Late Kate

Excited to watch and stop before the last 5 minutes.

Sweet!

Reed James

It such a great movie and then it gets weird at the end. But until then, it's really great.

Okay here’s how the Cloverfield franchise works… The first movie was a a huge viral success. Its trailer came out of nowhere and didn’t have a title, just a date. It had a GIANT online game component involving a bunch of JJ Abrams/Bad Robot memes and inside gags like Slusho which is part of all his films including his Star Trek reboot and Super 8 (it’s just a 7Eleven Slurpee knock off). So then this movie gets made and it has NOTHING to do with Cloverfield but Bad Robot decided to kind of make a Cloverfield brand where if a movie had Cloverfield in the title you knew it’d be a fun Bad Robot sci-fi showcase for smaller and younger directors. AND THEN THEY FUCKED IT UP! It’s February 4th 2018 and everyone is hanging out with their friends and family watching the big game… and then THERE’S A TRAILER FOR THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX AND IT’S ON NETFLIX RIGHT AFTER THE GAME!? WILD! And then a bunch of us nerds all went and watched that shit after the game and it sucked. It ruined the good name of the Cloverfield brand forever by taking a pretty bad sci-fi movie that had been bouncing around Paramount and then crammed a bunch of crap to try and make all the cloverfield films connected. I won’t say how. It’s dumb tho. So then another movie that was intended to be CLOVERFIELD OVERLORD dropped the cloverfield label and just became OVERLORD… which is a movie you should ABSOLUTELY watch. So yeah this is part of a trilogy or whatever… but none of these films were intended to be. They were all made as one thing and then JJ Abrams went and JJ Abrams’d all over the brand. I mean there’s a reason the 3rd one went straight to Netflix and was launched without basically ANYONE IN THE WORLD knowing about it even with its cast and production company and the brand name.

No One Will Save You is another great invasion flick

At a certain age, say 65, men in the UK only wear grey and beige clothing. It's like a rule.

Everyone is always dissing the ending, but I really like it! The movie kept me switching thoughts - whether it WAS an apocalypse out there or whether the only thing going on was an abduction. The truth just kept getting worse. If she had overcome the abduction, she would have only addressed half of the movie. I love that it's BOTH, and she's so badass she overcomes BOTH halves of the story. And the truth just kept getting worse. In my opinion, if there had been no alien invasion ending, this would be a slightly above average abduction thriller. Instead, with the ending it does have, there's no other movie like it - that are both simultaneously sci fi AND abduction thriller. Anyways, personally, this is one of my all-time favourites, so excited to see you guys reacting to it!

Anthony Villena

I read this book called The Secret Lives of Color, by Kassia St Clair, that talks a lot about the things you mentioned. One thing that I hadn't realized before is how hard/impossible it for the average human to see certain colors, even as recent as a few hundred years ago. Some colors could only be made from a certain insect or plant or something, so if those weren't nearby or transported via trade route then you might never see them.

Jacob King

I enjoyed Paradox based on having no expectations. If it was just a Netflix SF thriller it’d be just above average. Similar level to that vampire on a plane movie. I definitely agree the branding was a mistake but also they didn’t really have a plan about what constitutes a Cloverfield movie versus any other Bad Robot production. I’ll definitely check out Overlord which I must have missed entirely.

I'm old enough to remember when pink was yellow

To answer the "why spaceships" question - it's complicated, there's more to this story that you're not aware of. On the Molotov, I mean if you swallowed one you'd die too, IDK that it's necessarily that weird. More interesting is there's a huge disagreement over is A Quiet Place was originally written to be in this universe then split off into its own thing. Sometimes people who are known for playing comedic characters can be the most menacing, Craig Robinson did this once which I won't spoil in case you react to that thing some day and he was really scary. Actually this movie isn't all that controversial - The Cloverfield Paradox is much more so. IDK, there's a bunch of ways of looking at the franchise, one of them is as a funding vehicle for movies that otherwise probably wouldn't get made, and maybe that's valid and maybe there's nothing wrong with that - but if that's the thing you have to tie it all together; every time we get more lore about the universe and maybe some day it'll all be tied together. All I know is there's a fourth one coming and there's a bunch o' hype about it.

miniature

lmao how is a human swallowing a Molotov in anyway comparable to a spaceship?? just scale and size a lone, it would be more like a human swallowing a lit match. it would hurt and cause injuries but it wouldnt kill you. thats not to mention a space ship isnt a living being.. throwing a molotov on a commercial plane wouldnt cause it to explode immediately, theres fire suppression systems and you know, crew, to try to put it out. why an advance space ship have none of that?

