Oh wowwww. Darn I need to go to work 🙄🙄🙄

dieselbeast

fudggee such a long ass film lol I mean short answer is it worth it? sure yes but dang its so long lol

E. D.

Like this comment if you want that George babysits a cute cat again.

ChickensAreRacist

Excited for y’all’s reaction but perhaps more so just to see this movie again. I gotta hear that music with that sunrise.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Man glad you got onto this one. David Lean influenced everyone from Peter Jackson and Christopher Nolan all the way to Scorsese and John Woo. The studio even made a special lens for the mirage shot of Omar Sharif appearing from about a quarter of a mile away. They even named the BAFTA Director award after Lean before changing it to a standard award name a little while back. Also highly recommend Doctor Zhivago by him 😊

Den Radar Ryan

My 5th Grade teacher made my class watch this in class back in Fall 1989 here in Nova Scotia. A month later we watched 'Ben Hur' (1959), too! Good times! Lol 👀📺📼

JediLounger

Damn I got class in 2 hours, and I will need a nap when I get home. Guess I know what I am doing tonight. So this is the second movie in David Lean's Epic Hollywood Trilogy. The other two movies are The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and Doctor Zhivago (1965). Both are well worth your time. All of Lean's films are great, but these three are next level in terms of scope and production value.

Patrick Egan

My dad took me to see this movie in 1989 after it was restored and brought back to theaters for a limited run. We saw it at an old movie palace in Honolulu on 70mm and it was INCREDIBLE.

Christopher Feiertag

Great watch-along as always. As was already mentioned in the comments, there are 2 more David Lean-masterpieces that you should experience: „Doctor Zhivago“ and „The Bridge on the River Kwai“ (my personal favorite of him, by the way)

Vellu

Random recommendation from the 60's: The Great Race (Blake Edwards 1965) starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and that Columbo guy

Logan Kerlee

I am SO DAMN THRILLED that you both watched this on here!!! Thank you for checking this one out. :D

Physics, in reply to the question about black clothes. Color has surprisingly little to do with how hot it gets beneath your clothing, at least when you put on various layers - which is what nomadic people like Bedouins would often do. For conventional clothing interfacing directly between the air and your skin, you will definitely feel a difference, both in terms of how quickly either heat up and how hot it gets during intermittent electromagnetic radiation (i.e. the Sun grilling you). With dresses and undergarments, you basically get some nice air circulation, or, with multiple layers (not necessarily the desert nomad way but still), you can get multiple insulating tiers - which is exactly what's so great about air in general; think styrofoam and how it traps tiny bubbles of air throughout the material in a stable configuration. With proper materials, conduction and convection do the rest and transport away the heat before the person beneath can turn into a baked potato, add to that convective phenomena ("chimney effect") and the color ends up being somewhat negligible. Basically, you can make a fashion statement without getting quite cooked. - dark color absorbs a broader spectrum of light and thus more energy - insulation is the most important thing, both in cold and warm weather. onion principle and all that - textile properties are obviously important; cotton for example is good for that very purpose, insulating while dry and being able to wick away sweat for evaporative cooling. Wool is great for not feeling like it's wet, also with a bunch of air trapped inside allowing for these insulating properties to take effect. - technically, darker colors can (don't have to) radiate away heat more quickly, so if you want to cool down in the shade here and there, it might be the meta to go with... if only for personal preference's sake - dirt and smudges on white clothing might still be something you'd might to avoid, I suppose, and running water isn't really a thing in the middle of steppes, deserts And if all that fails: people just assume that you are way too hard and show you respect for going with the option that might seem torturous. That or status.

George, if you want to check out something interesting from Peter O'Toole, look on Youtube for 'Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell'. It's a recording of a stage show he did in later life about an alcoholic, gambling-addicted journalist who gets accidentally locked in a pub overnight and spends all night remembering the weirdos he's met. Very funny and occasionally poignant. Maybe not one for the channel but worth a few hours.

Jay Davis

When watching a 4 hour movie, the trick is not minding.

AstralCars

I’m not a huge fan of David Lean but Brief Encounter (1945) is a banger

Cincassette

Oh can’t wait to watch this tonight!! On another note, i just watched “Past Lives” this week, and i think it would be an excellent film for the channel. It’s an incredibly beautiful and well made movie, and was even Oscar nominated this year. I can see Simone and George having interesting takeaways and thoughts on it.

ChickensAreRacist

Proud of you guys showing objectivity in admitting some of it has a bigger production value(?) than LOTR. Signed, a lover of LOTR.

