That thumbnail might be the scariest thing I've ever seen.

THAT. THUMBNAIL. Y'all're going too far now Lmao

mojo shivers

The best Godzilla movie ever. I used to watch the classic films. While they were entertaining and fun, I don’t think any of them moved me like Minus One did. There’s an emotional center to the film that grounds it into being both a meditation on trauma and loss, as well as a pretty good love/family story. And there’s a rather impressive monster in it too.

PR3M3

Best thumbnail you've every had nothing comes close.

Carlos Hurtado

And I thought Simone De Niro was scary😱

Another awesome Godzilla movie is Shin Godzilla. It was another movie that treated the emergence of Godzilla as a first contact event. For "Big Monster Beat-Em-Up" action, Godzilla: King of the Monsters was a good film, though it gets a little farfetched, it's obviously more of a "we're having fun here, with the fights. The how and plot is how we explain the in-between". It's the sequel to the 2014 Godzilla you talked about in the trivia.

Magnificent Gojira

Answering your question, George: Japanese cinema largely avoided uncofortable questions of their country being agressors and numerous war crimes. There are lot of great WWII films were made in Japan and a lot of them are quite unsettling however the two main ways to deal with it were 'we were the victims of the Bomb' and "we were people like you only in the tough spot and dealing with inhuman orders from our commanders'. Both of course are true. And you can find masterpieces there like Kobayashi trilogy Human Condition (on how to stay a decent human being in all that hell) or cannibalism and survival (Ichikawa's Fire on the Plains) and even more critical films like Under the Flag of Rising Sun by Kinji Fukasaku. But you rarely find something like Caterpillar by Kôji Wakamatsu telling story about the 'war hero' returning home without arms and legs whose heroic actions in China were primarily of a serial rapist as it turns out.

I think the original japanese version of the first one (1954) is a good movie. If you didn't pay that much attention when you watched it the first time, George, there might be some merit in re-watching it now for the channel. I would avoid the American repackaging of the same movie that was release shortly after. It is a vastly inferior version of the original with added bits filmed with American actors, imho.

Phillyman!!

After seeing this movie I’ll never watch an American Godzilla movie again. Straight awesomeness this movie

E. D.

I wouldn‘t be scared of Simonzilla

The budget for Minus One was a reported $10-$12 million and became not only the first Godzilla movie to be nominated for an Academy Award (for best visual effects) but won the Oscar, beating out fellow nominee Gareth Edwards’ The Creator (who directed 2014 Godzilla). Director Takashi Yamazaki (who was also the visual effects supervisor for the film) now holds the unique record of standing alongside Stanley Kubrick of directors having won visual effects Oscars for their films (Kubrick won for 2001: A Space Odyssey). Definitely give the recent American monster verse movies a shot (starting from 2014 Godzilla all the way to the recent Godzilla X Kong). They’re not the same quality of Minus One but certainly made of replicating the Showa era of goofy Godzilla fighting monsters (and King Kong) that it’s popular enough to warrant a reaction series. If you do choose and if the voters wish for that.

Phillyman!!

And Simone you don’t need to watch anything else of Godzilla you just saw the best Godzilla imo. Can’t believe this had a 12 million dollar budget. Graphics are amazing 💯

Bookwormy

This was amazing. Such a great story. Amazing thumbnail, I laughed so hard.

Darin Foat

It was so cool when this won best visual effects at the Oscars. The team were all carrying little plastic Godzilla action figures when they came onstage to collect the award.

Smiffy

Good movie, but painfully overrated.

I've only seen a handful of Godzilla movies (1998's American version and the new Monsterverse) before watching Minus One this morning, I actually got this notification about 15 minutes into starting it, and I can't say any of the others matched this on an emotional level. I do enjoy the monster verse a good amount but it's just popcorn fun (which isn't a bad thing IMO) but this movie felt like it had real stakes and emotional weight.

Michael

Now that I know Simone hasn't seen any Godzilla and George only a few I require you guys to watch Shin Godzilla and then the Monsterverse which contains the following films: Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs Kong, and Godzilla x Kong: the New Empire. Do it!

Happy Hanukkah

Don't be ridiculous, Simone! Nobody is going to be mad at you for never having seen a Godzilla movie. Now, if you had said that the only Godzilla you had seen was the 1998 one, I would now be mystifiedly entering a barren smoldering wasteland. :-) I find myself wondering how the Gojira movies were and are perceived in China.

Wrencher86

I've likely become a little desensitized to George's thumbnail edits, but when I opened up the notification on this one I straight up chortled. Well done, George. I had a good time seeing this in theaters. The group I was with all agreed it was better than we were expecting. But the budget shows in some places (no recoil on the machine gun bothers me), the performances are a little dramatic at times (could be a cultural thing) and occasionally it's just a little goofy (Godzilla sinking and then turning off like a light bulb got a laugh out of my group). I don't think it rises to the hype around it but it's still a very enjoyable film that's hugely impressive, technically speaking, considering the budget.

