Currently wrapping up your reaction to The Shining and then the double feature continues. My favorite piece of casting in this movie is Henry Thomas as Jack. He was the kid in ET.

JediLounger

Thanks for watching the Directors cut. For those who don’t know, if you have this movie on Vudu like I do then you have the directors cut. If you go into the settings/features for the movie, the directors cut is in there.

Dustin Lollar

my favorite is the guy talking at the baseball game IS the original Danny from The Shining.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Excited for this one, it's one of my favorite recent horror movies and I think one of the best sequels ever, but I've never seen the director's cut so this should be awesome!

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Fantastic sequel. The way this movie has to maintain the balance between Kubrick’s film and King’s novels really is a testament to Mike Flanagan and co. His television series are also pretty stellar and worth getting onto at some point as well☺️

Fernando Alamán

George, sorry to be that guy, but please remember to double-check the timer on the videos. In the last few months there have been a couple videos like this with no timer, and I think there was another one with the timer at double speed. Again, I don't want to sound rude, but the timer is a very useful feature to me (and I guess to others too).

Seeing more of Flanagan's stuff is a must. I'm not sure there's a name in horror right now that has more goodwill behind them. I always hear people say they like one show more than another, but I never hear people talk about his work as if they're disappointed. 'Gerald's Game' is another great movie that creeps me out just thinking about it. You guys probably have a packed TV schedule, but it would be great to see one of his shows pop up in the near future.

Jeff I.

As much as I love this movie overall, I can't help notice how clunky the writing on a decent amount of the dialogue is. From the usual "No one would ever talk like that in real life!" trope to little stuff like "Shine on, Abra Stone. Shine on."...why does he say her full name, and why does he need to repeat it. I swear it feels like Ewan didn't know how to deliver that cheesy line. Haha. There's a few other lines where the actor practically repeats a line three times, and the third time is completely unnecessary and it kind of kills the timing/flow. I've seen other stuff written by Flanagan, and this is honestly kind of a trademark of his (despite every other aspect of his work usually being really good).

Can't get this movie anywhere, but I listened to your before and after. The mention of Firestarter in the trivia bit refers to King's book of the same name. There is a movie, starring Drew Barrymore, the little girl from E.T. I highly recommend you react to Firestarter. It's a great film.

Connor Macarty

Real talk how does everyone get the director’s cut??? I usually rent the movie off prime if I can’t find it on any streaming services but none of them ever have the directors cut so it’s very difficult to watch along at the same time. Anyone else have the same problem???

Dustin Lollar

Guess YouTube pulled it, right at the final scene. Damn.

MikeBdrx

oh man i was almost at the end!!

Lemuel Daher

Is there any chance you could let us know what service you’re watching this on? I also live in Canada, but the directors cut isn’t available on any streaming service that I can find.

Steve Mercier

You can purchase the director's cut--in America, at least--on Amazon Prime, but you have to look for "Doctor Sleep Director's Cut + Bonus Features" and not just "Doctor Sleep Director's Cut." That's the only way I saw to watch it. I love the movie, and I'm kind of stupid like that, so I did, but...

Dustin Lollar

Mike Flanagan had the almost impossible job of not only making a sequel to a classic Kubrick film, and also making a sequel that pays respect to the book that Kubrick didn't do. Also the actor who plays Jack Torrence has been in all of Mike Flanagan's projects. The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass and others. Also he was the little boy in E.T. Also this film was shot in my hometown of Covington, Ga. The square is where Danny and Abra met. So I see this area everyday. In the book Dr Sleep the final battle takes place in the open field where the Overlook stood. And the ghosts still were haunting the area. And finally the guy at the baseball game that was talking about the baseball boy being a good pitcher, he is the actor that played Danny Torrence in The Shining.

David Zabel

You should watch the miniseries too. It's very good as well.

Monica Alarcon

In the novel Danny really is Abra's uncle. Her mom is Jack Torrance's illegitimate child.

Roby J

I'm glad you both enjoyed this. I'd love to see more Mike Flanagan on the channel in the future. The Haunting of Hill House is the perfect start and then you can explore the others. Each runs 10 episodes and they all are self contained stories, so they would be a great fit for between Better Call Saul seasons.

''I think this whole thing is an allegory for alcoholism''. ........ No Shit, George. King, among quite a few other things, was a well documented alcoholic, and it's equally as well documented, that he was ''exorcising Demons'' while working on both books......

