It's old. I'm old. Don't care. Great frekin' movie. Let's goo!

brian burke

oh sorry im the second one here, but one of my favorite movies, see escape from LA, if you want, but its a pretty bad sequel.

BigGuy209

i been waiting for you guys to react to this movie. love this movie!🐍

Maiki

As a non-native speaker, i had to look up manhole. Somehow i had something totally different in mind... :(

brian burke
>>143974943

i was only 3 in 1981 when this came out, i think i first saw it in late 1980s i think maybe, how about yourself?

djKENTO

“how did they move the head”… turns out POSTERS FUCKIN LIE! hahahaha

djKENTO
>>143976720

Also can’t wait to see if they George mentions Metal Gear…

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Great movie but it always makes me think of Metal Gear Solid because of the clear influence it had on Hideo Kojima’s early games in the series. Also is there anything about freakish memory on that test? Because I feel like I would be a worrying score lol

Magnificent Gojira

You really should watch The Good, the Bad and the Ugly someday (and preferably react to it)

JayF

Can't wait for you to get to Russell's performance in Soldier (1998). It's very different but one of my favorites of his. Also Backdraft (1991) is a great film with him.

brian burke

some extra trivia, the song the band plays on the stage is a dark humor song called "everybody's coming to NY" about living in ny prison, it's available online and is funny. one of the musicians there playing is john carpenter himself, john carpenter also did the music for this movie as he does for most of his movies,

JediLounger

Since this is a Carpenter movie, I wanted to again restate my suggestion about They Live (1988). Whenever you guys end up watching it, do not look at the marketing material or the IMDb for the movie, as they spoil too much of the mystery.

brian burke

at the time of this movie adriane barbeau ( maggie) was john carpenters wife, and the woman who gets pulled into the floor by the cannibals was season hubley, kurt russels wife. sadly both marriages ended in divorce later. yes the designers of metal gear solid video games have listed this movie as a influence for that game series. donald plesance who plays the president was in UK air force in world war 2, got his plane shot down by germans and was POW, he used that experience for this role of being held prisoner by the duke, so his performance of fear seems even more real when you know he was a POW. , and the duke of ny is very famous musician and great singer issac hayes, who aside from that did some acting and was the voice of chef on SOUTH PARK. that is some wild trivia isn't it, also there are talks about this being turned into a video game similar to Grand THEFT AUTO series or HALO style, hopefully it gets made soon.

brian burke

i just had to mention all that, since im a big fan of this, alot is on the dvd commentary too with kurt russel and john carpenter. check it out sometime

JayF

Also, all Cinebinge followers when they see Simone's attraction for bad boys in this movie. (link is safe) https://tenor.com/MLVj.gif

JayF

Donald Pleasence (the president) plays a role in The Great Escape that you both will absolutely love.

Amos T Fairchild

But then there's a sequel, so I guess the world didn't blow up.

G P

Check out the Dollars Trilogy (or at least The Good The Bad and The Ugly)

Lamont Cranston

Kurt Russell was a Disney child star. Also, apparently Walt Disney's final words before he died were 'Kurt Russell'.

Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y54c3qGb7LE Lyrics: Shoot a cop With a gun The Big Apple is plenty of fun Stab a priest With a fork And you'll spend your vacation in New York Rob a bank Take a truck You can get here by stealing a buck This is bliss It's a lark Honey, everyone's coming to New York! No more Yankees Strike the word from your ears Play the roulette There's no more opera at the Met This is hell This is fate But now this is your home and it's great So rejoice Pop a cork Honey, everyone's coming to New York!

Odd Thomas

One of the weaker JC entries tbh. Christine and Starman should be next imo

Odd Thomas

A great Kurt Russell movie: Death Proof (Tarantino)

Richard

Kurt signed a ten-year contract with Disney in the late 60s. The movies were, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), Now You See Him, Now You Don't (1972), and The Strongest Man in the World (1975). He had a cameo as a kid kicking Elvis in the movie It Happened at the World's Fair, he later played Elvis in a TV movie in which he was nominated for an Emmy.

JayF
>>143989059

I don't agree that this one is one of his weaker films but I do love the other two movies.

NotlobParrot

I believe the whole "Green CG Lines for Maps" trope in movies BEGAN with Escape from New York (ironic, considering it's a practical model). The Technology barely existed before this except for Star Wars and a couple others. Even A New Hope only uses Computer Graphics for the Death Star Plans. Especially considering the budget of Escape From New York, those Map/Radar sequences were *very* advanced for 1981. EDIT: To be clear, there are CG graphics in EFNY, just not the Green Map Wireframe Stuff. I watched a BTS ages ago and had forgotten that the most impressive graphic was a practical trick.

