Black Mirror: Season 3 - Episode 1 & 2

Comments

Mark McKeown

Niceee been waiting to return to this :)

djKENTO

the director of the first episode has done some of my favorite movies including Atonement, Hanna (my favorite modern spy movie) and Darkest Hour where Gary Oldman plays Winston Churchill... It's FNATASTIC. Anyway hope you enjoyed. I'm a nite owl so I'm actually going to bed now at 5am.

SmallWoodenDuck

Nosedive - The best thing about this episode is that it isn't even a depiction of a dystopian future. It is very much the way society functions now. The episode and the simplified rating system just make it explicit.

Da Big Appa

There are very few of the black mirror I think are entertaining. The rest are just depressing stories to make you think but not really fun to watch. Personally I think the later seasons starting with 4 has more interesting episodes instead of just bleak ones.

schnoobs

The actor that plays Cooper in playtest is Wyatt Russell, Kurt Russell's son. The episode is directed by Dan Trachtenberg who later did 10 Cloverfield Lane and Prey.

Astraeos

Well, what to say about Nosedive. Just a great episode. You guys pretty much covered it all. I think just the most important thing to pull away from this episode is that this episode is not a prognostication. It is an exaggeration of what absolutely already exists as normal social behavior around the world. This episode is what made me finally decide to delete every single bit of social media that I had at the time. I have zero social media presence, other than Reddit, Youtube or I guess Patreon. But on none of these platforms is it required for me to actually name myself as my real name, or show pictures of myself. I am anonymous, unlike Facebook, or Twitter or any of these things. The next two weeks of this show are going to be insane. Pretty much all 4 episodes coming up are some of my personal favorites of this entire show, and they cover such a wide array of different issues. It's going to be truly awesome watching these next episodes with you guys. I'm particularly looking forward to Hated in the Nation, but literally every single upcoming episode is just a straight up banger, that will leave you thinking. Also, the face that Simone was pulling throughout basically the entirety of Nosedive was just amazing. Perfect face of total disgust and confusion lol. Also also, can't be said enough how amazing Bryce Dallas Howard was with her performance, probably one of my favorite in this entire show.

Christian Poss

Check out Community episode App development and condiments known as the meowmeowbeenz episode. Very similar concept. Both good in their own way

mojo shivers

“Nosedive” has to be a top 5, maybe even top 3 episode for me. It has that Black Mirror ethos where technology may hinder society more than it helps, but then pivots to actually give the main character a more uplifting ending compared to other episodes. I don’t know if I could have taken Bryce’s character ending up completely despondent or suicidal even to close the story. This season has my favorite episode, San Junipero, and it too has this quality. I can’t wait till you guys react to that one.

Jay

I feel like BM was still pretty niche before the move to Netflix. When these 6 episodes dropped (I can't believe it's 8 years ago, WTF?) it felt like everyone was talking about it. I was worried that moving to Netflix/America would make for a more optimistic show, thankfully that didn't happen. I can't imagine Charlie Brooker being on board with that, although there are some happier endings since the move:)

Superpotroast

We are getting a bit close to Nosedive's social credit score thing..We already have the corporation version of it with ESG..I just hope we never get to the point of having a fully enforced social credit score..

Carlos Hurtado

Simone's expressions during NOSEDIVE are killing me 🤣. Sorry and thank you for watching the show.

KIERON

I adore Playtest, the way it elevates through horror is terrifying. It starts with base level stuff like spiders and bullies, ending with the real terror of hereditary dementia.

Stugotz

I'm sorry, but watching George cringe into another plane of existence during that speech in Nosedive was the funniest fucking thing ever! 😂

dudewheresmycar

For short show choices can we please have Shogun in the poll?

BigGuy209

i can’t wait for next weeks reaction to San Junipero. it’s my favorite episode.

BangDroid

I barely remember these, great rewatch!

Forrest Tanaka

Being a huge fan of tech, I thought I might feel offended at Black Mirror when I first heard about it. But it has become one of my favorite series ever. But the discussion Simone and George have after each Black Mirror episode has been the most fascinating of any of their reaction discussions. I’ve had really interesting discussions with my daughter about these episodes too. So for me, that’s the big gift of Black Mirror — the thoughts and discussions it provokes.

