Looking forward to this one, mikes acting at the end of ep6 is amazing and heartbreaking.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Haha taking a pause from replaying Elden Ring to rewatch these eps with everybody. “Five-O” is truly a Jonathan Banks showcase and absolutely worthy for his Emmy nomination. Also nice Comic Book Guy impression, George 👊

Noel Valdez

The laws aren't what matter. US Police can do a lot and not get in trouble. Cops here do things all the time that aren't legal but they never get checked here. Or when they do it's usually just a slap on the wrist. Also, cops will be good with rich people, but I could totally see cops breaking down a door because of "drugs". With the war on drugs here, cops are super aggressive to addicts and homeless. Idk how it is in Canada but US cops are overall pretty bad.

Cromulentius

You can tell that Jimmy is on some level playing along with Chuck's disease because he's spent so long needing his brother's support and this is a chance for him to flip the script and be the supportive one. Much like Breaking Bad, this show has a running theme about how the longing to feel valued, needed and respected can lead people down some strange paths.

Maiki

Mike is such a fascinating character. We had the discussion about him not being the good guy while watching Breaking Bad here and he of course still did what he did in BB, but this show adds so much depth to him. And i just love Jonathan Banks. What a gut-wrenching performance at the end of episode 6.

Brandon

There used to be a common stereotype that the favourite TV show of all senior citizens is Matlock, who always wore a light grey suit in court. So it's all part of Jimmy's subtle manipulation to gain elderly clients. I think The Simpsons probably played a huge part in it becoming a common joke about the elderly. It's pretty outdated now since the show's been off the air for 30 years, but this show takes place in the early 2000's when a lot of people would still remember it. I used to watch it as a really young kid with both of my Grandfathers so it's not exactly inaccurate. 😆

In most states in America, if the police have probable cause to think a crime is being committed, then they are permitted to take reasonable action. In this case, they figured there were drug addicts, or possible a drug lab inside the house, and as soon as he was requesting they leave weapons outside that was enough for them to think it was a dangerous situation. So yes, they kind of were at the right to bust down his door, though it can still be slightly questionable.

Alan Pownall

The fact this show didn't get any emmys is a crime, what a monologue.

Actuarial Lurker

Peter Dinklage won the Emmy against Banks- who was robbed. This may be one of the best episodes of BOTH BCS and BB

Actuarial Lurker

The Talking Toilet should lead to a call to Child Protective Services...

Actuarial Lurker

Now we see what kind of monster Walter White really was. Mike in Breaking Bad lived in a crappy house and did what he did just to send all the money from Gus to the safety deposit box for his granddaughter and Hank and Gomez seized all $3M, and then in Season 5 Walt just shoots him by the river over nothing instead of allowing him to find some way to get the $5M from the train robbery to his family....

Dustin

I think Peter Dinklage even said that Jonathan Banks should've won.

idrinkthere4iam

Mike was a monster for a lot longer than Walt. Mike admitted he’s the reason his son died. He killed people for revenge. He killed people because Gus wanted him too. Don’t ignore all the negatives of Mike and try to paint him as a lovely old man who tried to provide for his granddaughter. If he didn’t get his own son killed, then everything is different. Walt is a bad person but Mike and Gus and Hector, etc were worse.

Vwlss Nvwls

You laugh at the old lady, but the important thing to remember is that even at her age she is still enjoying life. George, never feel bad about what you think, only feel bad about what you do. What you think is your own business.

Zoltán Bublos

Which part are you in right now in ER? Me I just defeated the Fire Giant yesterday. First playthrough.

Allan Liebold

I'm picturing a court scene with Jimmy calling Tony the Toilet Buddy as a witness. Feels like something that would happen in a Phoenix Wright game.

Jeff K.

Gotta admit, in episode five when y'all were talking about Chuck suspecting Jimmy's shenanigans, part of me was hoping you'd land on the word "chicanery." (Not a spoiler since it's just a title, but G&S, arguably the best episode of the entire series is titled "Chicanery.")