REDR58

Nick Castle, who wrote this movie with John Carpenter plays Michael Myers in the original “Halloween” movie from 1978. He would also later direct “The Last Starfighter” (1984) movie that features very early photorealistic (for the time) CGI visual effects. It’s a fun movie you guys should definitely check out.

Kyle Baker

Welp going to have to recommend watching "The Computer wore tennis shoes" it will blow your mind watching Kurt Russell in that.

Black
>>143994297

ya'll should really watch the whole video, especially the trivia stuff at the end before trying to share knowledge lmao.

Opti_Frog

It's hard to overestimate just how influential this little movie turned out to be. The trivia you read kind of explains why Carpenter was known for making rather cheap movies look expensive. The president's storyline, especially the ending, is a sign of the times. Carpenter wrote the script soon after the Watergate scandal, saying: "The whole feeling of the nation was one of real cynicism about the president." The satire isn't subtle, but it fits the movie perfectly. Also, Carpenter's score is just superb. One of his best. And no, Escape from LA is sadly not good. I would love to see you react to John Carpenter's The Fog, though it's unlikely to win any poll.

REDR58
>>143994297

I’ve done that, commenting on things in the movie as it goes along but now I just take notes and wait for Simone and George to finish!

Mr. Writhms

Out of John Carpenter’s early movies, people often react to “Halloween” (1978), “Escape From New York” (1981), and “The Thing” (1982). They always skip over “Assault on Precinct 13” (1976) and “The Fog” (1980), which are excellent. All of Carpenter’s early films, when he wrote, directed, and scored the music, show him in his top form. Please get around to those two neglected and underrated movies. (Though the late great Ennio Morricone scored the music for "The Thing" but who can blame Carpenter for making that exception?)

Jordan9663

Recommend three days of the condor

Michael Seaney

Great reaction 🙂 thanks! One of Carpenters movies 🎥 that hasn’t been reacted to much is Assault on Precinct 13. Hopefully 🤞 that will happen one day 😁

D. T. Nelson

Chock Full o Nuts is a coffee brand. They also have cafes/delis (mostly east coast) similar to Starbucks that started disappearing in the 70s. Most were gone by 1990. Sara Lee purchased the company in the late 90s. The cafes/delis started returning around 2010. Kurt Russell did a lot of live action Disney movies as a kid/teen/YA during the 60s and 70s. The Barefoot Executive, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, The Absent-Minded Professor, Son of Flubber, Now You See Him Now You Don't, and others. He also voiced Copper in Disney's The Fox and the Hound. It was what he was most known for until this movie and The Thing, then he started taking on action movies and comedies.

Lost1Sole

It may be well worth sourcing a physical copy of this move - it has a great commentary with Russel and Carpenter drinking, smoking, and talking about completely different things. For instance, when Snake, Cabbie, Brains and Maggie are coming down the steps from Brains... pad, Mr. Carpenter is talking about the camera and lenses used, and that there is no steady-cam - the operator is being tugged backward. When he finishes, Mr. Russel says "Anybody could've been in that shot with Adrienne (Barbeau) - they could have been throwing knives and doing cartwheels, and nobody would have noticed". It's an awesome commentary!

Spacedone

The green computer screens wasn't a movie thing. Back in the early days of computers the old cheap office CRT monitors used green phospher so it resulted in a green tinge to everything.

punterjoe

Snake came back in Escape From L.A. - equal time for the other coast. While you can never recapture that first time feeling, you may still enjoy the movie. Pam Grier alone is worth the watch. Kurt & Jodie Foster both got their start as child stars doing Disney films. Check out The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (Kurt) and the original Freaky Friday (Jodie)

MikeO8575

I fucking love this movie. Rented it when i was about 8 or 9 from the local video store, which was '83 or '84, and watched it 3 times in the 24 hrs i had it. lol

mky
>>144008293

I remember "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes" and "The Strongest Man in the World" from this era. (Also, "The World's Greatest Athlete" starring Jan-Michael Vincent, and "That Darn Cat" for some reason.)

djKENTO

oh my favorite special effect fact... the 3D displays on the screens of the gliders? That's black boxes with neon green lines painted on them filmed with a black light.

Thomas Yanez
>>144013258

Same for "The Thing" and "Big Trouble in Little China". Best commentary tracks ever.