PIG

I remember China was introducing a system similar to Nosedive some years ago. You couldn't get on certain flights if you had low ranking and it showed up in job interviews. So it's actually happening in some few cases, which could always fester. "An eastern city in China, Suzhou, goes full-on 'Black Mirror,' a Netflix series that shows the positive and negative effects of futuristic technology and its dramatization that transcends into disaster after misuse. Its new application was launched by authorities who will monitor and rate citizen's social conduct to get bonuses and demerits. This Chinese city's new application aims to score its residents to monitor their behavior in society."

Stugotz

The actor in episode 2 is actually Kurt Russell's son

LazyArtist

China has been talking a lot about a social credit score, but I think it's mostly local and regional experimentation at this point. But it's a similar concept. Your behavior will enhance or restrict opportunities.

Astraeos

Apple don't fall far from the tree. She's one of the few nepotism placements in Hollywood that doesn't seem to be an out of touch asshole, and actually values her place and how she got there. But that could just be good media management

sarCC

Yay! San Junipero next week!!!! Can't wait!

MasterElodin

Somehow Simone looked the most uncomfortable out of all episodes in this first episode. And I agree the screeching in those phone calls was nauseating >.<

Odd Thomas

Black Mirror can be fun.

Odd Thomas

The Village is a great Bryce Dallas Howard movie! (her first lead role I think)

REDR58

Put Severance season 1 on the next TV poll please. It’s only 9 episodes.

LengyelFlo

Exactly like others are saying, Nosedive is our contemporary present time, just a little bit exaggerated, and I don't quite understand Simone and George's cringe about it because I suppose as Youtubers, you guys live like this, right? Constantly monitoring your views numbers, subscribers going up and down, choosing your content as your followers would probably like it... or not? I don't know, I never produced content. I would be curious to listen to your experiences about it.

Cinebinge

well unlike the episode, for us there a separation of work and real life. when we look at numbers, data and think of ways to grow the channel, thats the job. thats work that pays for the bills and rent. but outside of the hours where we are monitoring it and working, its just life. we're not worried about subscriber number going down because one of us accidentally bumped into someone, or because we didnt smile at a stranger in the elevator. views and subscribers are a result of our effort at the job, the more we film and edit, the more videos are made and the more subscribers could potentially exist. But how we small talk to our neighbors has no impact on that, nor does it validate our happiness. It would suck if we suddenly lose a huge amount of viewers, but it sucks in the same way that someone got demoted at work, but it doesnt then spiral into our friends ostracizing us because our viewership went down. If one day the channel ends for whatever reason, its not going to impact us from getting a job, we will still be able to go to our friends wedding whether we have 1 million subs or 0.

MR

Wouldn't want to be the beta tester of something going into your body... hahaha... hah... Heh. Not to be a science denier or anything...........

REDR58

It’s like the opposite end of vocal fry, but just as nauseating and forced.

REDR58

Simone and George, you didn’t seem to recognize Alice Eve who played the bride-to-be Naomi. You just saw her in Men In Black 3 as the younger “O.” I use instagram to look at photos of things I’m likely to never experience in person. It’s fine. My account is private and I have few followers. Don’t give a toss about that. Most of my followers are friends and vice versa.

Michael

you guys missed it! in "Playtest" the 5 circle pads they put down that had the gopher come out of, they had 4 symbols on them that meant nothing to no one. but one of the symbols was the symbol from "White Bear" the tattoo on the neck of the guy who killed the little girl and the woman kept seeing. there are a bunch of little tie ins or easter eggs to other episodes that connects everything, so keep your eyes and ears open. Also, my two biggest fears are open water, and Alzheimer's. the first time I watched this episode and he went in that room and the woman was talking to him in the ear piece about how he cant remember, that really freaked me out. Crazy show, but such brilliant writing.

Allen Pass

I agree with Simone, Black Mirror is not my cup of tea.

