Welp, there's almost 10 inches of snow on the ground already this morning, work's cancelled, and there's supposed to be another 10 inches coming over the next several hours. White out conditions out there. Absolute perfect time to watch this wonderfully sort of strange and awesome movie. Random recommendation that came to mind writing out wonderfully sort of strange, Terry Gilliam's Brazil (1985). You might recognize the name Terry Gilliam as one of the Monty Python crew, though he mostly was behind the scenes directing and doing the animation. He's directed some other wonderfully sort of strange movies that you guys should absolutely check out like Time Bandits (1981), 12 Monkeys (1995) and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998). All are pretty highly recommended movies, and definitely should be added to The List. Especially I would say Time Bandits and Fear and Loathing. George in particular would like Fear and Loathing I think.

Haven't seen this one yet but have wanted to for years. Stoked to watch it with you guys later.

You have to Parasite (2019) (same director but a Korean language film) in the near future. It's nuts.

Renee MeowMeow Beans

I haven't seen it either! I've meant to for years but I'm a-scared it will hurt my feelings.😆 I'm looking forward to this though. But I love Chris Evans as an actor - I think he's underrated because he's so conventionally attractive. I never expected to like Captain America, but man did he sell that role.

kbobravo

Will be watching this later tonight. Bong Joon Ho is an amazing Director. Parasite is a must-see. It was the first Korean film to ever win an Oscar. It should not have been, but it was deserving every award it got.

j...

100% agree. Not only that, but it's the first foreign film to win Best Picture. Wholly deserved.

Mastervodo

This is such a thoughtful movie. You could watch it 3 times and still uncover the social commentary it is trying to convey.

E. D.

I´m not religious but for the love of God watch A Beautiful Mind and The Hours please, been waiting for 1,5 yrs now^^ (a great Ed Harris is in both of these by the way). And 3 must-watch movies with Douglas: War of the Roses, Falling Down, The Game and any movie by Adrian Lyne with him in it)

G P

Check out Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) for the backstory

sarCC

[extremely Ah-nuld voice] Cool!

In source msterial the bars were made out of human feces

Alexrandom

I love this film so much ! One of my favourite director. Hope you watch all of his movies. They're all worth it. Park chan wook is also one of the great Korean director. His movie JSA is one of the most beautiful story I've ever seen.

Amar

Korean movies are some of the best cinema around right now. Past Lives is another great film though maybe a different genre.

Amar

Another film with a unique premise and mostly set on a train is "Source Code" with Jake Gyllenhaal. A fun two hours trying to figure out what the next move is.

Jared Winn

I was getting more of an Executioner’s mask from the “special forces” and not that they were blind. You could see the actors eyes through when the angle was right. More Bong Joon Ho directed/Song Kang-Ho acted/ Korean movies, please. “The Good, the Bad, the Strange” is a personal favorite but a rewatch of Parasite is also needed.

JoeySnowyNoey

This movie has always been very dense and hard for me to follow in the past but I’m gonna give it a try again with you guys! I fucking love the whole vibe of this movie and the metaphor but damn something about it just makes it hard to follow the narrative for me. Idk what it is.

Tenn Seven

I dig this movie. It has its flaws, but all in all it's a fun watch. The Snowpiercer show was really good, too.

Opti_Frog

According to the film's director, humanity manages to beat the odds by not only surviving but repopulating the Earth. "For them to procreate, it's going to take a little time" he explained. "So, for me, it's a very hopeful ending. [...] Those two kids will spread the human race." So humanity's future in the Snowpiercer world is one of massive inbreeding. Not ideal! 😅

Odd Thomas

I liked the bit where there was snow and the trained PIERCED it, heh

Odd Thomas

My favourite Bong Joon-Ho movie is The Host. Great monster movie with effects by WETA. Parasite was good but I have zero urge to rewatch it.

JokerDanny

Never seen this movie before and it was great. The one problem I have is the casting of the black actress as a starving passenger because well no disrespect but she's a big woman and if she has been on the train for 17 years living of jellied cockroach then she wouldn't be the size she is. I think it was bad casting.

beefjerkywizard

"He looks like Tom Holland" coincidentally both actors played a character called Billy Elliot. One in a movie and one in play based on the movie. The movie should definitely be added to the list. Also both actors were members of the Fantastic Four in two different versions of the group.

Spacedone

Excellent! I was going to watch this the other night but then I remembered that it'd been doing well in a poll so decided to wait for your reaction. Nice to see I didn't have very long to wait :D

Odd Thomas

The Tom Hollandy guy is Jamie Bell. He was in a Peter Jackson's King Kong.

Poddington

I think they shot it in a way where they had the freedom tohave made the bars be made from anything. They never say what it is made from and I think Chris Evans reaction to bugs being turned into the bars is a bit over the top, especially when at one time he had been eating babies. It's likely that they either did not know what they were going to put there or a decision was made to change it to bugs after the fact.

George, If you were with me, you wouldn't be here in this strip club shaking it for dollar bills!

🖤I'm glad to finally have seen this movie because there has been a running joke my friends make at my expense based on the movie but never got it because I never got around to seeing it. Beef Gelatine is said to be very good for you, the stuff that makes Jello...Jelloy. But instead of buying Jello I make my own. I buy tubs of beef gelatine, dissolve it in water and flavor it however I feel. I put it in trays to solidify in the fridge and cut it into bars. This grosses my friends out for some reason (I guess because it's called beef gelatine) and they'll be like "What did you have for dinner? You eating that Snowpiercer shit?" or "Well Baron knows how to cook, he got himself a copy of that Snowpiercer cookbook Chris Evans came out with" like dumb comments like that LOL. Never got around to seeing the movie until today, but now I actually get the reference.