Naturekitty5309

yall need to look up the IMDB on Harry Dean Stanton.. (Brain)You have definitely seen him before. Maggie (Adrienne Barbou) also did a voice for Batman the animated series

JoeE

Was always a fan of Adrienne barbeau. Kurt russelll was a child actor in Disney productions

Skyruff

"Peter Pan on drugs" is "Puck". Got to love Shakespeare.

Haye Zeus

I love everything about this movie. The look. The music. The characters. Just fun pulpy yet gritty 80’s fun. Another film that I feel have the same sort of vibes is The Warriors which I definitely recommend.

Skyruff

"The Brain" - Harry Dean Stanton also seen in Alien and Avengers and many more.

Skyruff

Speaking of people to dangerous to let live, i recommend "RED" with al all star cast and a gest staring "Cabby".

brian burke
>>143978260

yep thats the one, i want to know more about the other people left inside nyc, it needs a better sequel or prequel, or video game, or all 3.

Skyruff

"Duke of New York" = "Chef" from South Park

Drew Acheson

Anyone else keeping getting out of sync? I'm watching on Prime and have to do micro resyncs semi-frequently.

Yes their video was slightly faster and I was using a Blu-ray rip.

REDR58

The only time there is any filming done near the real Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island is the scene near the beginning. As the camera pans to the right when Hauk's assistant Rehme descends the stairs and enters that little "Security Control" booth, there is a hidden transition and suddenly we see the large concrete bridge-looking thing with all the helicopters parked in front of it. That is the Sepulveda Dam in the San Fernando Valley, California, which was built from 1940 to 1941 . Speaking of Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty, many people don't know that the statue and its pedestal is built on top of the filled-in Fort Wood, a 11-pointed star fortress built of stone between 1808 and 1811. Fort Wood was used as part of the defenses of New York Harbor. You can see two of the tips of the points of the star-shape as Rehme walks down the steps. Telex is a system of sending text messages over phone lines. Basically it's electronic typewriters that are used to send and receive a message, typed in at one end and printed out on the other.

FranciscoGios

If you guys are still curious watch the sequel it’s good but not good enough for the rest, I’ve never watched Russel’s Disney four films but I believe he was discovered by Disney in a young age.

simon brouillard

They Live for more Carpenter and Tango & Cash for Russell with Stallone in a very 80s action movie. As for Escape from LA, its so bad and it looks even worse (especially when you realize it came out the same summer as Jurassic Park) , cinecringe worthy

GenXFilmComposer

A John Carpenter classic both in film and score. Kurt Russell said he was basically doing a Clint Eastwood impression in this movie and a John Wayne impression in 'Big Trouble In Little China'. 🍿🎧📼

Jesse Coombs

John Carpenter does the music for most of his movies, so he's as much of a composer as a director. He's even gone on tour conducting music!

David Lonewolf Wright

Escape from LA is not as good as Escape from New York, but it is a lot of fun with also quite a few surprise casting.

Justtired

Escape from LA, despite fun performances by Pam Grier, Steve Buscemi and Bruce Campbell, is CineCringe worthy. Not sure if George said anything but The Duke is played by Isaac Hayes, the original voice of Chef from South Park. And George, since you find Adrienne Barbeau so distracting (and she is)…Swamp Thing (1982). That’s all I’m saying. 🤣😂

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Ah, you guys forgot about Big Trouble In Little China and it hurts my soul just a little bit lol because I do love that one so much, but I love that you guys enjoyed this one. John Carpenter is my all time favorite horror director and you've still got a few of his greatest to watch, They Live (you'll love, promise), The Fog, Starman, Christine, and to finish the Apocalypse Trilogy: Prince of Darkness and In The Mouth Of Madness. And his episode of Masters of Horror is arguably the best of the series, Cigarette Burns is a masterpiece, I think.

PoopsInShoes

The expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 is heavily based on Escape from New York.

3dbadboy1

In the questionnaire, it sounds like certain people in power around the world today.

3dbadboy1

That particular Out of Towners is a remake of a 60s movie with Jack Lemmon. It's basically the story of a couple moving long distance to New York and it seemed like every possible thing that could go wrong went wrong along the way and it is a comedy.

3dbadboy1

The actor who was the President was a british actor Donald Pleasence. Probably why he was so un-Presidential.

BangDroid

Is John Carpenter a sociopath? Convince a city to blackout 10 blocks, convince the US gov to sell a bridge for $1. That's some crazy powers of persuasion. lol

sarCC

Snake from the Metal Gear series was definitely inspired by this. But on the cover art for the release of the first Metal Gear game, the character design is modeled after actor Michael Biehn from The Terminator and Aliens.

REDR58

For more John Carpenter, check out Starman from 1984. It has Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen. Check it out. It’s quite different from the other Carpenter movies.