Garin

*Woman shows up disfigured with her skin peeling off her face* George: The air is fine, she's probably just a crackhead 😂

Nathan Swapp

George didn't like it because he wanted to be right. Howard can be crazy and right.

droodly

When I first saw this I was kinda in the same mind-set as you two. I was excited when she escaped and it turned out there was an actual alien apocalypse thing happening, but very confused as to why it wasn't more "cloverfield" monsters. Knowing it's coming made it less of an annoyance because I knew I would still enjoy the first 90ish % a lot. But, like you said it seems like it would have been more satisfying if they showed the big monster from the first one on the horizon or even a bunch of the little "arglebargle" creatures running out of the field after her car when she gets away. It was a weird choice to do it how they did.

miniature

THATS what you took from the 10+ minutes of discussion they had? seems needlessly rude and dismissive, as if you were expecting them to 100% agree with you on every point, and the first thing one of them said that you dont agree with, you latched on to that and ignored anything and all else and took it personally.

olly.enn

I feel like they're spoiling themselves a bit from time to time by researching the cast so thoroughly ... :-| (edit: Then again, I cover my eyes and mumble "lalalala" during some trailers in the movie theater. so... well.)

JayF

I agree about the ending being over the top. I don't feel like you do where you said it should have ended when she saw the birds. I still like the twist that Goodman's character was right. I'd have just ended it with her getting killed by a monster just after seeing the birds.

Gwyn

I like that he was right, it is more fun than if he was just lying

Skylar Burns

This isn't in the same World as Cloverfield. Only in the sense thematically speaking. Like Black Mirror episodes.

Kinokind

Although the ending did feel tacked on, I'm not offended by it. I, too, think it's more interesting that Howard is both crazy and right. Otherwise, her going to the trouble of making the cool spacesuit was pointless! And they tried to show character growth by her choosing to head for the battle rather than safety.

megamoo chilli

The massive tonal shift after she gets out of the bunker turned me off on first viewing. But seeing it now again I love it. I think the power of the character performances outshines the big flashy sensational monster ending.

Molecule

I mean I can't be the only one who saw that the gas was flammable right?

Tangerra

From my understanding the thematic idea of the monsters being different is that Cloverfield was meant to be an anthology series bridged by concept monster movies. I do like anthologies though, so maybe it’s wishful thinking.

sarCC

Yay! I thoroughly love this movie.

VinnyAhhh

I might be in the minority but I really liked the ending — particularly because the whole "oh the main character was just gaslit into think there's an invasion" is just too obvious. This movie plays on the fact that we, as a movie-going audience, assume that it's *either* Howard is a monster *or* he's protecting them from an enemy invasion. The majority of the movie is getting the audience to bounce back and forth in their assumption; one moment you think oh it's just Howard gaslighting the other characters and then the next you think oh he's just a weird prepper who did actually save their lives. The one scenario that the audience wouldn't assume is that *both* theories could be true at the same time. The final moments of this movie are also necessary because it's a payoff of all the growth Michelle goes through the entire movie. The movie starts with her deciding to run away from her relationship instead of taking action and figuring it out but ends with her making the decision to go to Houston to fight instead of Baton Rouge to run away.

Crazykirsch

Gotta echo the common sentiment that the ending really soured this one for me. I don't know if it was actually mandated or Director's choice, but the action scene at the end of this feels like the most "studio mandated" scene I've EVER witnessed in a movie. If it had simply ended with her escaping to an ambiguous fate this might have been a top 10 movie for me. Barring that at the very least they could have done without the wildly tonally innapropriate action stuff and just shown the state of the world/distant creatures or something. Hell they could have done something similar to The Mist and that would be have 10x preferable to what we got.

Odd Thomas

Dan Trachtenberg also directed one of the best Black Mirror episodes (I won't spoil which). For more Mary Elisabeth Winstead I would suggest Tarantino's Death Proof.

JoeE

Creepiest part 4 me was him showing up clean shaven, like he’s ready 4 date night

pedantech

When I first watched this movie, somehow I didn't make the connection between this movie and the first until several hours after watching this one. I was certain that there was nothing outside the bunker. If there was something out there, I never would have expected aliens. I think this made a great movie so much better. That disjointed feeling some are complaining about really works for me. After her escape from the bunker, it quickly goes from relief at the end of a tiny claustrophobic hell to terror of a world wide agoraphobic hell. It takes it to a whole new level.

