Oh man, I really thought George was going to be the bear in the thumbnail, that would have been funny

I hope you guys can react to Inarritu’s previous film, Birdman, starring Michael Keaton. It’s much more of a fun comedy drama and less dour than The Revenant that has a fun satirical take on the comic book genre. Plus it’s meant to look like it’s one continuous shot the entire movie. Feel like that’ll be a fun movie for you guys to react.

Dang it, thought this was ravenous for a second.

Wrencher86

That would have made my day, honestly. But The Revenant is also good. That bear attack is nuts!

The director of The Babadook, Jennifer Kent, made a movie called The Nightingale that outclasses this film in every way. Absolutely brutal tale about revenge, one of my favorite movies.

Trevor Rotan

After years of being snubbed, Leo literally had to almost filming himself almost dying to get the award he’s probably deserved a few times over by then.

Kaushik Sethunath

I echo sentiments that Birdman is worth a watch! Inaritu and Lubezki are on top form in that movie too, the cast is spectacular, and the satirical/black comedy aspects of it make it a very entertaining watch, with actors bringing their A game acting as actors lol.

Mikeo8575

Filmed primarily in Alberta with some stuff shot in B.C. I believe the bear attack was filmed in Squamish.

jim Howe

I physically can't watch the bear scene in this film. Properly terrifying

Dan Holmes

Same Cinematographer as Children of Men :) Same Director as Birdman ;)

Spencer

Not even close imo. Maybe in story, but this film is a technical marvel and earned the shit out of its Best Director and Cinematography Oscars..

Randell Paszt

you guys should watch Babel it is the same director. It wont ever win a movie poll as it is one of those hidden gem movies that flew under the radar. so just watch it on your own.

David Nesbit

My parents took me with them to see the original, “Man In The Wilderness” when I was only seven years old. That was back in 1971. It starred Richard Harris in basically the same role that Leo plays. The bear attack was just as brutal for a film from that era.

About greenery in the mouth: I don’t know exactly what it means in this movie, but North American tribes would put tobacco or herbs in the mouth of the deceased as part of the burial ritual. About raw liver: In winter, there’s a sharp deficiency of vitamin C, which can lead to scurvy and a painful death. However, vitamin C can be obtained from raw liver. It should not be subjected to heat treatment, as the vitamin will break down, and the liver will just become meat.

If you're interested, The Dollop podcast has an amazing episode of the real story of Hugh Glass. They recorded it before the movie and it's hilariously sad.

Tom M

Watched it for the first time before seeing this reaction. It’s too damn long. And IMO I’d rather just watch castaway and a revenge flick double feature.

Andrew

The book is very different from the movie, but if you're readers, it's definitely worth it. Hugh Glass was a fucking animal. The primary difference between the real story of Hugh Glass and this movie is that, in reality, he was just trying to get his stolen shit back. The father/son relationship was created for the film. He traveled like, a hundred miles after being gravely injured by a grizzly bear tracking the thief (Hardy's character in the movie) just to get his guns and gear back. It's a great read. Made me feel like a pussy, lol.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

I hope y’all can check out “Society of the Snow” for more recent experiences of human survival amongst hostile terrain.

fadyq1326y1

wait, holdup, even if im late to comment on this, i have to take oportunity to bully George here. Did you just ask if Leo did Titanic before or after wolf of wall street? only by fucking 20 years lol

Remember that Jim Bridger - played by Will Poulter- has a Direct descendant in another movie, Lt. Aldo Raine played by Brad Pitt.

Jay Johnson

during the trivia portion at the end, George reads something about "Tom Hardy doesn't read scripts", and it seemed like y'all thought that it meant that he didn't read scripts at all. I'm thinking it was more about reading scripts for prospective movies to decide what he wants to work on. I'm fairly sure that once he signs on for a role, he'll read the script.
