About the opening discussion with Youtube and copyright… it was South Park that caused the big change. Whole seasons would be uploaded. Family Guy and the Simpsons too. Paramount took a lot of action against Youtube and got that changed. They also submitted all their content for the algo to detect. They were the first big one. Also Anime is VERY tricky for reactions because there are no fair use laws in like we have in USA. I don’t know what the rules are in Canada. But that’s why Ghibli is able to go so hard. They went harder after they got the licensing rights back from Disney too. Really glad we got some anime on the channel tho. If you did Ghost in the Shell and its’ sequel my brain would explode.

Marc Viloria

Yes! I was in Shinjuku a few weeks ago. It is unreal how many people travel from around the world just to see those steps at the end of the film. I met people from Italy , Korea and the Philippines. They are located near a beautiful shrine but the crowds are around those steps.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

For what it’s worth I wish the best of luck for the copyright gods leaving y’all alone on this one. That said, this is one of the most moving anime films of the past decade. The hand drawn, rotoscoped animation is truly astounding. Definitely also recommend “Suzume” by the same team, for sure.

Andrew Hussey

One of my favorites, this director is just spectacular. Consequently, all his movies from my understanding take place in a shared universe, there's a scene in his next one called Weathering With You which is again, just top tier anime, where you see Mitsuha selling jewelry, if memory serves its implied she's married presumably to Taki...just a passing role but was a sweet little Easter egg when I saw it. And yes, his next one, Suzume is also incredible, he has a real skill for the fantastical as related to intensely personal stories...I've yet to see anything by him I didn't like

iamweasel

Yes, Sanderson was inspired by this movie.

Astraeos

Glad you guys are branching out into some anime movies. But no thanks on this one. I absolutely do not feel like having a massive existential depression this morning lol. I'll catch your reaction to this some other time.

Ricardo Alanis

This is one of my favorite movies of all time, animated or not. It's just so beautiful and heartbreaking and funny. Radwimps' soundtrack/songs are also amazing. The same creators and Radwimps also did "Weathering With You" and "Suzume", which are also great and I also recommend "Belle".

djKENTO

great reaction. Fantastic way to wrap up my nite owl activities. Hope for more anime in the future. Weird how many GORGEOUS anime are about a meteor hitting a small town...

Sergio Meira

As for anime and high school, not only did anime start out as a medium targeted to highschoolers, but it also so happens that highschool is idolized in Japan as a time of freedom and discovering who we are -- before we all become salarymen and -women, slaves to The Man. Here's a video about this topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LfQAxcSZJ0

Martin Roca

YES! I was waiting for this. Going to watch in a bit, but just let me recommend more movies like this. A Silent Voice I Want to eat your pancreas Suzume Weather with you Garden of Words (it's only 40 mins) 5cm per second This are my top!

El Mémé

Hi guys ! Couldn't you watch Studio Ghibli movies if you kept it as a patreon exclusive like you do with a few things already ? Maybe it makes no difference or you don't wanna make more patreon only stuff, I was just wondering.

Mia Mccline

I adore The Lake House! I'm so happy you guys enjoyed this movie, it's one of my top 5 favs

E. D.

Just watched this the first time with you along, love that anime, great reaction.

