To answer the question - the relation between the book and movie is nonexistence. There are the 3 Laws in both, but other than that, the only similarity is the title.

Alec Miller

Am I the only one who says “Dammit George” when he guesses the ending. Great reaction. This isn’t the greatest movie of all time, but I’ve always had fun with it

miniature

but not when Simone guesses right? lol. the funny thing is though when either of them guess correctly, they dont know theyre right so half the time they talk themselves out of it or dismisses it. but tbf this movie while entertaining as a popcorn flick, it aint exactly some deep thinker, its pretty predictable.

In regards to the bad ai comment, please watch Her 2013

I love Asimov and the I, Robot books, and subsequent Foundation books, I was really disappointed this movie really stole the title. The Foundation series on HBO, while changing some significant parts to that series, is a much more loyal translation to the screen. Enjoyed the reaction though!

“They’re demolishing his house a day after he died? That’s suspicious” You should watch some 9/11 conspiracy documentaries 😉

😂 I'm sorry for anyone who reads this, I'm writing this while on a train to a rugby match and I'm just being stupid lol"

I really enjoy this film, and I say that as an Asimov fan too. A lot of people get annoyed that it goes down the 'bad robot' route, when Asimov's main thing was robots are not inherently good or bad but tools with safeguards built in (hence the laws). Yes it's a bit gung-ho on the violence, but I think the logic is basically sound behind why it happens, and even a lot of Asimovs stories deal with unintended consequences of the 3 laws. The books also have robots grappling with how to deal with conflicts around protecting humanity vs the individual, once robots have grown powerful enough to make decisions which could impact on the progress of humanity as a whole. And this is a very similar concept to the film. So I think it's more faithful to the spirit of Asimov than many give it credit for.

It's already been pointed out, but this has almost no relation to the original book "I, Robot", which was a collection of short stories. This started as a completely unrelated script titled "Hardwired", and then they changed the title and added some tiny elements from Asimov's works to give it a publicity bump. The main theme here is actually directly antithetical to the themes of Asimov's Robot stories. Isaac Asimov hated the prevalence of "Robot uprising" stories in early 20th century sci-fi and deliberately wrote a series that explored the way that safety procedures and good engineering practices would PREVENT such an event. That's what the Three Laws did. Most of the short stories were about the staff of US Robots investigating why a robot is behaving oddly in specific circumstances, and figuring out what THE HUMANS DID to cause this. Essentially a bunch of Workplace Safety Violations Investigations. Susan Calvin herself was a no-nonsense robot psychologist. She gave cold, solidly pragmatic advice, including immediately recommending that an entire shipment of robots be destroyed as soon as she learned that one malfunctioning robot was hidden among them (Unlike her panicked "Don't hurt them!" here when Spooner is shooting robots one at a time looking for Sonny). When Asimov did explore "What if the robots decided to take over for our Own Good?" he argued that to reach that philosophical point they would need to be advanced enough to recognize that slavery and oppression were a harm of their own sort and therefor an uprising would be self-defeating. So those robots would engage solely in behind-the-scenes management of human society to end poverty and war and racism through guidance of the planet. I don't like to use "spinning in their grave" a lot, but I think he would have hated this movie for using his name to make a story directly opposed to his entire body of work. It's not that the movie is bad in and of itself, but it's not HIS story. I heavily recommend reading the original short stories, and then the rest of the Robot novels. "The Caves of Steel" is a MASSIVE influence on cyberpunk, and also the originator of the Androids and Detectives genre.

George and Simone, watching the original matrix trilogy and following them with the Animatrix is a must

After Ex Machina and I,Robot, definitely consider putting Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence. It’s such a remarkable movie that was way ahead of its time and is much more endearing and melancholic.

Ludovic Ligot

A.I. is a great movie, for sure ! A unique blending of Kubrick and Spielberg. Incredibly emotional too...

Tim T—

Asimov couldn't write characters for his life. But I still think that Dr. Susan Calvin is one of the greatest SciFi-Characters of the Golden Age.

Green45

Her is one of the best AI movies. Spike Jonze went super personal in a reply to Lost in Translation

Jeff K

I mean, I've never seen the movie myself and have heard it's terrible, but if they want to find more AI-themed movies... they HAVE to watch S1M0NE with Al Pacino, right?

KillaB

New subscriber. Love you guys. Have you ever seen King of New York? Christopher Walken, Wesly Snipes, Lawrence Fishburne, David Caruso and Giancarlo Esposito. Classic!

Wrencher86

Not related to this reaction but: I'm sure you guys are probably waiting to see Dune 2 in order to do a reaction for the channel. But I would like to encourage you to be selfish(?) in this regard and go see it in theater if you have the opportunity. It's *STUNNING* on the big screen.

Sean Hennessy

Great old school movie that I see as a "precursor" to this movie to check out is short circuit.

Josh Greiner

Fun fact: the Spanish language version of this movie is called "Yo, Robot"

Thomas Larsen

I was thinking this just the other day, and double now after that intro. I love how much that movie makes me feel things.

Kyle King

I think a great follow up to this movie is Bicentennial man. And on top of that, has Robin Williams!

Christopher Johnson

"Based off Isaac Asimov's book" hurts me a little bit. The Robot Series and Foundation series are my favorite sci fi books of all time. I think this movie is entertaining as an action movie with sci fi elements but it is not a good representation of the book(s).

Lucifer Moon

please please watch Bicentennial Man