One thing I wanted to point out is that in this film Godzilla is not a "rampaging mindless beast". He attacks them on Odo to begin with because they flash him in the eyes with a spotlight and then start shooting him, and then he just kills them to stop them from shooting him and doesn't eat them, he isn't hunting humans. He starts attacking boats because they nuked him at Bikini Atoll. Then when he is actually damaged by them attacking him directly (half his face is blown off, and he's shot point blank with multiple rounds from deck cannons) he decides to make a point and goes and F's up Ginza. Finally he comes back because they apparently didn't learn their lesson and start taunting him with his own voice. The doc says he would have returned within 10 days, but there's really absolutely no reason to assume he would have come back if humans had left him the F alone. I'd also like to know who's idea it was to start baiting him before the battleships and aircraft were in place ready to act? :D

So, the current Monsterverse is as follows: 1. Kong: Skull Island (set in the 70s) 2. Godzilla (2014) 3. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (tv series which jumps timelines between just after Skull Island and just after 2014 Godzilla) 4. Godzilla: King of Monsters 5. Godzilla vs Kong 6. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire The only one that I don't like and I'm in the minority here is the 2014 Godzilla that kicked off the monsterverse. It had the problem that George brought up with Planet of the apes in that it focuses on humans and you barely see Godzilla. Maybe 20 minutes of the movie if not less is actually about Godzilla.

sarCC

Oh, no, I think most people, especially Godzilla fans don't like the 2014 Godzilla. It gets points for not being as stupid, embarrassing, and having as awful effects as the 1998 Godzilla, but its focus on bland, uninteresting characters make it a chore to watch. Godzilla-1 shows you can focus on the human characters and make it interesting and moving when the writing and acting are done well. As for the other Monster-verse movies, I only also don't like the most recent 2. I don't HATE them, the fights are fun and captivating, but the human stuff is really dumb, bordering on insulting.

Monica Alarcon

George, you should make like a blog with all your thumbnails...

Jeff K

Is this where I sheepishly admit I have a soft spot for the 1998 one? While recognizing it’s a pretty terrible movie, of course.

David Nesbit

Thumbs up on “Tora Tora Tora”

Trevor Rotan

From what I understand about Japan’s position on the war, they deny the atrocities committed by Japan and you can’t tell the truth about their actions, and even intellectuals are exiled if they try to publish research about Japan’s actions during the war.

Dooly

Japan’s stance on their crimes in ww2 is ignore it completely. It never happened. Anyway, I personally dig the Shin Godzilla design. It’s like a cancerous mess of a monster with killer thighs.

michael tittel

Since it wasnt commented on during the scene or in the discussion I would just suggest to the both of you to rewatch the final hospital reunion bit, there might have been a signifcant detail you missed ;). As far as other Godzilla Movies go, apart from the Original only Shin Godzilla rivals this one. In my personal opinion, Minus One is the better movie, while Shin is the better -Godzilla- movie.

REDR58

Godzilla looked like a wind-up toy when he walked around. Very bizarre.

Tom M

I thought same as George re: Godzilla is so far out of the water. I guess his thicc ass is bouyant?

Jonas Gade

With Georges comment about personal feelings about the Japanese during/after ww2. Has there been any thoughs about watching something like "The Eight Hundred" or "Flowers of War"?

Mike FromOz

Simone: Woah, Godzilla is really scary! George: Look who's a chonky boi 🥰

Sevnthdragon

I like the American Godzilla (2014 and beyond) … mostly in that he moves terrestrially a bit more fluidly and his face is more animalistic.

Opti_Frog

Melodramatic and depressing Godzilla? Not for me, thanks. Also, i recommend everyone to read Sarah G. Vincent's review of Godzilla: Minus One.

Korpse

For those who grew up watching all the original Godzilla movies in black and white on vhs over and over again.... this movie deserves all the praises it gets 🤘

Turnt SNACO

Oh God, that thumbnail is cursed....

Adam Wetstein

I rarely have the patience to do the full watch along. But this was great experience as Listen to George’s Chinese take and how the pace of the movie never lags

Zinphad

For another take on the giant monster movie, you could check out Colossal (2017). Bonus, it has Jason Sudeikis.

Civil Hooligan

Please give Shin Godzilla(2016) a chance it's a great body horror take on Godzilla

ShoNuff3000

Origins and Symbolism: Godzilla was initially conceived as a metaphor for nuclear weapons and the devastation they cause, particularly reflecting the experiences of Japan during World War II and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Jon Johns

George! I watch an interview with the director just now, he mentioned one of his recent films (2013) called "Eternal Zero" in Japan, and "The Fighter pilot" in English & on IMDb. Tora Tora Tora is amazing, but I think Eternal Zero might also be an interesting film to watch about 'dovine wind' - I am currently trying to find it online to watch myself.
