Im not even supposed to be here today!

djKENTO

my favorite moment in the whole movie is “you’re not allowed to rent here anymore” and then jay just yells “YEAHHHHHHH”

JayF

In a row?

sol stapleton

Well you now have the whole veiw asquneverse.

djKENTO

also quick reminder if you continue this journey, do it in release order. These characters and their stories overlap from movie to movie. It’s like Comedy MCU. Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks 2, Jay & Silent Bob Reboot and then finally Clerks 3. There’s a studio movie he made with Seth Rogen called Zack and Miri Make a Porno which has since been retroactively inserted into the continuity but not in a way that matters much.

Jay Davis

I'm not even supposed to watch this today!

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Well I hope George’s jaw is all good now 🙏😌 Also…man, the View Askewniverse was the original cinematic universe of my era’s elementary/high school era. Definitely recommend checking out “Mallrats” up to “Clerks 2” in the very least. Nearly all are necessary for “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” which is a riot and a half.

Brandon

I'm not even kidding when I say I finally had enough and walked out on my job last night. Seeing this pop up in my notifications kind of makes me feel like I did the right thing. 😆

E. D.

lol my copy has an animated scene that shows what happens at the funeral, it‘s a 1:39:30 version

BubblyRainbows

A video store. For rentals. That you had to go get physical tapes or DVDs from. The past was weird and inconvenient!

FWPJR.

I still haven’t seen this movie and I don’t know why I haven’t lol I’ve only heard great things about it, plus it came out around the time I was really into watching a lot of movies ( I’m not into watching new movies now ) so I think I’ll watch this with you two so I can finally watch this movie and see if I feel the same way as the other people who say how great it is feel about it. Then I can watch the sequel after this

FWPJR.

I miss renting movies from video stores so much, picking one and watching it on a streaming service doesn’t even compare to leaving the house and going to the store and hoping someone else didn’t rent the movie you wanted to rent lol and it might’ve been “weird” and “inconvenient” ( I didn’t think it was ) but I wish I could go back and relive it all over again

djKENTO

Jay & Silent Bob stay characters in the films because it’s easy and comfortable for Kevin. And he gets to give Jay work and for a while… it’s the only work Jay could get. In Mallrts, the next film, which takes place the day prior to this movie, there is a LOT more Jay & Silent Bob and that’s where they really took off. A lot of Kevin’s friends are in this movie. His mom is the milk maid, the egg guy runs his comic book shop and the personal trainer helps run the movie theater Kevin bought and restored in his home town.

Adam Barry

You really need to watch all the View Askewniverse films in order to see all the characters and worldbuilding change over time. Plus watching Mallrats next would be appropriate now with the recent passing of Shannen Doherty.

Casey Dixon

The woman who knew about the Guidece counselor was played by Kevin Smith's sister. The order of the movie don't matter to much besides the number sequels, the only real connection it Silent Bob and Jay played by Kevin Smith and his best friend Jason Mews.

ContinuousXIII

I spent year running multiple music programs across multiple school districts. Everything from band to musical theater. I had a team of 8 music teachers and over 400 students and I did that for years. Taking time off to take a break before going back into the music world, I am genuinely LOVING service industry, its so relaxed compared to what I did

sol stapleton

The order to these films is clerks, mallrats, chasing amy, dogma, Jay and silent bob strike back, clerks 2, Jay and silent bob reboot and clerks 3

kbobravo

Please continue the Jay and Silent Bob universe (or viewaskewniverse) all the way to Clerks 3. Clerks Mallrats Chasing Amy Dogma Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back Clerks 2 Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (the only one I'll say is optional) Clerks 3

beefjerkywizard

Best intro of all time. Please more recorder covers

DM DC

So this might be a bad time to recommend Little Shop of Horrors 1986 with Rick Moranis from Ghostbusters. It's a great film. I would also recommend seeing Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and then Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Then Clerks 2. In that order.

Martin

37?!?

MatthewBrown74m

This movie is very relatable to me.I work at vons Grocery store. work for the company for thirteen years I am a courtesy clerk. Basically, I bag the groceries and bring in the carts in I've dealt with Narcissists, Very loud, impatient, Nitpicking, Reuse bag organizers, Complain about prices, Customers. And to answer your question NO I DONT LIKE IT AT ALL LOL All I needed was the benefits 😌 😅

JakeToll

You know there's a million fine looking women in the world dude, but they don't all bring you lasagna at work. Most of them just cheat on ya.