Cinebinge

so basically there are 3 main things that are holding us back from Ghibli films. - the first is that Ghibli, unlike other studios, dont just have aggressive bots scanning, but they have aggressive people doing take downs. we've heard from first hand experience with other channels that they deliberately wait until a channel has 3 or more of their films, then file strikes all at the same time so that the channel is immediately taken down without a fighting chance. A24 took down Ex Machina from us, putting us on a 90 day probation period where if we get 2 more strikes from anywhere, channel is auto deleted. Ghibli knows this and thats why they wait till there are 3 or more to do the strikes at once. that tells us its intentionally aggressive human behavior, not over zealous bots. that tells us they will go out of their way to scan and find anything and everything to do take downs, regardless of platform. - the second reason is that when it comes to films, the YT edit is very vital for our channel as it functions as a "store front". the videos go out for free but its the only way anyone can find us in any meaningful way. of course we can do the occasional films that are patreon only, but the trade off is that no one outside of those already here will ever know it exists. and if it will never get a YT release, then that means it can not be part of the weekly schedule, which means it can only ever be filmed as an extra content when there is time. - which leads to the third reason. every extra content we do comes at giving up something else. we managed to squeeze in an extra show each week now because the two of us have decided to give up something in our own time so we can film a bit extra. which is why if whenever we choose to do something extra, it comes with a long deliberation of "is this sustainable in the long term". we try our best to not start something and then take it away after a while, a lesson we've learned over the last few years. so if, despite the first 2 reasons, we decide to start doing films that are patreon only. does it become a consistent thing? is it a 1 off? will a 1 off lead to a few happy people and a lot of unhappy people because "why this one and not these other ones"? if we make it a consistent thing, then at what frequency and how do we decide which ones to do each time if its once in blue moon? is it yet another poll? do we only include ghibli or do we also include copyright risky ones? whats consider risky? we know ghibli and A24 are, but A24 outsources their copyright to a third party, does that third party represent other studios? what about warner brothers and disney, who are heavy handed but only with bots not people. and lastly what can we give up in either channel or personal life to do this instead? ultimately, we see it this way. no film or studio is off the table for us. with the recent A24 issue, we're still working on it and trying to find ways around it. but even if we dont, all we have to do is wait out the 90 day probation and return to them one day in the future. maybe with much more careful and heavy handed editing. and with Ghibli, perhaps one laws may change in Japan. or perhaps we some day do a second channel that is strictly for anime. we dont know yet, its never off the table, just held off for the time being.

BlindPanda

certainly one of my favorites, really glad you guys reacted to it !

Honey Hermsen

Upgraded my membership, just to see your full reaction to this. I have seen this film for the first time 2 months ago and thought it was one of the best films I've ever seen. Last week I saw it again and thought it was even better than the first time, because you catch many more details. So I guess I am watching it for a third time now

VinnyAhhh

I'm gonna definitely second 'A Silent Voice' — tho let me tell you I cried during "Your Name" but I fucking *sobbed* during 'A Silent Voice'

Belekai

Im going to have to play Devils Advocate here, im probably the only person on the planet that cant stand Anime. Its personal preference for sure, but honestly i have zero interest in it. I dont know if its the stupid voices or the borderline legalized pedophilia, Probably not the most popular opinion but each to their own :)

Garin

I loved this. Just dropping a recommendation for another anime: "A Silent Voice"

sarCC

Yay! This is just the pick-me-up I need this weekend/existence. Also, Suzume is an incredible film, too.

El Mémé

Glad you guys enjoyed the movie ! I have a bit of trivia since you guys seem to like it so here goes : In the first scene where Mitsuha is in Taki's body and talking to his friends, they sort of make faces at her because she keeps using a pronoun that Taki wouldn't use. The first she uses is "watashi", which is sort of a formal way to say "i", so it'd be weird for Taki to use it with his friends. Then she says "watakushi" which is even more formal, and then "boku", which is used by men when trying to sound humble or younger, and is often used by servants. I think you can even write it with a kanji that means servant but don't quote me on that. Finally she settles on "ore", which is sort of a manlier way to say "i", and the friends confirm that this is the one Taki usually uses. I think most manga protagonists like Goku and such use that one. Yeah i wouldn' want to be the one who had to translate that part. Anyway that's it ! I'm sure there's loads more but this is the only thing i could recall.

JiggyTurtle

A devil's advocate expresses something they don't necessarily believe in for the sake of discussion. You are not playing that part at all. You're just leaving a blanket insult and hiding behind "my opinion" like any internet hipster :)

Shane Driscoll

It's a great film, but there were some plot holes that kind of took me out of the story. The film asks the audience to just accept that, during the entire time that Mitsuha and Taki were switching bodies: - Neither of them ever noticed that it was 3 years earlier/later - Taki never learned the name of the name of Mitsuha's hometown - Neither of them immediately thought to try texting or calling each other so they could have a real time conversation

Prof. Writhms

George: Since you are introducing anime on the channel, are you guys willing to watch some features that are not so PG/family-friendly? My introduction to anime was back in the late '90s. A friend of mine blew me away with titles like: "Akira" (1988) "Ninja Scroll" (1993) "Wicked City" (1993) "Vampire Hunter D" (1985) "Ghost in the Shell" (1995) Some of them can get pretty violent and/or sexual (nothing pornographic). I was just wondering if you would consider posting these types of anime?

