Jihad Lee

Leo’s first Oscar win…from a movie I didn’t think he did all that great in. Still a good movie. Took a very poor Oscar year for him to finally win best actor. Should have won years before this.

Amar

Most realistic bear attack in a movie. I thought Di Caprio deserved an Oscar before this movie but when he did win for this film the whole auditorium stood up and kept applauding in appreciation for one of the best of our generation.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Can be a hard watch but man that bear attack is insanely well done. Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu and the cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki are still cagey about how they pulled it off, which is great. Shot in natural light too. Great performances (Hardy in particular). Definitely an experience as much as a film 😊

Big MCD

The feel-bad movie streak begins!

Odd Thomas

Honestly I'll take Revenant, Dragon Tattoo and Babadook over crappy Wayan brothers comedies any day

Odd Thomas

George stealing jokes like Amy Schumer, lol

REDR58

Ah, some light Thursday night viewing. Gah. Good luck with it Simone! I’m not sure indeed to see this again anytime soon.

Jon Johns

By no means is the film, "Jeremiah Johnson" as intense, or 'good' as this film, (Both are in my top ten favs) but it is a lovely film of its time, and worth a watch. Robert Redford chose the Sundance area of Utah to film, and later created the Sundance film festival, and a film school and institute on site. A simple film, with a small cast, Jeremiah Johnson is also (loosely) based on real people, and events. The community here can back me up, or refute me 😉.

Jon Johns

I am always astounded when I see dilated pupils on the cast during close ups. Masterful cinematography.

Odd Thomas

The shooting style is very reminiscent of Terrence Malick films; the long shots of nature, the spiritual voice-over. The Tree of Life is my favourite of his, followed by The Thin Red Line.

PIG

I saw this in a crowded theater when it came out, not knowing what it was, and I was very impressed. I do, however, regret not yelling out the word “Doh!” in the theater when the bear lands on Leo, though.

beecroft adams

Hell or high water, Barton Fink, Frank, Copland, The Castle, Little Shop of Horrors and Honey I Shrunk the Kids.

Odd Thomas

Tom Hardy was a major pain in the ass on Fury Road apparently. Theron hated him because he kept showing up late. The next Leo watch should be The Aviator.

Brad Lowry

The list of movies where Leonardo DiCaprio deserved a nomination/win is long. He was one of the youngest actors to get a nomination for "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" (please add to your backlog). I think the moment where 15 old Frank Abginale Jr. figures out that his mother is cheating on his father in "Catch Me If You Can" was worth it alone! I really recommend you see the movie where Leonardo DiCaprio is the lead actor and Robert De Niro is the supporting actor. It is THE must see in his filmography! ...what movie is that, you ask? Most people don't even know such a movie exists: "This Boy's Life", a biopic of the young life of writer Tobias Wolf and is an unbelievable performance for the very young Leo head-to-head with the all time great De Niro.

Amelie W

Definitely, in its strong realist style, the most spectacularly violent movie I've seen. I'd rather watch Tokyo Gore Police again. . .

Mr. Writhms

Industrial Light and Magic did the CGI for that bear. Wow! That looked real! If you have to use CGI, you get those people. Damn, they're good.

Ph4ZeD

I watched this in the cinema. Everyone was shellshocked after it ended.

Harry Fieldson

I read during the credits as you guys were talking about your thoughts that one of the stunt doubles for Leo was called Jason Glass. The book characters seems to also have been called Glass so it's just a fun coincidence.

PureGonzo

Lol, you have to at least admit that the Scary Movie films (at least the first two) are fun. Nobody’s claiming they’re Oscar-worthy or masterpieces of cinema by any stretch of the imagination, but they’re well done and accomplish what they set out to do – to make people laugh :)

Drew

Fun fact: my brother was mauled by a bear while hunting deer. And years later when he saw this movie, he said it went just like this (except it was a 300lb black bear, and he didn’t get raked across the back). But the charge, the tumbling down a ravine, and the bear falling on him all happened 12yrs ago

D. T. Nelson

No. Glass doesn't die at the end. Remember the message he whispers to his son in the beggining (and the message is repeated throughout). "As long as you can still grab a breath, you fight. You breathe. Keep breathing."

Alec S

While not something I would re-watch too many times, this was probably one of the best visual experiences I ever had, really glad I got to see this in all its IMAX glory. The scenery alone was worth the price of admission. The real Hugh Glass lived to be almost 50 years old, and he didn't die of his woulnds or poor health, but rather was shot and killed by another Indian tribe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Glass

Justin James

You really gotta watch "Birdman" by the same director. Will Poulter who played Bridger is also in the excellent comedy "We're the Millers" alongside Jason Sudeikis.

Spencer Wattamaniuk

He almost died filming this movie haha. It all depends on the role though. How would a better performance look to you?

David S

Leo was great in the Aviator, but the performance of that movie goes to Cate Blanchett for channeling Katherine Hepburn... I think she won an oscar for it, if I remember correctly. Great film .

Philipp Roensch

It is a long gore-fest, but also so full of beauty. As you noted several times, I too feel like nature and the endurance of the spirits that kepts Glass going is a strong theme in this movie. I love how matter of fact the survival and losses on all sides are, no mistake possible, a great challenge the filmmakers took and it payed off.

