Thunder. T Birds. Thunder Birds. And Saturday Night Fever is the classic Travolta dancy movie. The Bee Gees (BGs short for The Brothers Gibb in case you ask) did the soundtrack so it’s worth watching it for that alone. Plus you’ll understand a thousand pop culture references.

jmundt33a

Too many people recovering from Lost use this ending as therapy. It was just a nonsense Disney parody/homage.

Mark McConnell

Movies where Travolta played a ‘dance-y person’. You mean like Saturday Night Fever, Urban Cowboy? Lol, for a while, EVERY movie John did he played a ‘dance-y person’. It’s part of the reason it was so cool when Vincent and Mia hit the floor in Pulp Fiction. We all got to see Johnnie Boy dance again.

The theories about the "real meaning" of the ending are WILD. I think the one Simone was talking about is the theory that they're all already dead and this is Purgatory, and Danny and Sandy flying away signifies that they're moving on to Heaven because they made peace with themselves and overcame their flaws. Everybody else is still there ('going to summer school') because they're not ready yet. The 'T' in T-Birds doesn't have an "official" meaning in this film that the characters ever say, but it means "thunder". 'Thunderbird' is a famous car model, and a mythological concept (Where the car got its name), etc. T-bird is the default shortening for all of those terms already. A few years ago I saw this great video that removed the music while keeping the lyrics in the, so you can see what it looks like "real" for everybody to just start dancing: https://va.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_qs063sbzDS1qjnhqg.mp4

A Red Mage Named Blue

I fully expected George to photoshop their faces the other way around

nj

guessing simone's role: she didn't sound very excited about it, so . . . patty simcox? or dolores? (although, even a lesser pink lady is still a pink lady . . . .)

Jeff K

Haven’t watched the reaction yet so not sure what hints Simone might give but I could totally see her as Frenchy.

Kane Is Able

Grease 2 better be next! Better than 1.

REDR58

Plus, everybody thinks Saturday Night Fever is a silly goofy movie when in reality it’s quite dark. What a twist!

MongoTheElder

In the 70's, Olivia Newton-John was as musical icon and a goddess to most teen boys. As soon as we saw her in that black leather outfit, we lost our minds.

Adam K

I know it wasn’t part of the vote, but the Spielberg West Side Story is just brilliant from the dancing, the set design, the songs - all of it is amazing and heart breaking.

C Perry

Admit it, Simone. You were Frenchy, weren't you? Like many others around the globe, we did Grease in high school. And I was Kenickie.

Jeff K

I think Grease is the only show my parents ever saw on Broadway, and they just happened to see it during the very brief period in which Patrick Swayze played Danny. I can't remember who else was in the cast other than David Paymer (you might not recognize the name, but if you google him, you'll realize you've seen him in like 50 things) as Sonny.

Jeff K

Simone definitely has strong Frenchy energy. My aunt and uncle used to run the summer stock shows in the town where I grew up, and one of my cousins played Kenickie, though he would have been better as Danny (he couldn't since his older sister was cast as Sandy, so that would have been super weird; he was the more talented performer, but she was the spoiled oldest daughter... haha).

Jeff K

I hope that if they do watch that, they watch the original first. I'm not a big fan of musicals, but I freaking love the original West Side Story.

thomas king

American Graffiti is a must see for you guys. Lol that George thought this took place in the 1970s. U need to brush up on your pop culture.

Dan Holmes

Please watch Broken Arrow for some villainous Travolta :)

Mastervodo

The only reason I know what a pompadour was is due to a Billy Joel Song, "Keeping the Faith". I took a fresh pack of Luckies And a mint called Sen-Sen My old man's Trojans and his Old Spice after shave Oh, combed my hair in a pompadour Like the rest of the Romeos wore A permanent wave, yeah We were keeping the faith Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Keeping the faith

Dan Holmes

Ok can Cinebinge release an official album of just Simone covering Showtunes from Grease and other musicals pls :)

ShoNuff3000

Olivia Newton Swan 🔥🔥🔥

CD

Sorry, but mixed. As excited as I was for this…as I sat down with my Saturday-morning coffee, it hit me: sh*t…they’re going to have to cut/mute the MUSIC! Despite that…it was a decent edit George. But…Simone singing/mouthing half the tunes, was both endearing and a little grating. And George thinking this was ACTUALLY the 70s, for half the film…had me straight up shouting at the screen, lol. Still…even a “mixed” reaction, with G + S is a treat. Thanks CineBuns. I think I’ll watch the WHOLE movie tonight. #theword

Justin P Fivecoat

Saturday night fever is the other Travolta movie you were talking about.