Jay Willis

George loving the old lady scene was great. I remember that feeling the first time I saw it and just having that moment of realization like, "wait...why are we still on this shot? what are we doing? are we just going to sit here with Saul while he waits on this old lady?!"

Jay Willis

Mike breaking down over his son at the end always gets me. A strong older man who tries to exude toughness and grit in every moment of his life breaking down with emotion will always get me.

Cat with a Hairpiece

I love Five-O for the context it brings to Mike's relationship with Jesse. Every time he advised him to to do something better with his life or to get out before it was too late...you just know he was thinking of Matty.

Jeff K

Especially coupled with the fact that Jesse sort of filled a hole in a father/son sense for Mike. Closest thing he ever got to a second chance (not counting his granddaughter because that's obviously very different).

mraran

This show never won an Emmy Award. *repeat anytime you feel staggered by a Better Call Saul scene ** Peabody rules, Emmy's suck

Travis H

“I broke my boy” 😭 I wasn’t as high on BCS when it started (and I was wrong) so I don’t remember much of its first couple seasons, but I remember THAT scene. Seeing Mike break down for the first time just breaks me. A recurring bit in the comments will always be “this show won 0 Emmy’s”, but again 53 total nominations, ZERO WINS!

Jeff K

The fact that Rhea Seehorn never won an Emmy for this show is a fucking disgrace. Over her time on this show (trying to be vague), she gave one of the best TV performances I've ever seen. Like, hands down. She was INCREDIBLE.

Angzarr

Episode 5 was supposed to be called "Jello", following the theme, but sadly they were denied permission by the trademark owner to use that name.

JBK405

NO SPOILER, but building on your comment at the beginning 'I can't believe after all the drugs and violence we're seeing something this small' with Chuck and the newspaper, there's a memetic moment later in the series that had the entire fandom saying "I can't believe after all the explosions and violence and betrayals in Breaking Bad, the actual worst thing anybody does in the whole franchise is when XXX happens". The "small" things in this series are SO impactful. The thing with the elderly woman and the will is that, unlike the high profile/lucrative deals (Governmental law, patent law, etc.) this is something he ACTUALLY gets paid for. If he did two wills a $140 each, and we assume half-price for the living trust, that means he made $350.00 in one day. His very first day doing that, before his Matlock-costume and before he began trolling the nursing homes. If he keeps that up he'll make $1,750.00 a week, which comes out to $91,000.00 for the year. That's a good living. It may not be "rich", but it's REAL. All he has to do is keep working at this unglamorous, monotonous job full of of paperwork and forms. He won't get famous and he won't get to retire in five years, but he'll get to practice law and make money.

Angzarr

I thought the "no half measures" monologue in BB was peak Banks, until I saw this episode.

Ryan Skinner

I'm so amused that throughout this series so far, Simone has continued to use the moniker "Saul" whenever referring to the character, despite everyone calling him Jimmy. Then we get the scene with Mike and the Philly detectives; finally a perfect opportunity to use Saul's titular catch phrase, and she blurts out "Oh! He's gonna call Jimmy!" 🤣

Angzarr

But remember, he's not Matlock, he's a young Paul Newman _dressed_ as Matlock 😂

CD

Please listen closely: you guys are the best!

CD

Hmm. Peruse YT and watch a little body cam stuff. CRIMINALS are pretty bad “here” too.

Brian Sittler

Tweaker is slang for a meth addict.

Khan1001

Wow, the first season is way better then I remember, watching this again with you guys has been really great, so excited for you guys for whats to come! I think you may end up liking this more than BB?! Mike is the MVP, hes my favorite character as well, I was really bummed when Walt killed him in BB, but this show more than makes up for that! cant wait to see your faces for what happens later down the line! Also, the show will explain why Jimmy hates Howard so much, its not what you think and it will definitely change your thoughts/feelings about Howard after, Man! the writing/story in this show is top notch.