AJ Lynch

the guy in the second episode is Wyatt Russell. He is the son of Kurt Russell and looks exactly like him and has been in some great films such as Goon 2, 22 Jump Street and even starred in Marvel's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He also plays a young Kurt Russell in the show Monarch. You should check out the movie eXitenZ as it is a very underrated David Cronenburg.

REDR58

The Jurassic World Series, which seems to get a lot of hate for some reason, is worth watching I think especially because of Bryce Dallas Howard.

Tee Pee

Let's be real here, the reason "Nosedive" is so aggravating to watch is because it's kind of a spot on representation of the current state of things...

Jesse Coombs

Play testing can also be done for board games, card games, role playing games, LARPS, new types of sports, casino games, etc. Really any type of game, not just video games.

JBK405

I saw it mentioned up above already, but it's hilarious that the series "Community" did an episode very similar to "Nosedive" a few years earlier. Many people assumed the order was reversed and that Community was parodying this episode, as they couldn't believe the comedy show got there first. Charlie Brooker says it's just a wild coincidence. The idea of being eternally stuck inside virtual reality, and "escaping" over and over again only to discover each time that you're still inside, is a classic staple of sci-fi and speculative fiction. I've seen it explored a dozen different ways, from philosophical to (as here) straight horror. As Knight Two said at the end of the Babylon 5 episode "And the sky full of stars": Maybe you're still inside. Maybe we're both still inside... Neuralink, an Elon Musk company, has been developing neurotechnology for the past few years. Their animal trials made big news for just how many of their test subjects had to be euthanized due to medical issues. Despite this, they proceeded to human trials earlier this year.

jose giron

I'm so happy you guys are doing season 3 rn, it's the height of black mirror imo, all the episodes are bangers this season, especially hated in the nation and san junipero. Season 4 close to peak as well imo

REDR58

In the “Playtest” episode, Hannah John-Kamen plays “Sonja” and she was also in “Ant-Man and the Wasp” as “Ghost” and in “Ready Player One.”

REDR58

Yeah, if you are depending on / hoping that every single person on the aircraft will turn off their phones or use airplane mode to somehow avert potential disaster, you’d be taking a massive risk. There is nothing cell phone can do to damage commercial aircraft: https://qz.com/phone-airplane-mode-myth-1851286214

MacGuffinStuff

I was excited when I saw which episodes you were watching, they're both two of my favorite episodes. I remember after you watched the first couple how browbeaten you guys seemed lol, and I wanted to say, there's at least one happy ending in this show I promise, but I didn't want to spoil it. I think Nosedive is a cautionary tale but also gives a lot of hope, because if you think about it, detaching from social media really is a simple as ignoring it, you would be In an increasing way be cut off from a lot of society nowadays. Once, years ago, I was in a pretty rough spot, sleeping on friends' couches, trying to find a job, but I couldn't even apply to most places without a computer, which I had to go to the public library to find. Dropping out of society is harder than it sounds lol. And I love how it's an allegory for classism in general. But yeah, there's that hope of just going back to being yourself. And Dallas Bryce Howard and Wyatt Russell were both so good in these episodes. I know they're Nepobabies but they're good, and I think it follows that if your dad's a carpenter and you want to be a carpenter too, there's a good chance of you growing up to be a good carpenter. Oof, Alzheimer's or something similar is probably my biggest fear too. Locked in syndrome. What scares me is that my uncle died of a rare condition, sort of the opposite of Alzheimer's because his brain lost no higher functions, but he steadily lost control over his body until he couldn't speak or feed himself or anything, but all the time he was still there, you could see it in his eyes. And he was a great man. Oh man this show really takes it out of you. I haven't seen any seasons beyond 3, but I recall this was my favorite season up to then.

Sergio Meira

After I finished watching Nosedive for the first time, I thought "who said Back Mirror episodes never have happy endings?" And I felt the sudden urge to call all the people I love and care about to tell them to fuck themselves for Christmas. Seriously, though... that little dialogue at the end, the moment when people can finally be honest and sincere... I really hope they'll be happy together forever.