Cincassette

You should watch the movie "True Stories" made by David Byrne of Talking Heads fame. It will make you see John Goodman as a lovely, likeable teddy bear of a man again :D

DM DC

I liked how it ended. Here's the thing. With it just being a kidnapping movie, it would have been fine. But when you add it to the same universe as the Cloverfield monster at least for me; it makes it much more interesting. Espessically with; like Simone said, when Howard is shown to be partially right that it's an attack. This gives it more depth than him JUST being crazy. Yes he was crazy but that's what makes it good. The way you talk about it makes it sound like there can't be crazy people amidst an alien attack. The woman trying to get in was clearly sick and/or burned. Not just bad skin. She was also frantic this combined with the sounds they heard especially in that one scene when Howard is talking about the tactics of the attack waves for me helps tie the whole movie together. And again just makes it that much more interesting that he may have been correct about the attack and then proven right at the end there. But he was still a crazy person in that he kidnapped women. This is something he had been doing for years though as stated and possibly longer than that. This though helps make the world more "lived in" with things, even bad ones still happening despite the fact that there would eventually be an invasion. As for the ship being taken down, here's a few things to note. One the ship is a biomechanical thing. It's not just a ship it's a living creature which I don't know about you but I feel a molotov cocktail is going to bring a number of things that swollow it down. Second, it obviously had a storage of that gas inside it, which the flames of the molotov cocktail likely ignited which would create the explosion within it bringing it down. Another thing I think this movie does and does well is show that an invasion doesn't have to be from just one source. The fact that we have different creatures from the Cloverfield monster but is still considered to be in the same universe and I think around the same time as the New York attack I can't recall, but it does add to the danger overall. Plus we still don't know much about this alien race that is invading. Maybe they created or grew the cloverfield monster for this purpose but only had one on hand? Not entierly sure but either way I found this movie to be a refreshing take on an alien invasion flick. It also shows that no matter what sort of monsters invade earth we'll still have our own monsters lurking around. It also makes the tagline make much, much more sense cause we have Howard, then the creature chasing Michelle, then the ship monster, and then since this is in the verse of the frist Cloverfield movie we also have the giant kaiju monster; we have the many different forms. Also not sure how you came to feel it was disjointed since they did elude to the alien attack through out the film. I thought it fit right with the overall flim. Also, I almost forgot, for the ending another reason I liked it was it concluded Michelle's arch. Without it the story she told Emmett would have been pointless. In the end at that sign she is now chosing not to run anymore, now she's going to fight. This gives her more character development. Otherwise what would have been the point of adding that scene with her story about running away? Honestly if you take out the alien invasion to this film I feel it would have been very mediocre. While the beginning and middle would have been really good, an ending with her just leaving would have sullied the whole fim and made it kinda lame. I think the makers of this film need to be commended for making a movie with such a different take on an alien invasion movie. That would be my thoughts on it.

Our Patrons thought we were a myth. Well... They were MYTH taken.

🖤This is why I wear mostly black (the majority of the jeans I wear are blue, but some black pairs, but you know like shirts, socks, undies, hats, sweaters, ect), and I'll just buy black clothing and black colored themed toys for my kids for when I have kids. We won't be a family where we use colors to enforce gender norms or wear the "opposite" colors to enforce how gender norms are dumb (they are)... we're going to wear colors based on how we're a family that's dead inside XD Also George... the pink shirt and ESPECIALLY the steamed hams shirt (I assume its the yellow shirt) please don't stop wearing it because of the phobes. If we don't get our steamed hams references it's another battle they win LOL.

Our Patrons thought we were a myth. Well... They were MYTH taken.

🖤Regarding this movie being a sequel, not a sequel thing. It IS a sequel but think of the movies as an anthology series like Black Mirror. Only these movies are somewhat connected. You'd have to watch the next one "The Cloverfield Paradox" to understand the connection. I liked The "Cloverfield Paradox" good enough to recommend it for a watch since you're two movies deep in the franchise. It's OK. Visually cool, very weird at times. Not the strongest of the trilogy tho. But still interesting. But again, its the movie that makes sense of all this, and then there will be a 4th Cloverfield movie coming eventually so I'd recommend you watch it for several reasons :)

Mark Messer

The movie tires to be War of the Worlds in the last 5 minutes

Ricardo Alanis

Can’t take away how great the performances are. I actually think the best way to end the movie would be Michelle seeing the aliens, saying “Oh, come on!” and then cut to credits. Because then it shows ever so briefly that Howard was part right but without shifting the tone so much. Still a great watch. Another very good role for John Goodman is Red State by Kevin Smith.

