evil character, Zorg, and Toy Story’s evil Emperor Zurg? The female military officer with the Princess Leia buns? Even Dallas’ slo mo leap off of the balcony was reminiscent of John McClane’s leap off of the roof of the Nakatomi Tower. I liked the plot, but the execution was a bit convoluted and the acting by almost every (other than Bruce, who was his usual Bruciness) was questionable . And Mila Jojovich actually showed depth and range during the 2nd half of the movie. Even Gary Oldman, who I absolutely love as an actor, seemed out of sorts in this role. However, I thought there were some good elements (pun intended) as well. The aesthetics were visually attractive…great use of color and texture. It was a very vibrant film, which was refreshing for a Sci-Fi flick, which tend to be more dystopian when there is a futuristic setting. The soundtrack was an interesting and fun mix of genres and styles. And I would pay good money to eat from a floating boat restaurant 😋. And there were definitely some funny moments…most of them involving Chris Tucker. Why did his first hairstyle look like a blow dryer?! 🤭 And the ending showing how the elements needed to be activated was done well. Capped off by Leeloo having the world’s most powerful orgasm to save Earth. How funny would it have been if, right before the bomb exploded, instead of Zorg saying “oh no”, he looked right into the camera, and with a really deadpan expression, said “Bummer”. I don’t know, Kate. Mixed feelings about this one. But it had enough to prompt me into giving it another watch at some point, but probably not anytime soon. Great commentary from you once again…but that’s no surprise. Ciao for now.