Jay Davis
>>144055138

100% throwing my hat in behind They Live and Starman. Both classics. Both very different from one another. Both great.

michael denny

George there were 220 flights of stairs in the WTC

Crunkljack

Late 60's early 70's Disney produced some live action movies aimed at kids/families. I remember 'The Strongest Man in The World'? (Not sure of the title). Where, through some lab accident (?) he gains super strength. And another where he gains super intelligence maybe? Hard to remember I was 6 or 7 when I saw them in the 70's.

sarCC
>>144136344

Starring Kurt Russell, you mean? One was The Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes.

Grumpy_Chef

Kurt also was the boy who kicked Elvis Presley in the shin in "It happened at the World's Fair" Uncredited

Scott McClintock

Oooh. That sweet transition from Liberty Island to the L.A. river.

Dustin Duvall

Surprised George didn't say the studio was anal about copyright

Chase Schleich

Avoid the sequel, Escape From LA. It's awful. Basically a copy/paste of the Escape From New York script, but with some truly awful effects. Some parts of it are ok, but the film overall is bad. Really wish they'd do a 3rd one now with an old Snake.

maxthesilent
>>144036408

yeah my copy matched theirs but it happened to be 24.0 fps instead of the standard 23.98

Persnickity

Looks like Peter Pan snorted too much fairy dust

Trevor S Bright

Kurt Russell was in a bunch of live action Disney movies from the 70s. The 1 that comes to mind is "The Computer That Wore Tennis Shoes" where he plays like a genius inventor college student....he also played Copper the Hounddog (the adult version of him, not the pup who was Corey Feldman) in "The Fox and the Hound".

Trevor S Bright

This wasn't Carpenter's 1st movie. That would be a movie called "Dark Star" in the 70s, followed by "Assault on Precinct 13", then "Halloween", the "The Fog", then "Escape from New York"...so Carpenter was already famous. And this was before "The Thing" btw.

Trevor S Bright

Shout out to Isaac Hayes as the Duke of New York...South Park's Chef himself!!! Chef: Hello children! Kyle, Stan, Kenny, Cartman: Hey Duke!!

Trevor S Bright

Weird that Kurt Russell said he based his performance on Clint Eastwood, cuz the guy who played Hauk, Lee Van Cleef, was in 2 entries of the "Dollars Trilogy" with Eastwood. He wasn't in the 1st one "A Fistful of Dollars", but he was in "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly"

pinkdino99

Escape From LA is a travesty. The external shots were done in St Louis which as a city was so dilapidated that they only needed a little window dressing. Maggie (Adrienne Barbeau) became Mrs John Carpenter. Do The Fog at Halloween which has lots of actors from here. Russell was a Disney child actor.

804Media

When this movie was made, NY was about a decade and a half into a massive upswing in crime and social unrest, starting in the mid-to-late 60s. Probably the most famous incident in the 60s (1964) was the story of Kitty Genovese, in Kew Gardens, in the outer borough of Queens. The 70s had organized crime and drug wars; '75-'77, the "Son of Sam" was stalking around the outer boroughs; property value collapse and tenant flight in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, leading to intentional arson by some building owners to recoup ANYTHING they could though insurance claims (obvious fraud); riots and looting during the '77 blackout along Broadway in Brooklyn (the border of the Bushwick and Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhoods, where I lived until recently); and the Guardian Angels patrolling the subways as active Samaritan guards against muggings and (worse things) where the police were spread too thin or just wouldn't go. By the early 80s, people were vocally writing the city off as a virtual prison for the citizens who didn't have the means to "escape." Given all of that, it wasn't until the 90s that the city was turned around and became what you recognize as the richest city on the eastern seaboard, today. It was very much on the same path as Philadelphia, Chicago, and Detroit were in the same time period. The financial district in lower Manhattan is the home of the NYSE, but nothing says they can't move operations if it becomes non-viable. They've threatened to do so on a few occasions. This movie described a not-too-distant future that many believed wasn't such a long shot, given the trajectory over the preceding 15 years or so.

MarkGauci85

Can someone explain to me what version of this film they're watching? Cause I'm from Australia and even world hopping with a vpn hasn't helped me find a 1:30:56 version of this film. Only the 1:39:07 version is available. What bootleg are they using?

Ron
>>151700864

This is actually 1:39:07 and (for me anyway) synced perfectly.

Ron

I'm not a huge fan of Escape from LA, but I think it's still worth of watch if you just want to meet-up with Snake again. There are some nuggets of fun to be had even if the movie as a whole isn't great.