Smooticus

David Lean's movies are perfect for winter. Wrap up in a blanket with the popcorn and snacks and lose yourself for the next 3 or 4 hours

Smooticus

Many of today's directors can learn a lot from David Lean. He could set up movie's setting (time, place, plot) in just 5 minutes of only cinematography what directors now take 25 minutes of exposition to do (best example is Bridge on the River Kwai)

China Andronicus

This is my second favorite film of all time. The real Lawrence was a fascinating man who also had a great sense of humor. His novels make for wonderful reads. If you’d like another fantastic Peter O’Toole performance, check out the Lion In Winter. It also stars Katherine Hepburn and was the first film of both Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton. Fantastic dialogue and you will see a much louder O’Toole. 😂

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

I am also something of a contrarian when it comes to David Lean. While I can admit to the legacy and popularity of his “epics” era, “The Bridge On the River Kwai” is usually the only one I revisit often. His earlier films are the real gems for me.

Logan Kerlee

lmao, I'm so damn thrilled that you're both FINALLY watching this. This is an AMAZING film. I first watched this like nearly 20 years ago with my dad. I was ENTHRALLED back then. Hell yeah!! You're both in for a treat with this film! :) lmao, "Are you seeing nothing?" xDD hahahahaha, good introduction to classic film, right here! Starting off with the BEST! xD It's okay George! Sorry that you aren't feeling well, buddy. I AM SO THRILLED THAT YOU'RE WATCHING THIS! xD lmao, nahh this movie ain't that old. It's set during World War I, I believe. Watching this movie is a something like a Christmas treat, for me. I really admire how you said that was a cool cut, George. :) I think that this was filmed on location but I"m not certain. Camels are way more cool than horses. They may not be as fast but they can walk and walk AND WALK!! "What's faster a horse or a camel? Originally Answered: Which of this animal is faster camel or horse? A racehorse can run faster… full-out at 44mph for about a quarter mile. A camel, 40mph in a short sprint but that same camel can run at 25mph for an hour." Lawrence is the most soft spoken man that I can remember on film. I'm pretty sure that the gun was intended as a gift and nothing more. (I don't think that's right Simone but I could be wrong. I believe that horses are quicker than camels. Ah! I was right! :) ) I don't think that this is cryptic at all. This movie simply isn't holding your hand. This movie does an amazing job at illustrating scale to the viewer. This entire film is a treat for the viewer. It's beautifully shot and directed as well as played. Alec Guinness is a phenomenal actor. xD This is filmed on location, all of it. I'd like a Dune reference or two, please! Come on, guys. Lawrence goes hard. "I will wake you." lmao, then he conks out. xD Lawrence does keep a very close shave. Filming for this took place in Jordan and Syria, at Jafir in Jordan. MANY films took inspiration from this. AH! Dune was finally mentioned! PogChamp Thanks for that George. xD hahahaha I love that this film includes an intermission. If either of you are concerned that this reaction won't be entertaining, rest assured - this will likely rank high for me among your reactions. Granted, a lot of that is that I feel this film is amazing but I'm very entertained by your reactions! I love seeing your takes on everything. :) It really brings a smile to my face! George! What did Denny's ever do to you? :P Lawrence is not a humble man. I LOVE the score of this film so damn much! It's thrilling and ever present. This film's PACKED with amazing lines. Everything said is meaningful. RIP Farraj- one of the most sad moments in this film. Lawrence took that beating, that abuse and did so without shouting or exclaiming. I'm not certain that he was SA'd but it's certainly possible. The amount of work put into making this film is unreal. Lawrence is a humane soldier. He loves his men and cares about his enemy. He'll kill but he'll also take pity on his foe. All of that ended in that slaughter. He became the monster that he swore against for so long. I'm VERY happy to have watched this with you both. :D Watching this is a badge of honor.

Logan Kerlee

BIG agreed on this! Simone and George both value and respect Lord of the Rings but know that it isn't the absolute top notch in that regard. I appreciate the respect given to and for this film.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Great choice! Saw that years ago when I was on an Anthony Hopkins binge, if I remember right it was his first film role. Not talked about enough when discussing older flicks.

Logan Kerlee

The score for this film is AMAZING! I have a hard time thinking of another with such great feeling and emotion behind it.

Logan Kerlee

I honestly don't think that I'd of had the ability to watch this while I was in the 5th grade. I'd of become easily distracted and lost the plot. Plus a film of this length back then - I'd of made SO MANY bathroom breaks. xD Hell, I had to make two during this watchalong.

