Clerks was one of the movies my friends group always had on playing in the back ground. For better or worse it had a huge impact on informing my humor style.

“In a row??”

SuPaTiLt

That is absolutely why the locks have gum in them, shooting at night. Also, Randall was the guy who sold Matt Damon the gun in the 'Mass genocide vs Soccer' scene in Dogma. Also also, in the bar near the end of Dogma, Dante is the news reporter on the tv when they show what's happening at the church. Not the same characters, just blanking on actors names.

jmundt33a

Is the original ending better?

jmundt33a

It’s the characters he wrote for himself and his best friend. Pretty simple. And a shoutout. Well…this is awkward.

This is why I can’t hear the number 37 without laughing a bit. “In a row?” — One time they were yelling out order numbers for customers at some restaurant. They yelled out 37. And when the customer didn’t start walking up and the guy repeated “37” three or four times, two different people half-yelled out “In a row?” Sadly, I wasn’t quick enough on the uptake that time.

I can’t wait for Clerks 2! The best in the series

Ryan Alexander

Great start, now you need to watch Clerks 2 and 3

Robbie Corrie

Welcome to the beginning of the Askewniverse. You could in theory skip to Clerks 2 but since you watched Dogma out of sequence, it pays to watch the others due to recurring characters and actors appearing in other films in the same universe

Matt88g

Jay was based on the actor who played him jason mews who was one of Kevin smiths best friends from high school, all the other characters were just actors they found, so it was easy to put himself and his best friend in all the movies.

Henry Sanchez

The View Askew Universe is essentially a neighborhood. Jay and Silent live in the neighborhood and find themselves around difference situations within the neighborhood. They’re the link for the movies within the universe. So after 4 movies, they finally got their solo adventure (followed by a sequel years later).

Adam Wetstein

How do you guys have time to watch all this stuff. Are you legs atrophying?

Sergio Meira

I'm watching movies with S&G, and I'm NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE HERE!

Elroy

You guys should add Brother bear (2003) to the list

Richard Burrell

I’m pretty sure Kevin Smith said that the whole film is a tongue in cheek reference to Dante’s Inferno and the 9 circles of hell. There are a lot of references that can relate with the main character Dante being the obvious one!

Kenneth thomas

The documentary about the making of Clerks called "The Snowball Effect" that was on the Clerks X DVD is really fantastic. About how Kevin Smith maxed out all his credit cards and sold his comic collection to make this movie at the store he worked at, and how it went from one person in the audience at a film festival to one of the biggest indie movies ever. Really interesting and inspiring. It's on youtube! Snowball Effect: The Story of Clerks

thomas king

The View Askew Universe!

mcfierce24

The woman playing the "milkmaid" is Kevin Smith's mother.

thomas king

Mallrats is next in the View Askew Universe. Watch the version released in the theatre. The extended version is horrible. The theatre version is a blast

Liz Matter

You should watch An Evening with Kevin Smith. He talks about how he and Jason Mewes beame friends and the making of Clerks. It is really funny.

Justin P Fivecoat

Kevin Smith wanted a way to showcase Jay) Jason mewes because he thought he was funny, so then he added himself as silent bob to give him someone to play off of

Justin P Fivecoat

Mallrats, chasing Amy, Jay and silent bob strike back, clerks 2 , Jay and silent bob reboot then clerks 3... it's worth diving into the whole series of view askew movies.

Ryan Skinner

During Randall's distribution center phone call, I was really hoping George was going to chime in jokingly with "Oh I worked on that one!" :D

JBK405

Ah, i love this movie. Commenters above already touched on it, but the reason Jay & Silent Bob stuck around (Apart from just being the writer/director and his best friend) is because they're always supporting characters in somebody else's story. Except for the actual jay & Silent Bob movies (Which came much later) there's a different main character and primary story in all of the films. They all just happen to meet/know/hang around with Jay & Silent Bob because they all take place in the same area. Dogma was the first to make them part of the main plot because they'd already become meme-famous after Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy, and even then they were still sidekicks.

This flick is just a perfect snapshot of my life when I was 23 in the early 90's ..from the job to the relationships to even the language

Adam K

My mom rented this movie at the recommendation of the jackass at the movie rental store. So it was my mom, my dad, and 15 year old me sitting around the TV on a Saturday night watching this movie. Needless to say, after the snowball scene we turned it off, but the trauma of that experience will live with me forever.

Wrencher86

Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy are the New Jersey Trilogy, as it's been called. They each have a pretty different vibe but are certainly worth your time. Chasing Amy is probably the best of the three, Mallrats has the best laugh-to-runtime ratio and Clerks has the best jokes (In a row?!).

Trevor Rotan

Jay and SB are the chroniclers of the storylines in the Jersey trilogy. They know all the characters because everyone buys weed from them and see them at the Quick-stop. It’s not their story, but they always provide help or necessary insight to the main characters for their arc. They are the Obi-wan or Yoda of the the characters’ Star Wars adventure, or the Gandalfs of the middle earth books.

Eric Wilson

You should consider watching the clerks cartoon. Its only like 6 episodes

Pepijn Schmitz

Also check out the various "An Evening With Kevin Smith"s. He tells some fantastic stories in a really funny way. "Because he's Prince..." 😂

Will Sofer

That’s not Dante. It is, however, (canonically) his cousin. And obviously that’s not Randall in the gun shop, though I assume you just meant it was the same actor.

Will Sofer

I wouldn’t recommend watching this, however, until they’ve watched all of the films. Tons of spoilers.

Mike FromOz

This got me to up my subscription from TV to Movies here 😁 For those who weren't alive at the time, this was a perfect distillation of the 90's. Gen X was basically hidden under the weight of all the cultural product for the boomers. There wasn't a whole lot on which reflected the reality of our lives. This was great because it showed the regular kinds of things we were doing together in our own small groups - working shitty jobs, watching video tapes, talking and arguing about movies and hanging out watching the promise of what life could be slip away. Since the internet was very much in its young stages, and wasn't nearly as widespread it is today, social media wasn't around to show what the new thing was to spread around. You had to go on stuff you read in magazines, or music videos on tv. This movie showed us around the world that we were actually really quite alike. Myself and my Australian mates used to watch this a lot. A really fantastic movie, and absolutely brilliant opening effort by Kevin Smith.

Awesome reaction ☺️

“In a row “ is one of my favorite lines. I say it all the time to see if anyone picks it up.

Dylan9Lives

Can't wait until you guys get to Clerks 3 to see the reaction. There aren't many on YouTube.

BoredLittleLady

I believe this to be a safe space for me to share that the only Kevin Smith movie I’ve seen is “Live Free or Die Hard” aka Die Hard 4.

Jay Johnson

"Clerks" is Kevin Smith's "Android Night Punch"