Philipp Roensch

Yay! What a wonderful movie, definitely one of my favorites, and I'm so happy you checked it out. For me, it describes love as a fateful and unbreaking connection through time, really romantic stuff, but also spiritual. You might want to add all the songs to your music reaction schedule, or put them on your ears right away^^. I hope this one does well with copyright, Makoto Shinkai has even more amazing movies to check out. Wolf Children is another highly regarded one, I've yet to see it.

Odd Thomas

Nimona is a great animated movie

Odd Thomas

Another great movie involving a shooting star: Stardust (2007)

Odd Thomas

Ugh, I hate when people say 'bring tissues'. That's basically a huge spoiler, basically saying 'X dies at the end!". Better to not say anything.

Logan Kerlee

You and me both! This anime was VERY touching. Holy crap, I was filled with emotions.

Honey Hermsen

I think the first two can be explained by the "forgetting" part of this. The third one is kinda explained, that, when they try to call, it doesn't connect, because Mitsuha is already dead and Taki might have had a different phone number 3 years earlier. And because his bodyswap hasn't even started he wouldn't know what to do with such a phone call

Cincassette

It's funny, out of the top 200 most popular films on Letterboxd, all of the ones I haven't watched yet are almost exclusively Anime/animated, Marvel or LOTR movies. I just never really found any interest to watch them, despite hearing a lot of great things about them. I think i'd probably enjoy a lot of them once i get over my initial preconceptions, and will go down the rabbit hole eventually.

JediLounger

On a related note, Natalie Gold is going to try to do Ghibli movies only for Patreon, and never do a YouTube edit. Might want to keep an eye on that and see how it goes for her.

Odd Thomas

A similarly themed film is Every Day, where the main character wakes each day in a new body. Freaky is a good body-swap comedy too (think Halloween meets Freaky Friday)

sarCC

Freaky's great, but was released during the pandemic and got overlooked by many. It also probably would've done better if they were able to use the more informative shooting title "Freaky Friday The 13th."

VinnyAhhh

Re-watching this with y'all reminded me to check in on the live-action western adaptation of this that has been in development for a while — going through a TON of prospective directors and writers. Latest news seems to be from 2022 where Carlos López Estrada was tapped to direct & write it.

Amar

I don't watch animation movies but i will when it's critically acclaimed. I love good movies no matter the medium, just not horror movies.

Redrum Sacrament

This movie is the perfect example how to write a great story and character Depth. This is on my list of favorite movies. When I saw this for the first, I was blown away and felt emotional. Another to watch is Belle 2021.

Monica Alarcon

I had a hard time finding that Brandon Sanderson novel... I was looking it up as "You, Me and the Nightmare Painter"...

Collinson

Agreed. With your A24 issues anime can be a hotbed of strikes so be very careful.

mky

The next time I watch this movie, I'll make sure to have some Spam Musubi to snack on.

Sean

YESSSS!!! They absolutely have to do that one. Another tear jerker

Scoobay

Idk if it matters to you, but Ghibli is pronounced “Jibli” or “Jiburi” for the Japanese pronunciation. It got its name from an Italian aircraft. Not being critical, I only just learned it myself.

Foodassassin4life

Please consider Cowboy Bebop as a TV show reaction. As you stated in the intro, anime is kind of contentious thing to put on YouTube so I feel like a TV show without a YouTube edit like you do for many other TV shows would be safe as a watch along reaction

ExtraBigAssTaco

Thank you for this one. I had not seen it yet, and it was beautiful in many ways. A new favorite.

Marc Viloria

Fun Fact: the voice of Taki is the actor, Kamiki Ryūnosuke. He was the lead character/kamikaze pilot in Godzilla Minus One. Extra Fun Fact for Ghibli fans: He was also the voice of the giant baby, Boh, in Spirited Away.