Alexrandom

When I first saw this movie I had no idea it was set in the cloverfield universe. I just thought it had the word cloverfield in the title because, well, it's just a word :p So seeing it the first time I thought this really was about a guy lying (or not) to a girl and her trying to escape. When I saw the spaceship I lost my shit :') Seeing a movie blind is the best feeling ever. Even though I think the end of the film would have worked better without the action tone shift. After having watched it you can obviously see this wasn't supposed to be a cloverfield movie and the story just got rebranded but it's still a fun film. The next movie in the cloverfield universe isn't perfect by any means but it has a few good moments. I believe it's the same thing though. A sub-par scif-fi scenario rebranded to fit the cloverfield universe but still pretty decent.

FranciscoGios

I totally agree this movie should be by itself, or showing a big monster at the end to be more of a Cloverfield movie would make more sense. J.J Abrams is notoriously known to drastically change a lot in his stories or connect his projects into his other films[Im hoping this is his downfall and not make more films].

Shane Driscoll

Honestly, I would have even preferred if it had ended with Michelle walking into the blinding sunlight and we never see what's outside. Tasha Robinson wrote a pretty interesting piece where she defends the ending because she thought it did a good job of showing just how unfamiliar and surreal the world can feel right after you get out of an abusive relationship. It's an intriguing interpretation, but I don't think that was the intention. And even if it was, the film completely bungled the execution. Anyways, I'll toss another shovelful on the towering heap of film recommendations and say you should definitely check out Cube directed by Vincenzo Natali. It has a lot of similar elements to this film, but it does a much better job of sticking the landing.

Chase Schleich

Agreed. He's a terrible director who somehow keeps getting huge jobs. How many bad films can he make before Hollywood executives finally realize he sucks? He got lucky, once, and he's worked steadily ever since.

Elvyn Colon Jr.

So to really explain the confusion of the tacked on ending, in which we see aliens invading Earth instead of the Cloverfield monster from the first movie. For one, The Cloverfield Paradox kinda explains it, but then again it just adds alot of more questions than alot of answers but I'll leave that up to if you guys are interested in finishing out this weird disconnected yet somewhat connected trilogy of Cloverfield movies lol. And two, there was a theory made by the Youtube channel "Inside A Mind" that explains that both Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane is connected via the fictional Japanese company, Tagruato, and the idea that these aliens had somehow planted the Cloverfield monster on Earth thousands and thousands of years ago and were monitoring it from the Black Knight satellite. 10 Cloverfield Lane really lays down a theeme of conspiracy theories, as coincidentally enough, the Black Knight satellite is a REAL conspiracy theory of aliens watching us from far across the galaxy. And supposedly, in this theory, when the government bombed and killed the baby Cloverfield monster, it made the aliens really upset to the point that sometime after the events of the first movie, they would come to Earth and have their revenge, which seems like it would probably be a little silly, but it was a very interesting theory to have as a definitive answer as to why it was an alien invasion at the end. Though now... The Cloverfield Paradox pretty much threw that theory out the window. But again, totally up to you guys if you want to see The Cloverfield Paradox at some point in the future. You will get answers, but will most likely be even more confused lol.

Logan Kerlee

Honestly I'd of liked your guy's ending quite a bit more! lol, oh well.

Allen Pass

I could not disagree more with George's reaction on this one.

Carl Tunney

And that Howard explained the foot soldier idea that the ending was showing! The spaceship and the little alien were the foot soldier to his conspiracy theory. I also like to think the aliens used the big cloverfield monster to start their invasion and were trying to mop up the small factions of humans! Still fun to me even with the guys giddiness at finding the little parts that didn’t match at the end.

Grinznmore

I like the ending. The machine acts as an exoskeleton designed to protect the creature's vulnerabilities, but the creature exposes itself. It's not unusual for something smaller to take down something much larger. I thought the ending gave Michelle a Sarah Connor persona.

miniature

theres not agreeing with someones opinion, and then theres just insulting someone. oh wait! youre that dude who got banned after insulting other patrons accusing them of making multiple accounts, only to return by making multiple accounts and pretending the other account was a "friend". lmao okay cool. good to know everything you say is invalid. seriously dude, why are you still here? lmao how pathetic is your life that you got banned only to go make another account and pay some more to stick around at a place where the owners dont want you here.

miniature

lmao this video more than others really highlights the 3 types of people on here. 1. people who agree with S&G 2. people who doesnt agree with S&G but are mature about it. 3. people who cant handle differing opinions.