Sergio Meira

Hmmm... let's put it this way. I don't watch Black Mirror when I feel like a cup of tea. ;-)

Sara Something

I get what you both were saying about the positives of living like the truck driver but I think it’s ignoring the fact that she lost her husband because he was denied the medical care he needed because of his social ranking. I think it’s a more sinister world than just, oh, I don’t get to have fake friends anymore if I have a lower rank. Better Housing, travel, medical care are all rewards of having a higher rank and that’s the true horror here. It’s less about the dangers of social media and more about class systems.

Eric Tanaka

Looks like no one has mentioned yet, but it's always been an Netflix original show, but the versions you guys watch just didn't include the Netflix logo for the first 2 seasons

Pasemi

send her to the cringe department

sarCC

He really shows his range by being adorably goofy in 22 Jump Street, then channeling his father's Snake Plisken performance in Overlord, a sadly underseen film that is one of the most satisfying war movies of all-time.

Michael

The first 2 seasons were on BBC, not a netflix original. netflix put them on their platform and after people started watching and liking them they decided to make more

Jay

She was also in 15 Million Merits. She was the successful singer on Hot Shot.

Jay

Glad yous are going to do season 4, Simone will get such a kick out of episode 1. I also got mixed up, I thought Metalhead was the 5th episode in season 3, but it's the 5th in season 4. One of my favourites...... terrifying!

iOmegaTron

WOO! I'm so excited you two are continuing!!

Sergio Meira

You wonder how it got to be like that. With money, it's because a hospital can run out of resources and need cash, but what makes even hospitals take into account your social ranking? Brrr. What a world.

Tee Pee

Severance, The Haunting of Hill House, Queens Gambit...There are plenty of good 1 season shows to fill up the slots between BCS seasons

Patrick Brownfield

I’m so stoked to see your reaction to next weeks episodes - two of my all time favorites!

Mark McKeown

A couple of fun things about Playtest; - George spotted the FACE/OFF DVD on Sonya’s shelf, a nice nod to what happens to her virtual self later in the episode on the kitchen floor. - The sound of the phone interference is frequently heard throughout the episode’s soundtrack, normally very muffled though. - On the AR discs for the gopher game is the White Bear symbol - The cause of death is so ironic, ‘Called “Mom”’, because infact that’s the one thing he didn’t do, and had he just done that and asked for money he wouldn’t have ended up where he did.

EMB

A comment on where the "fun" is in social media. I was actually listening to an interview today of someone who researches social media and media literacy. They were saying that the positive dopamine effect on your brain from likes, and shares and comments and such is very powerful. But the more interesting observation they made was that the positive stimulus or reinforcement isn't necessarily fixed. The fact that the reward in your brain can happen at any time keeps you checking again, and again, because the reward might happen THIS time you check. I'm glad I'm not on most social media, though I need to cut down on my reddit usage. That shit is getting exhausting. A couple other shows had episodes with this social rating type of thing. The two that come to mind are The Orville, and Community. It generally doesn't look pretty in either, because that's a fucked up way for people to live.

Starman Deluxe

The actor who played Cooper in "playtest" is Wyatt Russell. He's the son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. He's also the half brother of Kate Hudson who you just watched in "Glass Onion"

Kenneth thomas

I really enjoy a lot of the eps of black mirror but Nosedive has always been my absolute favorite by far. There's something about the commentary on social media and relationships between people that is so interesting and unique. Best ending too.

Opti_Frog

Late to this one, because i'm like Simone. I kind of dread every new episode of BM, but Nosedive was probably my favourite (after The National Anthem) so far. It was so. Fucking. Funny. I was laughing my ass off every time George cringed, and the episode had a perfect ending. Yeah, the world of Nosedive is an utter nightmare, but i've never done the Instagram or Facebook thing so all the pastels and the fakery was hilarious to me. Great, great episode. Playtest was fun, but i've seen too many "what is reality?" stories to be surprised by anything that happened. As soon as Katie said AR, i knew that he would still be sitting in that chair when the "game" was over. 😄

Crystal

not to mention Kurt himself in their recent reaction to Escape from New York. if you all are looking for a bit of fluff, I highly recommend "Overboard" from 1987, with Goldie & Kurt starring together. very 80's, super fun!

Be Human

Nosedive, we're heading in that direction.