Noel Valdez

I've already committed myself to getting a tattoo inspired by this movie someday. This movie is really special to me. Saw it in theaters on a whim because I think I had Movie Pass at the time so I just saw everything that came out. And being in the theater with everyone else all of us stifling and crying at the end. It was really cool.

Eric Tanaka

Love love love that you guys did this movie! Made me so happy and I'm glad you both loved it so much. It's one of my favorite movies hard stop.

Bon Wa

OMG! I saw this on the poll a couple of weeks (maybe months?) ago and never ever thought I would actually see you guys react to this movie. I am so excited to share this one with you guys, one of my favorite films of all time and I usually dont watch anime at all

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

I’m usually more of an old school anime fan, but Makoto Shinkai is certainly a modern favorite and arguably has a more accessible body of work than a majority of classics outside of Studio Ghibli. Since y’all enjoyed this I hope y’all can check out his movies after “Your Name”: “Weathering with You” and “Suzume”, and for his earlier work, “5 Centimeters per Second”. And for some personal favorites: “Redline”, “Millennium Actress”, and “Maquia” are all pretty dank.

Gary Fixler

Notes as I go... I love the juxtaposition of teenage angst set against the most beautiful backdrops imaginable. My first thoughts after the grandmother says she's normal today were that she's somehow changing places with the boy on the other side of the world, but we only sleep 8 hours, and are awake 16... So maybe part of the day? I'm excited to find out. The note to herself in her notebook reminded me of a thread on Reddit a long time ago, where a guy kept finding notes not in his handwriting, and other weird things, so he set up a camera, but it kept getting deleted. A person in the thread told him to get a carbon monoxide tester, so he did, and it was way high; he had been losing his mind and doing it all himself. If it wasn't a hoax, the Redditor saved his life. I'm also reminded of a 1-season show from... checks Google... 2008, My Own Worst Enemy, with Christian Slater. He plays a secret agent who doesn't know he's one (like Jason Bourne), and then the agent needs his (i.e. his own) help, and starts leaving himself messages. It was fun idea. Ooh, weaving. I got crazy into the fiber arts in 2018—knitting, crochet, eventually spinning yarn, and looked a lot into weaving, which can get amazing (look up Lea Albaugh's very technical, and fascinating talks on it, "It's Just Matrix Multiplication": Notation for Weaving, From Text to Textiles!, and "Languages for 3D Industrial Knitting"). I have a friend who does band weaving, and she's way into it. She part of some group that goes through the whole learning process of some indigenous group's band weaving, through all the ages that group experiences; I remember when she was showing her "5-year old work". I don't know how "old" she is currently. Oh, and the thing the girl was doing, overlapping the strings on the board is called kumihimo. I met some women from a guild doing that at a weaving and fiber fest on foam boards you can buy, and I've watched YouTube videos on how to do it. It's like numbered, radial spokes, and you follow patterns of how to move yarns across, and the sequences make all kinds of designs. I love finding this kind of stuff. Bobbin lace weavers are basically thread elementals, or maybe threadbenders. It looks impossibly difficult. That may be what Simone was talking about. Sending this before I accidentally delete the whole thing.

Gary Fixler

Okay, he's on the date she set up for him, and I have a weird, very loose theory, which is probably wrong, but I'm wondering if they're not in the same time period. She lives such a traditional life, it's conceivable she lived, say, the last time the comet came by, but certain things feel off, like that she not amazed by modernity/cell phones, etc.. If it were the case, they just went to the shrine, and left that urn, and I could see him going to find it in a long future. Probably a stupid idea. Edit, 1 minute later: he just saw her area in an exhibit titled "Nostalgia." Hmm...

Trevor S Bright

Thank you Simone!!! Finally someone else other than me likes "The Lake House". I thought I was weird or something.

Soup

A Silent Voice is another great anime movie you should watch!

Mr. Treat

Is that really what studio ghibli does? Wow thats so unnecessary 😅 vindictive much?!

XaMas Koloss

now u startet this movie you have to watch the following movies "Wathering with you" and "Suzume" pls. All 3 are amazing animations in the same universe.