Patrick Egan

Now we just need Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments :)

Odd Thomas

One of those films I respect from a filmmaking perspective but don't particularly *like*. Now you should watch Prometheus for a link I won't spoil.

mky

David Lean's classic desert epic always makes me thirsty.

David N

I appreciate the amount of camel love in this reaction.

REDR58

All the Presidents Men next for a reaction! ;) (For those wondering, there is an important line in this movie that also appears in ATPM.)

Odd Thomas

"I've never felt the sun to be so sinister" - you need to watch Sunshine (2007)!

NotlobParrot

Prince Faisal is wonderful, but if you want to see Alec Guinness REALLY blow your mind, watch "Kind Hearts and Coronets" (1949). The finest One-Actor-Playing-Multiple-Roles performance EVER. Freakin' hilarious. I dare you to read the plot summary and not want to watch it.

JLee

AHHH I'm glad y'all found some appreciation for this film.I love it so much. I've recommended The Cine-Files Podcast before but the episodes on Lawrence of Arabia are top notch. Also so glad Simone finally recognized Claude Rains as Captain Louis from Casablanca. edit: Major shout out to Editor Anne V. Coates for 4 hours of perfect cuts.

Brant

I know this was recorded a while ago, but you should check out Prometheus (2012) while this is still relatively fresh in your mind.

Michael LaPorte

The guinea had gone out of mint a long time before the war, but 150 guineas around 1910 would be a little shy of £16000 today.

Haye Zeus

And I thought Rocky 3 was homoerotic. This one is on an epic scale. :P I actually appreciate this movie more than I like it. I have a soft spot for big ambitious hollywood epics. So I enjoy the spectacle moreso than anything. Ben Hur and Ten Commanments have great spectacle and I feel more enjoyable storie imo.

Purple Dragon Knight

The man who was so happy to shake Lawrence's hand just so he could say he had done it and then defended him at his funeral was the same man who slapped him in anger at the Turkish hospital.

djKENTO

Funny that George mentions that Peter O’Toole looks like Michael Fassbender. Fassbender is in the movie Prometheus, the prequel to Alien and in that movie he bases his look and performance on this film…

REDR58

Anthony Quayle (Brighton) and Anthony Quinn (Auda Abu Tayi) previously appeared together in 1961’s “The Guns of Navarone.” Quinn was born in Mexico and portrayed a Greek partisan in “TGoN” (which you guys might also enjoy watching). It also has an intermission!

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Freddie Young (cinematographer) and Maurice Jarre (composer) who usually worked with Lean were a terrific creative triumvirate that complemented each other so well. Reminds me of Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu working with Emmanuel Lubezki; or Nolan with Hoyte Van Hoytema and Hans Zimmer. Stick with those who bring out the best in the others’ areas pretty much :)

Ph4ZeD

Yeah it’s a bit of a shame they haven’t done Alien 3 or Prometheus yet because they are worth a watch even if they aren’t perfect

Smooticus

I had totally forgotten about the special lens. I now wonder if this inspired Kubrick to use the Zeiss lens that was originally made for NASA in Barry Lyndon

Monica Alarcon

You know another great movie with Omar Shariff? Top Secret...

Haye Zeus

That’s where I known him from. Like I knew the name but I had forgotten what else I had seen him in. Yes Top Secret is the shit.

simon brouillard

That episode of the cine-files is awesome, well those episodes. Also fun fact, the Turkish general that cough is José Ferrer, the father of Miguel Ferrer who is in the greatest scene in Robocop “bitches leaves”.

simon brouillard

Great episode, that movie is so beautiful. Close encounter of the third kind 🙂

djKENTO

3 BODY PROBLEM!!! I need this reaction asap. It’s so good and I think George is gonna lose it over it.

Hussain Rumaih

It's so funny seeing your reactions to the desert and how impressed you guys were by sand, having been covered with sand for a long time in my life being from there and how dry and hot I felt watching this movie with you guys lol.

Angela D. Mitchell

This is such a complex movie -- I would agree that Lawrence was a different man to each person he met. Also, I agree with Simone on the hotness of Omar Sharif in this. What a beautiful man.

Moon Logic

I've been to both Sinai and Wadi Rum. Awe-inspiring! Got some photos on my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/biggertheyfall/ When you say the king of Jordan exists because of this movie, that is right in more ways than one. Jordan exists because of the treaty made between the French and British after Lawrence helped liberate Arabia.
