This was one of the movies that I watched because I had heard the soundtrack and really liked lmao

A+ thumbnail!

Always thought Steve Carell was fantastic in this film, especially considering he wasn’t in many dramatic roles at all around this time. Definitely recommend Foxcatcher if you’re up for a sinister turn from him

Alan Arkin's performance in this reminds me: if you guys haven't seen Argo, you should definitely check it out. He's fantastic in that as well, and it's a great movie (even if it does dilute how crucial a role the Canadian government played in the real-life story).

I had the chance to attend a special screening at the Arclight when this came out. It had the directors and Abigail Breslin come out for 10-15 minutes after the movie to tell behind the scenes stories of the production. By all accounts, everyone had a good time making the film.

I’m trying to watch, on the sly at work, and Simone’s voice hitting me in just my left ear made me Chuck my phone! 😂

Alan Arkin beating out djimon & Eddie Murphy for the Oscar that year was an absolute travesty. Guess since they gave the Oscar to forest that year (deservedly so) they felt they hit their quota lol

Jeff K

Yeah, I love Alan Arkin but by this stage of his career, he was just playing Alan Arkin in every movie.

Maarten Martens

I knew this was gonna be a good reaction. Loved every moment of it.

A lot of people hate Richard for somewhat valid reasons. But he technically has suffered the most out of everyone. His dream is ruined, his wife wants a divorce, his son hates him, hes bankrupt and his father and only parent dies. Like ye hes not the best dad in the world and he tries to mask his pain with delusion and positivity but the guy has had it rough.

Adam K

Great movie, great reaction

i get what you mean, but i would say literally dying is losing the most lmao. but also, those things you listed as losses, are self inflicted. his son hates him because he doesnt listen and just tramples over other peoples difficulties with his own over the top barrage of "positivity". his wife wants to divorce him for the same reasons. the only thing i say isnt entirely self inflicted is his dream dying, but that also isnt exclusively just him. a lot of people loses their dreams and hope, even his son in this movie, except at least Richard got to give it a try first, where as his son gets it taken away from him before he even started.

The dad’s name is “Richard Hoover” and I would assume that naming your character “dick sucker” shows clear intent.

Dan Holmes

Saw this in theaters, one of my favorite experiences, the utter joy from the audience in the final scene when the whole family starts dancing is unmatched :)

Dan Holmes

As Good as it Gets should be your next Greg Kinnear film ;)

Chris Bowles

Without a doubt, one of my favorite thumbnails lmao

Simon Pegged Me

Really? I thought it was lazy, since George just posted a picture of himself from high school. And yes, I am joking. I loved the thumbnail.

In my opinion this film is exceptional for two things. Outstanding acting work by the entire cast. All 6 actors did an incredible job. For me, great acting is the ability to portray complex motivations or conflicting emotions. Every performance in this film shows people struggling with issues on many levels and one of those is trying to get along with the the other 5 characters on top of their personal struggle. Abigail Breslin is amazing and, unlike many of your commenters, Alan Arkin isn't actually a drug and sex addicted old man who appears to be the only person paying any attention to his granddaughter and she is the only person that's paying attention to him. Maybe that's why they both got Oscer nominations, and Alan Arkin obviously wone. The other thing remarkable about this film is the incredible visual storytelling particularly inside a moving vehicle. The shots the director and cameraman were able to get were amazing and never did you feel like you were watching camera work, you just saw the scene unfold. Also, good call George, spoting the van as a metaphor for the family.

Olive being left at the gas station and then having to jump aboard the moving van is basically the plot of "The Martian" without the science :-)
