I love your taste in music! This past Tuesday night I went to my first TOOL concert in Nashville. I’d never seen any footage of their live performances and was blown away (it was very trippy)! Maynard, Trent, and Tori are my Holy Trinity of musicians and with that TOOL concert I had finally seen them all live. ☺️

This fills my heart with joy joy feelings!

Ixi: "I don't know if I'm explaining myself properly" < -- me any time I try and talk about Tori

This is amazing! I also highly recommend her songs Leather, The Wrong Band, Little Earthquakes, Girl, Winter, so many good ones!

Oh my goodness, I started following you at the best possible time. I've loved Tori since the 90's. 🥰 And I couldn't agree more -- her charisma is just un-be-lievable! Fun fact -- these last years I've been setting my alarm at 6:48 to be able to snooze once and wake up to the clock reading 6:58, thinking to myself "are you sure where your spark is?"

What's weird about Tori's piano playing is that even I, a fat-fingered non-professional, to which any form of coherent piano playing seems like pure magic, am able to detect that whoa, Tori's way of playing is something else entirely.

I first heard Tori in my car while driving on a chilly, damp evening in September 1992 when she appeared on The Mountain Stage show. I was so overwhelmed I almost had to pull the car over to stop and listen. Thanks so much for the video and commentary!

Yay! I'm so glad that you turned the corner on Tori Amos! I remember being so surprised when you said in the past that you didn't really connect with her music, because it seems so up your alley. Seeing you get emotional made me cry, but in a good way. <3

The thing with an artist like Tori is that it is so much more than 'just music'. She fully embodies her art and if you are ready for it and also brave enough to open yourself a little bit to fullness of what she provides it's starting to resonate on more than one level and it can be overwhelming. Witnessing not only a genius musician but a person so unashamedly being him/herself hits on so many levels - especially if you are a musician yourself. And the intimacy! So many of us wouldn't even dare to perform in such an intimate way if it's just and one other person in the room, yet, her she is doing THAT on stage. And everything is so sensual - so many layers to everything. She's playing, teasing, yet just being herself and so much at the same time but never to show off or ever wanting something from us, the audience. It's bold and humble at the same time. Then the level of virtuosity, the lyrics, her angelic voice on top of what she's playing, the way she is playing it, the effortlessness, the authenticity and courage and on top ofc her beauty and how much more beautiful all that qualities make a person...all that resonates to deeply. It's watching something we wouldn't have come up by ourselves because it would have been too much - especially coming from...being what we are. Something that seems not possible and yet we get to witness it and not only barely pulled off but flawless and seemingly effortless. It's one unlikely wonderous thing stacked on top of each other...I mean what are the chances that a person gifted as that, writes that music, has that voice, plays piano all of her life, has that talent, so much to say, is that beautiful and on top of it all born to perform on stage... On top of all of that her heart wrenching story and the fact that she became all that despite of it or as a result of it - which alone can make you sit and think and reflect on it for days. All that resonates with so many things within. Every little aspect of being a musician has a feeling for that. The little imposter in us is mesmerized and baffled, our longing to find our true voice is moved to tears seeing another person having not only found theirs but being able to so freely and naturally share it with the world. It's our desire to master an instrument or even anything in life truly and to the level of not having to think or strain ourselves in any way anymore. Yeah, I could go on but it's incredible to witness something like that. Something you really are in awe off. How rare and wonderful. I wish everyone is able to find that in some other person on the planet.

So, I remember from reading a comment on YANTA’s YouTube channel (he’s transcribed and done tutorials for a boat load of Tori’s songs) that the sample used in her Kurweil (if I’ve spelled that right) keyboard comes from an old guitar sample from a Mellotron. He also has a video on how to play Precious Things (though it maybe simplified as Tori is insane on the piano): https://youtu.be/rJZuQ-tt0CE?si=TOB4YEq_Xxfztj8F There is a live version of Professional Widow on the Harmonium called the Merry Widow version that completely changes everything. It’s original caustic tone into this morbid anger that’s so powerful (I may request it next month). I highly recommend checking out Caught a Lite Sneeze and The Waitress from her Sessions at 54th set in 1999. They’re so impactful. Sorry, had to gush, I can’t play piano, but I want to so badly and her music only bolstered that. Also, the flat 6th is incredible. #flatsixthclub

I'm in tears watching you in tears over Tori Amos. I'm not a fan of hers, necessarily. But she came along so incredibly strongly at a time in my life and looked right through me through her music. She... that time... I've never really... there was no other time like that in my life. She was the background music and songs of a time long ago that I'll likely never fully recover from. It was and is so beautifully and perfectly painful. Listen to Baker Baker and Hey Jupiter. They're a couple of the most delicate songs of hers speaking of such fragile emotions of love and loss and loving anyway in the face of loss.

Klors

I tried to get Ixi to listen to the Merry Widow version, but she thought she had heard it because, y'know, Professional Widow. So, yes, request it and then she'll learn more about the power of Tori to make the same song sound like a completely reimagined song. I also love her audience-wrangling in it :)

It’s all a very special moment. I have tried to see if there on any live performances of it, but the quality just isn’t there. Her 1997 Madison Square Garden version of Pretty Good Year is another highlight

lol at least I'm not the only one blushing when she throws those looks. Love this.

Tori is talent off the charts. In college when I was delivering pizza and super broke, I went through a period of time where I'd hit up the local library for albums from artists I'd always liked but never checked out their discog. I found some fun albums like Bonnie Raitt's Souls Alike, Aerosmith's Just Push Play, and John Mayer's Room For Squares. One album that really stuck with me was Tori's American Doll Pose. Really interesting album with great rhythms and a bold concept. I still listen to Big Wheel and Teenage Hustling regularly these days. I caught up to the rest of her albums that I hadn't heard from that point (i'd only really heard Under the Pink and some of Little Earthquakes). Hearing her always takes me back to college. I still love listening to her on long drives. A somewhat recent song of hers that gives me chills is Reindeer King from her Native Invaders album. Such a beautiful and haunting song

Once ages ago we did a Bowie listening party where we all got to request a Bowie song and watch your reaction to it. Would kill for something similar with Tori. Her catalogue is so diverse and she's just so fucking good.