Ed R

I like the ending. Otherwise its just a psycho kidnaping people. What it has to do with Cloverfield I don't know, marketing? Luckily I saw this movie before I saw Cloverfield so I wasn't tainted by trying to bridge the two movies. I still look at this movie as NOT a sequel to Cloverfield. which makes it much better. I also think its a better movie than Cloverfield.

miniature

hahaha i think you got it backwards there. the movie was originally meant to be just a psycho kidnapping people and has nothing to do with cloverfield. they forced the bridge and thats why its so disjointed. so you seeing it as NOT a sequel is kind of fitting in a way because its only a sequel via JJ forcing it to be one when it has no business being one.

REDR58

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is very good in this. If you forget that Cloverfield exists, or assume that the aliens in that movie were launched as some sort of biological weapon on the planet before arriving with the ships seen here (which is admittedly pointless because if you can get here from far away, you have the technology to launch weapons on the planet) the movie works fine, but yes, think it would be better if it just ended in the birds. Which is exactly how…ends. :) Anyway, watch “Room” from 2015 with Brie Larson. That’s a movie slightly like this that has some broad similarities which I think you two would enjoy more.

Ricardo Alanis

Oh, JJ Abrams’ lens flare is another filmmaker trademark move.

WastedPo

I'm astounded at the apparently high number of people who led you into thinking this was a sequel to the other movie and that it took place in the same world. That's simply not true. Even Abrams said this was a different universe. If one watches this constantly looking for how the movies link up, which is what you guys did, the story isn't given a chance to develop. It's actually unbelievable how much this experience was ruined for you. Literally every new scene you're saying with concrete surety that there is a monster roaming around outside and how John Goodman was correct. I wish you hadn't gone into this with so many preconceived notions. I have to think that affected how well (or not) the movie ultimately worked for you.

Jonas Buckner

I love this movie. I was not that into Cloverfield, but when this movie came out, I loved the idea of having a semi-shared universe in which you can tell multiple genres of movie. It should never be looked at as a sequel, but they were trying to build a world where any type of story can be told. The first one is a found-footage kaiju movie. The second is an abduction film. The third is a space horror film. Maybe the fourth could be a romcom. I don't think they communicated well what they were trying to do, and anyone expecting a direct beat-for-beat sequel will be disappointed.

Middy

The problem with ambiguous is it's 100% what most people would expect from a movie like this. That's boring. Him being SO right after everything that's happened is a "fuck you" to the audience of the Nth degree and I think we need more of that in cinema.

Christopher Runyon

George: I dunno, she could be a weird, messed up or druggy lady with bad skin. Me living on the Mississippi coast: Yup that tracks

Simone's Coconut Squire

I think it kind of makes an interesting foil to the first movie. The first movie is sort of "What if you get trapped in a disaster with the ideal companions (your friends)?" and the second is "What if you get trapped with the worst possible person?". Also the Slusho! connection between the films. I believe you see ads for this product in both movies (and pretty sure it shows up in the 3rd also).

Rileymetal

This movie without the last 15 minutes is a crippled movie.

Sckmnky

I actually think George would look really cool with a skirt or kilt thing.

Amelie W

Wow, people sold you on this as a "sequel" to Cloverfield? They'd have to have realized how much hopeless speculation it would lead to. I mean the movies are connected, slightly more than the Quake videogame series is connected, but in both cases it's more of a brand name than a sequential story or a common theme or anything.

Noel Valdez

It's funny that you talk about the mens clothes and women's clothes. As a shorter man I often find myself shopping in the women's section because mens clothes are often way too long!! Ill try on a medium shirt and it will go so down far me I hate it. So I will buy women's shirts sometimes because its often the same shirt and cut but its smaller or they have crop cuts that mens cuts don't have that look better on my shorter frame. Also, the hoodie discussion is cool because I have bought women's hoodies and jackets for the opposite reason George was saying they got the mens. I liked the tighter fit and crop cuts that women's hoodies and jackets often have. I honestly am on the team of stopping the gender stuff in stores and just sorting by styles and cuts. So whatever kind of cut or style you're going for you can just go to that section. No reason to gender something that should be universal. It's just shit to put on our bodies on the end of the day. I hate that high waisted jeans too is something that seems to only be in women's sections. I got some high waisted jeans as a dude and if you're shorter it can make you look taller then you are.
