They re-recorded with Scarlett late in the process.

Phillyman!!

I’ll never make fun if anyone fell in love with Scarlett’s voice lmaooo 😂😂

Phillyman!!

Dude TRUE! That accent 💯💯golden in Don Jon

Mike FromOz

A movie recommendation for more Scarlett Johansen is "Under the Skin". Really, really good.

Matthew Johnson

"I've never loved anyone the way I love you." "Me too. And now we know how." I remember that line hitting me like a freight train when I saw this in theaters. There've been very few times in my life that I sobbed uncontrollably, but that was one. Such a beautiful movie. I LOVE that you guys are checking out Spike Jonze. I would also suggest "Being John Malkovich", his debut feature (and also debut feature for writer Charlie Kaufman, who wrote "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"). Wacky and wild with a god-tier Cameron Diaz performance.

overdev

watched it in the cinema 10 years ago, felt a bit weird back then to go alone into this film as a man, how dumb I was :D

Amar

This is a a AI movie but at it's core it's a beautiful story about Human Connection.

jmundt33a

That ascension could also be framed as death. Which sort of draws parallels between that end and the opening short of Up.

This is the reason why after they watched ex machina and blade runner and George kept saying I wonder if there's a movie out there that isn't "a.i. bad" I was literally begging for them to watch this. I was so curious to hear their thoughts. I'm glad you liked it.

John Tan

Jonze wrote this as kind of a response to his ex-wife Sofia Coppola's movie Lost in Translation. Rooney Mara's character in this movie is very much inspired by her like the Giovanni Ribisi character in Lost is based on Jonze.

At 14:39 when George said imagine the sex scene in the theater, as someone who was able to see it in the theater, there was a lot of uncomfortable laughs when the screed went black. Some chuckled and laughed while others were silent. No doubt a response to a strong point of visual storytelling. Masterpiece of a film.

Pam Nail

Spike Jonze has only directed three other feature films, but they're all great. I would especially recommend Being John Malkovich, which I've only seen one other reactor do a video for.

Anamondaris

Awesome! I’ve been really looking forward to this reaction. Now you see why Scarlett is having to sue an ai company for using her voice😂

Darin Foat

I don't need a machete. But if I did, I'd shop at Betty's.

I adore this film, and I love how you two felt about it. Of course, it’s about (at least) two things: first, what do we mean when we say/think that something is genuine or real? The film poses that question in the very first scene with those letters, and with much of Samantha’s dialogue: “Are these feelings even real, or are they just programming?” (Is there a difference?) Second, what actually is love, and how can we consistently and honestly love someone without diminishing either them or ourselves? I could talk forever about this film.

if you guys don't know about the beauty Spike Jonze has given the world then you need to watch many many more things he's created :) - Being John Malkovich - Adaptation - Where the Wild Things Are - Synecdoche, New York (as producer) - I'm Here (2010 short film and one of the most beautiful shorts I've ever seen, you should watch it on the next music reaction vid - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWnqTukQmyM) - also like 50 awesome music videos that you should also check out next music reaction vid - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_Jonze_filmography#Music_videos

Simon Pegged Me

I don't know George, but the George I know from watching these videos can be distilled to this one reaction, "Do all the people who bought the app get a refund?" It's the Georgest.

Jeff I.

I came to write the same comment basically. Simone failing another movie's 'try not to cry' challenge, while George's mind is like 'Yeah, but what about refunds on the AI?' is peak Cinebinge. Never change, George and Simone! Haha

Ludovic Ligot

I agree 110 % to your comment. "Malkovich" has become a true classic (being totally weird and hilarious), "Adaptation" offers you TWO Nicolas Cage + Meryl Streep (incredible, right ?). And "I'm here" is a wonderful short indeed. As for "Synecdoche" (by Charlie Kaufman), that's one of the most amazing movies ever. But very very difficult to understand in one viewing, honestly !

AJ Lynch

Lars and the Real Girl is also a very good movie you guys should check out

ScotchBeard78

If you haven't seen it yet, please consider watching Spike Jonze' "Being John Malkovich" as well. You'll get a lot of the same feels on that one. Loved it then. Still love it now.

Daniel Gurney

Well, I guess I'm in the minority but I absolutely love "click" can't wait for the reaction!

Lex Kuzma

I'm so glad you both loved this as much as I did.

"The Life of David Gale" Pleasee

I feel like Simone understands these type of films on a much deeper philosophical and emotional level than most. There's another level to this movie that I think a lot of people miss, and I can tell Simone's mind and emotions went to that level, even if she didn't fully verbalize it on the spot. Arrival is another good example. She deeply understands and allows herself to feel the emotion of the moment. She's the best reactor by far in my opinion.

"what the fuck Jackass guy?"

It's such a beautiful movie... and kinda realistic, if AIs keep evolving the way they are now. But to me, at least, the feeling at the end isn't just "now it's just us", "the AIs are gone"; but also the sadness of realizing there is another world out there, accessible to the AIs, but not to you. When Samantha says "if you ever get here, come find me"... we all know this is impossible. How wil we feel when we realize there simply are places we are incapable of going to -- with the ones we love, or even by ourselves?... I note also he was ready to let his wife go at the end of the movie. After losing Samantha, after realizing that losing is as much a part of life as finding someone... he could see himself moving on. Just as his friend could. Maybe the one positive development here is that he stopped feeling deeply connected to the past. The one thing Samantha may have done for him is showing that it is possible to move on, even from something as deep and as meaningful as a good relationship. I don't know what this suggests about the meaning of life, though. By the end of the movie, I was left with the feeling that even growth leads to just more meaninglessness. There are more ways for the world to be meaningless that the ones we already know. I hope I'm wrong.

Sheens

Couple alternate perspectives to the ending: I don't think it's necessarily impossible that humans might some day reach the level Samantha was at. Maybe we'll eventually be able to upload our consciousnesses, or integrate AI into our brains in a way that allows us to process unlimited data and knowledge. A hundred years ago AI like Samantha would have seemed completely impossible, but now we're on the doorstep of it. And I think the ending isn't them being sad that the AIs are gone. I think it's a way of showing us how important that human connection still is. Even in a massive city surrounded by people, we sometimes still need those quiet moments with that one person to help just push all of the bullshit aside and just appreciate life for the moment you're in.

Angela D. Mitchell

I love this movie and can't remember if I posted a comment before, but I just wanted to note that Samantha Morton was the incredible actress who played the "precog" Agatha in "Minority Report," which I remember you reacting to. Meanwhile, this was so lovely and beautifully written. For an interesting movie night, you should watch "Lost in Translation" and then "Her" as a double feature and you'll basically get two gentle looks at the same failing marriage -- between Sofia Coppola and Spike Jonze -- from each of the writer-filmmaker's perspectives. They're both melancholy, gentle films with a lot of quietly beautiful moments. Jonze also did really wonderful work, meanwhile, on "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Being John Malkovich."