Galactic Cannibl

Its hard not to sing to it lol. And would you be able to tell the difference in 50s, 60s and 70s China? 😊

David Crabtree

I highly recommend Grease 2, starring a young Michelle Phieffer!

Happy Hanukkah

3:45 Between actual high school and this movie, the actor "went to law school, passed the bar exam, and briefly became an assistant district attorney in New York." [IMDb] 5:15 r/whoosh ? 16:08 It's aspirational, George! 22:08 "Prince of the Platters" Speaking of old school! Platter aka phonograph record aka LP. For the obvious reason. Not to confuse with The Platters, eg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5p2k55F-uag 22:34 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobellis_v._Ohio Also, "What's considered vulgar?" I think it's *very* safe to assume we're about to find out! :-) 23:05 A bunch of viewers breathe a long-held sigh of relief. :-) 33:44 And in the background of the "We'll always be together" number: the big centrifugal rides. Symbolism! 34:29 LOL 35:30 Icky hickeys from Kenickie?

Shiby23

To combat this Grease movie, you gotta watch the movie The Outsiders which is a not so musical version of Greasers vs the Soches. fantastic movie to watch right after this for same era different perspective

James Falato

One of the points of even the Broadway Play this film is based on had cast members that were in their 30s-plus... So it seems it was done purposely...

Gatsby

Please watch Four Rooms💞

Guy-on-Couch

"a hickey from Kenickie is like a Hallmark card" hahaha they don't make them like this anymore...i was also today years old when I learned that Kenickie is his first name...I always thought they were calling him by his last name and if his full name was mentioned in the movie, I never noticed

Kron0n

50's

rictus grin

"prince of the platters" is another term for a DJ well a famous one anyway. its from back when radio DJ's played actual records

HeyHeyJK

Hey, I just drove over the LA River where they filmed that yesterday. Um, that's the end of that story, I guess. If you think that the cast looks like the oldest high schoolers ever, then you've never seen a real 1950's school yearbook. They ALL looked 30-40 when they were in high school back then. It was weird. Also, yeah, "Saturday Night Fever" was the film where Travolta broke out as a movie star and, for as much as I still hate disco, it's a fantastic time capsule of that era and his dancing is iconic with so many parodies (you've seen one already in "Airlplane"). Definitely worth a reaction.

William G

Home improvement, the TV show with Tim Allen, did a version of greased lighting. They changed the lyrics to dragon wagon.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

IMO the best thing George Lucas ever did, Star Wars nerds can meet me at the the playground after 3 if they disagree. A slice of Americana at its finest.

Shelby Grego

So My guess for Simones part she did in School Patty Simcocks

Lana Gorgeous

Boy are you guys square, that was the great Frankie Avalon singing to Frenchy. Oh and in case you did not know it Olivia Newton John was a big time Grammy nominated singer. She was a huge star when she did this movie. Also John Travolta was having a banner couple years. He starred in his biggest movie of all time Saturday Night Fever the year before. I definitely recommend that movie. Also is you like this era movie try American Graffiti. Big time stars in that movie, people like Harrison Fords first movie.

CARL EVANS

Once again I am baffled by George's lack of just general pop culture knowledge. Like you like the Simpsons but you gotta be missing like 65% of the jokes in the first 15 seasons. 😂

Cinebinge

It speaks a lot to the first 15 seasons of Simpsons writing though doesn't it? That even if the reference goes over my head, it's still funny as hell 😁😆

Lana Gorgeous

Grease was a blockbuster. I saw it when it first came out, but it was a gentler nicer version of a movie with great music and a John Travolta that was in some ways 180 degrees different the movie he did just a year earlier. It was that movie not Grease that made him a mega star. That movie was Saturday Night Fever. It was his performance in Saturday Night Fever, that got people coming back and getting butts in movie theatre seats for Grease. Before Saturday Night Fever John Travolta was mainly a little know TV star from Welcome Back Kotter. But if you do watch Saturday Night Fever, it has great music and an award winning soundtrack, but that is where the similarities end. SNF is a gritty street drama and closer to 8-Mile that grease " and all that entails" but an excellent movie and John Travolta was nominated for an Oscar due to his performance.