Elvenwitch

While they are not always the main character Jay and Silent Bob are the thread that ties the Askewaverse together. It is much better to watch in chronological order as Geoge said there is some form of continuity along the line.

Dioskur

Missed chance to publish this on another date, when its not supposed to be here

Vwlss Nvwls

Randal was certainly the best character of the movie. And the soundtrack is well worth the money or listen, if for nothing else but the Chewbaca song. ;) There is an alternate ending where Dante is closing up, and another person comes in to rob him, then ends up shooting and killing Dante. I think we can guess why they did not use that ending.

Vwlss Nvwls

When you watch Mallrats, then you will see why Jay & Silent Bob became so big. Also, if you did not already know, Kevin Smith played Silent Bob, and Jason Mewes (his life long friend) plays Jay.

Vwlss Nvwls

If you are going down the View Askew rabbit hole, the proper order is Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II, Jay & Silent Bob Reboot, Clerks III. The Clerks t.v. show was a cartoon that was awesome, but was canceled fairly quickly. I have never seen the Jay & Silent Bob Groovy Cartoon Movie.

Odd Thomas

Mallrats, Dogma, and particularly Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back are peak Kevin Smith. After that it's all pretty awful, though I do have a soft spot for Yoga Hosers, lol

StarvinTheKids4Patreon

Another fun fact would be that the original ending was way bleaker were after Randal left a robber would quickly storm into the store and shoot Dante.

Odd Thomas

The only people in retail who like retail are managers because they get to push people around

Monica Alarcon

Please continue in the ViewAskewniverse, and don't skip Mallrats

MikeBdrx

I know this is the dumbest comment on this post today but did Simone get a tan or is my tvs color off? lol

Duke Running

All of George’s dental work would cost around $12,000 in America.

Ricardo Alanis

I wholeheartedly agree with going through the ViewAskewniverse movies. There are a couple of non-ViewAskewniverse movies out there directed by Kevin Smith. My favorite is Red State, which has one of my favorite endings.

Ricardo Alanis

Also, you'll never hear the number 37 and not think "in a row?" moving forward.

Brian's Dog

Yeah, this is the best order of viewing. Mallrats is great, only one converted to 4k so far too I think.

Owenrock1221

Kevin Smith plays Silent Bob so thats a good reason why those were the characters chosen. Also Dante and Randal are in Clerks 2,, Clerks 3 and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The two actors also have roles in the rest of Kevin Smith's movies. Kevin Smith is brilliant with dialogue and I love his movies. He also has done like 4 DVD's of him doing Q&A at colleges and those too are hilarious. Hes one of the bet storytellers

Drew

Kevin Smith described them as “the R2-D2 and C-3PO” of his universe

james repka

When you think about it, of course it's in a row -- the alternative is simultaneously.

james repka

You are right about how the movie was shot while the convenience store was closed. It was where Kevin Smith worked while making the film. His boss allowed him to film during off hours. He paid for everything by maxing out his credit cards, I think it cost ~$16,000. Half of the budget was for the music rights. The original ending had a guy burst through the door after Randall left to rob the place and kill Dante.

BigGuy209

When you guys watch Mallrats because that’s the next one. Can you please not watch the extended cut. It’s not good. just watch the Theatrical version it’s 1hr 34min.

Kevin Rogers

You guys have to watch Clerks 2, its wild

Steve Mercier

Randal: Jesus, that seems to be the late motif in your life - ever backing down. Dante: I don't back down. Randal: You always back down! You come in on your day off, you assume responsibility that isn't yours - you buckle like a belt. Dante: You know what the worst part is? Randal: The fact that I'm right about your buckling? Dante: That I'm gonna miss the fucking game! Randal: Because you buckled. Dante: Will you shut up with that shit, man. It ain't helping. Randal: Aw, don't yell at me, pal. Dante: Sorry. Randal: See? There you go again.

Stephanie Bedworth

Clerks 2 is definitely worth watching and the Clerks animated series is actually pretty good.

Tomas

On the topic of nudie booths, you should watch The Boondock Saints

Tyler Polzin

Aww shit, View Askew, here we go! Ya'll better do these in order! Don't even bother with a poll -- one movie a month!

Farbod

Clerks 2 is solid. Def worth seeing. Clerks 3 however might be the worst film I have ever seen, and this is coming from a big Kevin Smith fan.

