It's the movie with the chariot race

This was a Christian-themed novel first. Then a silent film, then this. Ye Olde Fanfic.

Actuarial Lurker

Very Homoerotic- that's why they make "gladiator movie" jokes in the movie Airplane

Actuarial Lurker

George- Ben Hur is not real- but representative of "rebels" who would have been fighting back at the time

Spacedone

"A Balm?! What are you givin' him that for? It's a dangerous animal!"

Yes, this movie is the archetypical Epic Movie. The story of Judah and his family is fictional, written in the 19th century. Now you need to watch "Hail, Caesar!", the Cohen Brothers movie that is a sendup/homage to 1950s Hollywood and which makes no sense if you haven't seen this movie specifically. "Ben" (בן‎) is a Hebrew word meaning "son of" when used in the name. Judah Ben-Hur means "Judah, son of Hur". Hur might be the name of Judah's literal father, or their family name. Purple as a color was not restricted only to the Emperor in Rome, it was worn in a lot of uniforms and by certain classes of people according to custom. It was an expensive color due to the requirements of the dye, so it was always associated with power and wealth and prestige. There was a certain TYPE of purple that was restricted only to the Emperor (Tyrian purple), but that was due to the costs and requirements to import it from far away. Those restrictions didn't come into effect until several centuries after this time period, towards the end of the 4th Century. This did have the de facto effect of largely banning purple from anybody else, since who wanted to take the risk of being mistaken for wearing the wrong type of purple or be accused of bucking the rules? Booooooo-urns!

The 1925 version is where over 100 horses were killed. Supposedly there were no horse injuries (or at least deaths) here. Stuntman Joe Canutt was injured (but not seriously, though it could have been way worse) when Ben-Hur is flung out of the chariot, which was not planned. That shot is in the movie.

22 minutes in- nice racist "African dance" for this 1950s classic movie

Actuarial Lurker

Balthasar is one of the three wise men who came to the Manger at the Nativity so the movie has him come back later to watch the Sermon on the Mount

Actuarial Lurker

In the BIG Chariot race the stunt man you see trampled WAS killed

Add Brother Bear (2003) to an animated poll it’s such a good movie👌

For a bit of maybe-it's-true-maybe-it's-just-a-rumor background, according to some people the writer and director told Stephen Boyd (Messala) that Messala and Judah had been lovers in their youth before Messala went away. They told Boyd to play the role as though he wanted to resume the relationship, and so Judah's rejection has even bigger impact as a romantic refusal in addition to a political refusal. That's why he takes it so extremely personally. Like I said, I can't vouch for this. I've only seen this repeated in I-heard-it-from-somebody-else-who-heard-it chains, so this may have just been made up whole cloth. There's also another layer, where some other I-heard-from-somebody-who-heard-it stories claim that the writer/director SAY they did it this way, but that other actors say this never actually came up on set. If true, it gives a great new angle to their relationship.

dudewheresmycar

This is a persistent rumour thats almost as old as the movie itself, but snopes.com says its not true.

Ben-Hur's budget was over $15 Million and it made about $149 Million... The film Won 11 Oscars including Best Actor, Best Director,, and Best Movie...

Happy Hanukkah

The main source for this claim is Gore Vidal, one of the principal scriptwriters. So there is an identifiable legitimate source for the claim. On the other hand, that source is Gore Vidal... :-)

2026-09-14 06:00 You didn't know Charlton Heston at all ? He was a really great actor... and a very problematic human being. Watch his interview by Michael Moore (on the National Rifle Association of America), for example... A recommendation : SOYLENT GREEN (with C. Heston, 1973)

"Very problematic" because his political beliefs are shared by the *other* half of the 300 million people in the country from you? And because he was one of 3 actors brave enough to say it? Get over yourself, this prejudiced political bullying shit doesn't belong here.

Keith Brown

Heston and Director William Wyler worked a couple years before this movie on an epic sized western "The Big Country" costarring Gregory Peck. You need to do a deep dive into Director William Wyler's movies . He has done every genre of movie in his 40 year career.

Peter Dillard

A true epic from the days of the big studios. No CGI so real stunts. You might want to try 'The 10 Commandments' for another biblical epic that also has Heston.

Steve D

Now you can understand the meaning of the saying, " bigger than Ben Hur" .

Simon Pegged Me

I love the thumbnail. Not only does Simone's face capture that 1950s style of acting, but it also captures that modern meme look of "He's behind me, isn't he?"

Robert Elliott

It’s great that you’re watching this movie, one of my favorites. You probably didn’t know that you both have seen Charlton Heston in True Lies he was the head guy on the Omega department with the eye patch and in Tombstone as the rancher that let Doc Holiday rest

Stache

I was gonna say in Tombstone

Talking about movies that hit on a deeper level, and are amazing in style and scope, is there any chance I could convince you both to watch a 1979 Soviet science fiction film directed by Andrei Tarkovsky called "Stalker"? The title makes it sound somewhat ominous (and on metaphysical levels, it kind of is), but it's not the kind of stalker you might be thinking of. I don't want to ruin it or give anything away, but it's one of the most amazing films in terms of style and philosophical thought I've ever seen, and gives you a lot to think about. I know there will be people here who are fans of the film, and I think it would be great for you to watch, just because of how far reaching the influence of this film, and the directors entire body of work, has been.

It's also available to be watched for free on Youtube, which will help yourselves and other folks here watch it, as I don't know if there is a streaming service which hosts it.