I saw Love Lies Bleeding yesterday so I’m doubly excited. A good week for evil Ed Harris. Love Lies Bleeding is great btw it’s like Tony Scott made a She-Hulk movie in 1990.

Odd Thomas

Alison Pill is great in 'Picard', though you'd really need to watch Star Trek: The Next Generation to fully appreciate it. She's also great in a film called All My Puny Sorrows.

AstralCars

The best bong hits are the Bong Joon Ho hits! Please react to Memories of Murder (2003) 😎

Spacedone

Unless that movie has an alternative title in other parts of the world, I assume you're talking about 'The Good, The Bad, The Weird'. Great movie.

Spacedone

The CJ Entertainment movie studio intro that you commented on is one of my favourites. They've released so many of my favourite Korean films so every time I hear those kids playing it's almost like a sign of quality to come. A few other movies from them that I'd highly recommend, all three of them also star Song Kang-ho: - Joint Security Area (Park Chan-wook) - Sympathy for Mr Vengeance (Park Chan-wook) - Memories of Murder (Bong Joon-ho) Oh and definitely watch The Host if you haven't seen that already.

Bennett Holleman

Tangle is a Korean dish consisting of blended algae and seaweed threads also called kelp noodles.

Johen Kay

Awesome! Thanks for reacting to this movie. Absolutely a fun watch.

Matt

Fav Bong Joon-ho films I'd highly recommend Memorys of Murder 2003, Okja 2017 and Parasite 2019

Johen Kay

You should watch the Snowpiercer t.v. show now.

djKENTO

The VERY NIGHT that Avengers had its big red carpet premiere they shot the Shawarma scene that was added to the end of the film. Chris Evans still had the beard from this movie because they weren’t done filming. So if you go back and watch the Shawarma scene you’ll see that Chris is covering his face and has TERRIBLE make up trying to hide his beard. Also the premiere screen at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin Texas is named after Bong Joon-ho and is VERY nice.

djKENTO

also i love you guys but the studio cards at the front reveal where you’re getting your copies… with the problem with Neverending story… I’m just saying be careful.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Just go for all of them! He’s yet to miss as far as I’m concerned. Maybe leave off “Barking Dogs Never Bite” though, not because it isn’t also enjoyable, but the central gag does rely on an understandably upsetting topic.

Jacob King

Okay, having watched the reaction I’d like to give my theory. When I first saw this movie I would have agreed that humanity is the problem, watching it in 2024 I’m more inclined to believe that closed loop systems are the problem. The train goes round in circles and the two old men think they can have control over every aspect of human life and existence by enacting a binary/dialectic but it’s all a lie. The true hero of the movie, Nam, sees beyond the parameters of the system. If the polar bear survived then seals or elk or something also survived, if seals survived fish survived, if herbivores survived then there are plants. If animals survived then people definitely survived. The train is pretty far north, like Bering Sea north, they are basically crossing Siberia and Northern Canada and telling people on the train that this is what the world is like. The polar bear is a reference to Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth and the meme that polar bears are dying out. It’s a hopeful image. There are strong narrative parallels to The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas and I think the ending should be read the same way. We don’t know where the kids are going but it doesn’t have to be worse than the train.

George Amberson

Love this movie, am just getting ready to watch your reactions. Fingers crossed you…enjoy, I guess…it. If you don’t, I understand. If you do, my admiration and respect for you only increases (not that that means anything to you). Cheers!

JoeySnowyNoey

Wait I’m confused. Maybe I should watch the reaction but I know what this movie is about. It’s about how fucked up capitalism is. The train represents different classes of people and Chris Evan’s knowing how fucked this is radicalized and then decides to fight the system which isn’t fucking easy which is represented in the movie. And they’re a ton of other little things that represent other things but I’d have to see the movie again to point them out. Sorry if I’m talking out of my ass if they discussed this I just was shook because I thought the message of this movie is pretty clear and cut. Not a lot of room for interpretation if you ask me.

schnoobs

John hurt is also in Hellboy by dir. Guillermo Del Toro a movie which i would love to see you guys cover.

FranciscoGios

When I first watched it, in the end I felt the good side of humanity won because the first mistakes this “self-made” leaders Wilford & Gillian made from the beginning from this were to separate people into groups. You can tell this two leaders weren’t big fans of History, making Humans feel different against each other is not a good start.

Philipp Roensch

For me, the movie has always been about a doomed, circular logic for humanities end and that someone has to break that cycle. Literal cycle interpretation is also close by, because they are driving in a circle. The movie also saying that an uncertain end is better than this very predetermined future a 'tech guy' has thought of. I think the movie suffers from a few illogical contradictions, but the mad dark vision and world building from the comic is clearly in there and I love it.

Jonas Buckner

The TV show would be a fun watchalong. You have to get used to the changes from the movie, but once you do, it's pretty great in its own rightl

YukoValis

So do me a favor. Pull your shirt up over your head and try to see through the fabric. : ) You can clearly see through a single sheet of fabric, so those people weren't blind at all.

Alex Ch

Given that Gilliam didn’t tell Wilford about the fire, and did tell Curtis not to listen to a word Wilford said, Gilliam was likely playing a more complex game than Wilford let on. Enjoyed the reaction, looking forward to Parasite cracking the rotation at some point!
