Holy balls! I was just watching this BOC video yesterday 😄 (Well, the video with the kid on bicycle but still...)

Audrey Seningen

Yess! Also you putting this out the same week as the reissue of Hi Scores has me thinking you have the BOC inside scoop 😂. Interesting what you mentioned about the hollow “tube” like sound, I always conceptualized that sound as the air inside a balloon and wondered if it was a reference to the title or vice versa.

no babaaammm, skam!

So, fun story: at the beginning of time, when they were still in Sheffield, I went for a job as talent scout at Warp records. One of the questions was "If you could sign anyone who's already out there, who would it be?" (paraphrasing a bit, this was like... 30 years ago?) and I said "These guys called Boards of Canada, they have this one tune they have that feels otherworldly in a way I can't quite articulate". "Oh interesting: yeah, we know of them, we think you should keep your eye on them...". Then maybe, 6 months later or something "Music Has the Right" comes out as a joint release between Skam and Warp. Didn't really have a chance at the job because I couldn't drive, but this song always reminds me of that moment in my life seeing as "Everything You Do" was the tune I was talking about

ixi music

No I just seem to have uncanny luck with my timing! 😆

NicTunes

ixi has insider knowledge for sure! I distinctly recall BoC releasing a new song the day after she reacted to Tomorrow's Harvest and thinking, "What are the odds of that happening?!"... another coincidence? I think not! It's a conspirixi, I tells ya! 😄

Quinzhee Jones

Interesting that you say the square waves sound hollow. For me it was definitely the intro that sounds hollow, and the waves in contrast sound very full. So cool that music can lead to different opinions like that!

NicTunes

Higher than a kite right now - some might say a balloon! 🎈 Thanks for diving deeper into BoC's discography! I've been keen to get stuck into their EPs and rare material, but decided to hold off in case you would ixplore them at some point. I guess good things do come to those who wait... so muchly appreciate this! 😊 This wasn't a listening party livestream I happened to miss, was it? Because I wouldn't be surprised. Chronic lateness is definitely part of my charm! That's why it hurts a little when the Swedes call me NikLåtar 😄

NicTunes

Oh wait, never mind! I just realised this isn't a reaction to the full Hi Scores EP; it's an analysis of just the song "Everything You Do Is A Balloon". I got confused and thought that was the EP title 😅 Casual BoC listener mistake! You can go ahead and call me a fake fan if you like 😉

NicTunes

Haha yeah, I realised not long after I posted that, and mentioned it in my reply above 😅 Thanks for clearing things up anyway! It's good to know I didn't miss anything special. Listening to a full album or EP for the first time is way more fun when we get to experience it together as a group!

NicTunes

But ixi, how will you analyse other BoC recommendations if everything you do is a balloon? 😀 All silliness aside, I look forward to whatever song you decide to tackle next! I still don't understand a great deal when it comes to music theory, but hearing you explain the magic going on beneath the surface of a track is endlessly fascinating to me. You're spot on with the hollow tube/empty column comparison, and what you said about "arrival chords" was really thought-provoking. Also, why am I not surprised the part that made your heart melt sounded like a cat meowing? 😄 It's interesting how anemoia has essentially become BoC's defining characteristic as well. Ever since I requested "Wildlife Analysis" during one of your livestreams and mentioned feeling a strange, unexplainable nostalgia when I listen to it, I've noticed so many others sharing that exact same sentiment about their music. I had no idea anyone else felt that way. It's very surreal and comforting to know how deeply it resonates throughout the fanbase. I'm ready when you are to do a livestream where we have meaningful discussions about life while listening to their music! 🙂