Rileymetal

Watch Mallrats and Chasing Amy next THEN Clerks 2

IncredibleBulk

i worked in retail many years ago in a place called "must have it" which was basically a gadget shop in the UK. most fun i ever had in a job. typically the people coming in were "nerdy" so generally nicer people i found and i got to spend the whole shift playing with gadgets, showing people how things worked. side benefit there was a millies cookies stall just outside our door and they gave us staff cards so money off cookies whenever i wanted

Hi I'm George Junior, but my friends call me Geo-Ju

🖤Yeah, the thing about Jay and Silent Bob being perceived by you two as main characters is just mainly because you watched Dogma, where they are main characters, and then you two knowing they have their own movie (and a somewhat sequel to that). They were only minor characters in these movies in the beginning and sort of became fan favorites. I think Dogma was the first movie where they were considered the main cast (I think?), then the Jay and Silent Bob movie I wanna say was the next movie, and they've just remained the faces of the whole "View Askew" universe. Clerks 2 is well into the era of their popularity so they're in that one quite a bit. Fun fact, that guy in this movie who played multiple roles, he manages Kevin Smith's comic book store in New Jersy (called The Secret Stash I believe) and there was a reality show about it called "Comic Book Men" so every time I would see him in this movie it was easy for me to recognize him as the same person. If you haven't seen that show, his characters do sort of just blend in LOL.

Paul mix

Howard Shore, eat your heart out!

Simone's Coconut Squire

Whatever you say about this movie, it's the best $30,000 spent in cinema history. It still boggles my mind that that was the budget on this film.

Martin

The order to watch the movies: 1. Clerks 2. Mallrats 3. Chasing Amy 4. Dogma 5. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back 6. Clerks II Those 6 movies are basically all you need from the View Askew universe.

G P

As others have said, you should watch them in the release order

Matthew Blackwood

The animated series, if you can find it, is one of the funniest things ever made, just VERY different.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I love Kevin Smith's work but of all he's done, these characters are my favorites, along with the characters you meet in Clerks 2, Elias and Rosario Dawson's character, and I'm curious how you guys react to Randal's criticisms of LOTR, it's a real hot take lol. A word about Comic Book Men, I believe the show is done, but I loved it, it was a show about a comic book and memorabilia store that Kevin Smith owned and was run by his friends, including manager Walt Flanagan (the egg guy). It was a great show about comics and the shenanigans the guys who worked there as clerks and some of their customers, including Bryan Anderson who Randal was actually based on and is a really funny guy with the same sort of punk cheekiness I guess you could call it. Anyway it was a fun little show and it was fun to see how all these guys from a smallish town in New Jersey get along, they remind me of me and my nerdy ass friends haha. Btw I currently work in retail but at a hardware store, and I actually kind of like it here, I've hated most retail jobs I've had, especially when I was manager (never doing that again), but where I am now I get along with most of my coworkers and most of my customers and I enjoy helping people and learning about stuff from contractors etc. I keep saying I'm going back to truck driving because the money is much better but it's hard to leave this job, trucking can get kind of lonely and I know I'm gonna worry about my dogs being cared for, so for now I'm here I guess. But I've had some shit jobs in retail, worst was a discount store in a really bad neighborhood, Big Lots in Rialto, California, I almost got stabbed there and literally fought purse snatchers and wannabe gangsters in the parking lot multiple times. Idk, I've met some "interesting" people in retail, so there's that.

Kevin Bartelen

That is in fact the place Kevin Smith was working at the time, and he asked his boss if he could film after hours, and that is in fact why the shutters had to stay closed. As for Jay and Silent Bob carrying on to other films, I suspect it has to do with the fact that Silent Bob is played by Kevin Smith himself, but I haven't heard anything for sure. Also the animated series is only 6 episodes because ABC screwed them, but it's a good watch if you guys want to check it out.

Shiby23

Why did Kevin smith choose to keep Jay and Silent bob... Because Kevin smith IS Silent Bob???? Why wouldn't he want to star in his own movies. Probably best friends with Jay's actor, why wouldn't you keep jamming with your best friend doing movies. I'm not sure if you're familiar with twitch streamerers but Maxamillion_Dood does a series called Assist Me on youtube. Super budget youtube videos which are this type of home made budget movie marvel fighting game sketches.