E. D.

Just watched it. What a movie. Great acting, great score. I like how some nature shots, flash backs and voice over remind me of Malick‘s movies, especially The Thin Red Line. ps: I somehow didn‘t recognize Domhnall Gleeson ps2: glad we could see the cute kitten

Monica Alarcon

Well now you've done the trifecta with a movie of each of the three amigos, Mexican directors Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men), Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) and Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu (The Revenant). From 2013 to 2019 these three won every Best Director Oscar (Except in 2016) I hope you watch more of their movies and, probably unlikely, but I wish you would watch something from their pre-Hollywood careers (Y Tu Mamá También, Amores Perros and Cronos).

FranciscoGios

Damn you guys stealing each others Thunder is well done. 😜👍

Jesse Coombs

This movie kind of reminds me of Terrance Malick's "The New World". Although not as gory and more spiritual. A highly-recommended movie.

warcrimes

HAHA THE MINDKILLER, YOURE SO FUNNY GEORGE!

Grumblefunk

Good call on Malick, I rewatched his first film Badlands (1973) recently, forgot how good it is, and wondered if any of his movies would interest S or G, maybe New World or Melancholia but his movies may not make for interesting youtube 'content' and likely would never win a poll here. Same with Lars von Trier or Gaspar Noe films

zak

If you guys want to see another tense, brutal, western, I would HIGHLY recommend Bone Tomahawk, great script, wonderful cast, and probably the only film I've ever seen listed as a western/horror

Robinson vs. Parkinson's

LOVE this film. For the love of The All-Father, please put The Last of The Mohicans on a poll. Similar time-setting, Michael Mann directing, Daniel Day-Lewis. Nuff said.

David Melo

The "doesn't read scripts" thing about Tom Hardy could just mean about getting pitched scrips. Many actors are given scripts before choosing to sign on to a movie. I don't think is that he shows up to sets and doesn't know his lines. I don't think Christopher Nolan would appreciate stuff like that.

Jeff I.

As much as I love this movie, the setting of it in terms of where they filmed momentarily took me out of it a few times. Like it's supposed to be set in South Dakota, but I immediately recognized the landscape and trees as further north into Canada (they filmed mostly in the Banff area IIRC). If they actually filmed in the part of South Dakota where the real story took place, it'd be open plains with few trees and certainly no mountains. Ha

Jesse Coombs

I believe Melancholia is Lar von Trier, not Malick, but yeah it would be an interesting reaction. Weirdly, I think Dogville might be more accessible because of it's gimmick. As far as Malick, maybe The Thin Red Line is the easiest to get into. Badlands would be great too.

Martin

One of the best reactions you guys have ever done. The look of pure horror on Simone’s face and George’s gape-mouthed fascination during the bear scene was…(chef’s kiss)

Efrain Zavala

OK so you,ve watched this movie by Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu and Children of Men by Alfonso Cuarón. I would recomment you watch "Birdman" (2014), also by González Iñarritu, "Gravity" (2013) by Cuarón, and "The Shape of Water" (2017) by Guillermo del Toro. All great movies by Mexican directors.

Shane Darcy

I cant imagine Simone watching that “one scene”. That alone probably eclipses everything else they’ve watched in terms of violence

Logan Kerlee

This reaction was flat amazing! I wrote a book of a comment as the movie was playing but I'm not going to post it because I feel that'd be rude. xD I just want you guys to know that I had one hell of a great time watching this with you both! So much fun. This was my first time watching as well. :) This movie deserves all of the awards because damn, it was good stuff!

Logan Kerlee

100% Jon, it's crazy! The fact that this was all shot in natural light is astounding. This movie deserved that award.

Logan Kerlee

lmao, I hear you PureGonzo but this was an excellent watch through and through. Tonight I'll fall asleep thinking of that bear attack, 100%.

zak

Oof yeah, I can imagine the look of shock on her face, I consider myself well acquainted with violent films, but I believe I did audibly gasp at that moment

Logan Kerlee

The other night I called my dad to ask about the question's George and Simone had about thee movie. He called me this morning to tell me that "it was filmed in Northern Montana and bits of Canada." lol, sorry I'd of thought that he'd have more/better info than that. :P :)

Jay Davis

I honestly thought this movie was just about a guy who gets et by a bar so I had no interest in ever watching it. And I likely never would've had y'all not watched it. Thanks. It was pretty good.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Gotta agree with Jihad Lee, people misconstrue a physically demanding role with a well done performance. Which if that were the case, Tom Cruise’s shelves should be lined with Oscars due to all the stunt work he puts into his roles. I think Leo had better performances in “Django Unchained”, “Revolutionary Road”, “The Departed” or “Killers of the Flower Moon” than in this movie. Although I’m still captivated by the struggle in Hugh Glass’s story, it’s more because of the spectacle and craft in this film than Leo’s acting.

Ricardo Alanis

I slept on this movie when it came out and now I wish I hadn’t. Great watch-along! I would recommend The Grey and Roma for different reasons. One for survival tale, one for a hispanic director’s brilliant use if visual storytelling.

Dioskur

Thats a joke only a genius like George can come up with! 11/10