KM

I love how they address mental illness here. The fact that Chuck is basically a genius and an amazing lawyer doesn't mean he doesn't have a mental illness. And the fact that Chuck has a mental illness doesn't mean he's not a genius and an amazing lawyer. And yeah, cops get away with sh** all the time that they shouldn't get away with, and people with mental illness are way more likely than those without mental illness to be killed by cops even when they present zero threat.

KM

Peter Dinklage won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor for that year, and apparently even he was surprised that Jonathan Banks didn't get it instead.

Cartoons ReAct

The show was first on AMC weekly, then it was shown for streaming

An Inanimate Fucking Object

That’s a little bit of an oversimplification. They can break the door down without a warrant if there’s an imminent emergency/imminent danger or if they have probable cause evidence will be destroyed if they don’t do it. Sure, they might have an argument they were in the right but it’s far from clear cut and it’s not clear to me they’d actually win that argument in court. Then again, they are cops so they probably would win

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

I can’t believe BCS foresaw the brain rot of Skibidi Toilet, who would’ve thought? On a more serious note, never made the connection before that Jimmy bringing up the subject of Elder Law might have sparked the idea for Mike to plan some provisions for his family.

Justin Leone

Yeah, when accepting the award, he said that he didn't expect to win because he was awed by all the others' performances, to which he elaborated "Jonathan Banks... and the rest".

Redrum Sacrament

Kerry Condon, who plays Mike's daughter in law did the voice of Tony Stark's AI Friday in Avengers Age of Ultron, Captain America Civil War and Avengers Endgame while filming Better Call Saul. Also the new detective with the notepad, he was in The Mandalorian as the guy that was doing experiments. I may be looking too much into it, but I think Jimmy really wasn't going to spill his coffee until he heard the story about Matty and changed his mind. Trying to go straight and not be slippin Jimmy.

Robinson vs. Parkinson's

...and just like that, Mike Ehrmantraut joins my very short list of incredibly well-written characters.

Adam Wetstein

acting and writing, best in the series

Noel Valdez

I was more intentional with the first couple of seasons but as soon as I got to season 3 I started binging it like crazy. So I'm actually the opposite! Im more familiar with these seasons and I really am super excited to rewatch the final seasons a little more intentionally. Lol

Noel Valdez

I love both, but BCS is my favorite for sure. The slow build up really pays off big time by the ending seasons. Even though BB is has more actually big things happen something about this show makes the events have a lot more weight then it did in BB.

Deadly Ramon

Wait until the hosts discover Ernesto, the show's best supporting cast member (along with Huell).

James Wing

There were big breaks between seasons, el Camino delayed a season then covid happened and bobs heart attack changed the schedule of the last season. You had to be patient watching better call Saul when it was live, good times.

Rob Bob

one little thing I love is how some seasons have a theme or secret in their episode titles, something breaking bad did once in season 2, but never to that level again (737 Down Over ABQ, foreshadowing the plane crash). For season 1, every episode was supposed to end with "o", but episode 5 is a clear outlier. They tried to name it Jello, but they couldn't get the rights to use the name and switched it last minute. Rearrange the first letters of season 2's episodes to find another ;)

Redrum Ritual

One thing Jimmy is finding out the hard way is why "legit" lawyers have a professional office with secretaries, etc. Legit lawyers are not door to door salesman begging you to let them represent you. Jimmy is going about it the wrong way which explains his encounter with delusional one man country and toilet man. lmao I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought toilet man's invention was stupid and creepy lol. Clea Duvall looking amazingly beautiful. George Lopez made a joke on an episode of his first tv show in the 2000s that his boss has a real lawyer; not one that is riding on the same bus he is advertising on lol

Śéáń

Mike's speech was the moment I knew this show was going to be on par with BB.