Philipp Roensch

Watching Kevin Smith movies in the same chronologically is good, you get more of the recurringcharacters and cameos. Kevin Smith is also a huge nerd, the reason why so many Star Wars, pop culture and comic references are flying around. Clerks 3 is just ok, but Mallrats is a fun 1+2, Jay and Silent Bob movies are a bit more special interest, they hinge on the JB humor and lots of in-jokes.

Morion Williams

They know Silent Bob is Kevin Smith right?

Mark Lecuyer

You should totally watch a majority of the Kevin Smith films. His phase 1 is: 1. Clerks 2. Mallrats 3. Chasing Amy 4. Dogma 5. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (I suggest watching all of these) then Phase 2: Jersey girl, Clerks 2; Zack and Miri make a porno, Cop Out and Red State. (not all fan favorites (a poll may be needed for some) and not all have a Jay/Silent Bob through line but, I feel, Clerks 2 & Zack/Miri should be watched) Phase 3: He went back to more lower budget films Tusk, Yoga Hosers, Kilroy was here along with Jay/Silent bob reboot & Clerks 3. (to be honest, I have only seen Clerks 3 in this bunch) I like all the Clerks movies... I do suggest giving yourselves time between watching them as the actors aging & us being re-introduced to them 12 years later (per Clerks2) is important to the story. Watching Kevin Smith films in order also shows his growth (some may argue not grow) as a filmmaker. Thanks for watching- Love Clerks & loved your reaction.

Amelie W

If you are deep enough in the tank for Kevin Smith to even consider watching Clerks 2, I submit you probably want to read his comic books as well. Even though reacting to books is a lot less of a market than movies.

Amelie W

13 minutes into the video, we are told that the version of the movie they're watching is the theatrical cut of 91 minutes. I think this information would be useful to have up front, but here we are.

Ricardo Alanis

I also recommend Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Not ViewAskewniverese but the actor that plays Randall is it and I think is a very funny movie in line with the others.

REDR58

The only thing that seems practical to do is when a movie is decided as the winner, George and Simone ask if and how many versions are there and which is the best version if it doesn’t come up already in the poll comments? I don’t know how they managed to find the Australian release of the Babadook, but it did not have subtitles. That was a little difficult to follow.

Lana Gorgeous

I worked as a Clerk for a convenient store chain in America called Wawa's. This movie is hilarious. I was a little disappoint in Clerks II. IN Clerks these guys look like typical 22 year olds', in Clerks II they look like middle age, much heavier, kind of beer belly, like they slowed down. It was funny, but no place as funny as Clerks. Clerks is a classic, so fresh. You should watch another Kevin Smith movie Chasing Amy. It's the movie he did I think right after Clerks. Chasing Amy is hilarious. I'd check that out before Clerks 2.

China Andronicus

I would never call Jay and Silent Bob main characters, other than their own films. They're basically just really fun supporting characters that reappear in all the films. But it's not surprising that they do have their own films, given that it's Kevin Smith and one of his best friends playing the two roles. I personally highly recommend Mallrats. That's my favorite Kevin Smith film.

Jonas Buckner

Chronologically is the best way to watch them. Every one of them has references to the previous films and build upon each other. The Clerks TV show is fantastic, but it can be watched in any location because it's just absurdist humor with no real connection to the movies other than the characters.

Jeff I.

Is it just me or does the actor playing Randall both look and sound like he's reading off a cue card or some kind of notes a lot? Especially for the longer scenes like the Star Wars conversation. It literally looks/sounds like he's reading from a cue card off to the side of the camera.

Ricardo Alanis

No joke, I’ve watched this reaction 3 times already. Loved your commentary, reactions to the classic lines, and not knowing what to expect next. Can’t wait for Mallrats!

Lopaka

Just wow....Listening to George tell his stories about working in customer had me rolling as I have seen Clerks and he could have wrote the script.

goddan

pulp

David Lonewolf Wright

Great reaction! Glad you enjoyed it. I do hope you continue down the View Askew Universe films. A lot of the names mentioned will be referenced through out his movies. Mallrats is a bit amateurish, but still a lot of fun with a great cameo. Chasing Amy is probably Kevin Smith's more mature films though it still has plenty of his ridiculous touches to it. You have already enjoyed Dogma. I haven't seen Clerks 3 yet, but would enjoy watching it with you guys.

Amelie W

It's disappointing that the characters aged 12 years in the 12 years that passes between the movies?

KatMakes

Watching this reaction was amazing. Do you guys have any plans for Clerks 2 and 3?