Brandon

It wasn't until the very end of the scene that I realized it was Henry Thomas playing Jack Torrance in the guise of "Lloyd" the bartender. In The Shining, Jack saw "Lloyd" in the form of the previous caretaker that murdered his family (twin girls). Second time seeing this movie and I had no idea it was the kid from E.T. playing Jack. Thomas is a Flanagan regular, and I think he's appeared in every thing he's made so far. I also LOVE how Flanagan manages to adapt the novel, while also knowing that the original novel was altered for the film adaptation by Kubrick, so he had to be even more mindful of what he was doing. On top of that, the hotel exploding is a nod to the original novel's ending that Kubrick changed. So Flanagan managed to pay respect to ALL things Shining in this one movie. There's a TV miniseries from the 90's the had the original explodey-ending from the novel. It has its moments, but it doesn't even compare to Kubrick's film.

Odd Thomas

Yasss. Now we just need some more James Wan films on the channel: Malignant, Conjuring 2, Dead Silence, Insidious...

Odd Thomas

Mike Flanagan also directed The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix; one of the greatest shows ever made.

LengyelFlo

I watched this movie with you for the first time, and honestly, I don't like it. It's an overrated movie. The original The Shining (mostly the novel, and partly the movie) was a wonderful allegory of alcoholism (or any kind of addiction), and a brilliant mental portrait of a man sinking into the madness of withdrawal and self-loathing. In this movie Danny's addiction is a short intro only - like a snap of fingers, it is solved. I don't see him struggle or develop; I don't see the girl, either, to take a mental route from A to B. The characters are paper figures. The evil is evil, the good is good. The whole movie has a teen/young adult/fan fiction vibe for me instead of telling something to adults.

Diiirk706

...Just torrent the God Damned thing. They did. It's how they get/watch like ninety percent of their Shit..... If not a hundred percent....lmao... Also, the recent SAG-AFTRA strikes just further shed light on the fact that torrents ONLY ''hurt'' the Billion Dollar Companies, and ZERO of the people actually working on/making projects, because : ''they've already made all of the money their ever gonna make'' ... Unless ''royalties'', and that's a whole 'nother can of worms..... So yeah : Torrent everything. Especially when pretty much every Streaming Service is over fifteen bux a month nowadays, and individual ''renting'' is over five bux a pop.... Only way said companies will EVER learn, if at all.....

Monica Alarcon

Whaaaat, but torrenting is stealing!!!... oh hold on... The Wolverine is finished downloading... what was I saying?

D. T. Nelson

I've always fancied the idea that Stephen King stole the idea of the cat going to the beds of dying hospice patients from a short story I wrote back in the late 1980s. Not sure where he would have SEEN the story... but hey, he's Stephen King. As for Doctor Sleep, the novel, I really enjoyed it, but it never had any sense of peril for the main characters. Rose and her band of "shine" vampires, I never felt they had a chance against Abra. From the beginning of the story they seemed outmatched. The movie more than does justice to the novel and pays perfect homage to the movie "The Shining".

Grand Moff Slackin'

Midnight Mass is another great Mike Flanagan work y’all should check out.

João Rafael Ferreira

I know many already said it, but Now that you are on mike flanagan's realm just go for Haunting of Hill House. Its amazing

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Zahn McClarnon, "Crow Daddy", is one of my new favorite actors. He was great in this but mostly it's for his performances in Reservation Dogs and, especially, in Fargo Season 2, he's at least my second favorite character in that, it's between Patrick Wilson and him, and that's saying a lot because the cast in that season is amazing.

sarCC

So happy you enjoyed this so much. I like it quite a bit, and this isn't that much of a diss, but I definitely feel it's one of screenwriter/director Mike Flanagan's lesser works. (I think only The Midnight Club is a miss[granted, it's because Netflix made him add a terrible throughline plot]) For a similar theme of places being living things interfering with people's lives, check out his "Haunting" shows: The Haunting Of Hill House and The Haunting Of Bly Manor. These are my favorite things he's done and while I agree with others that Midnight Mass is his most solid and strongest work, these hit me harder. They're more family/relationship dramas than they are scary horror stories(though Hill House has probably the most effective jump scare of all-time). Bly Manor's one of my favorite TV shows, period. It's so moving.

Allen Pass

Finally! A very good movie. Wish you guys would react to Gattaca...

Eric Haines

I was just going to type this. I have mentioned it the past. Would love love for George and Simone react to it. Its soooo good!

Jonas Buckner

He's really great. He stars in a show now called Dark Winds, in which he plays a Navajo tribal police officer trying to solve a double homicide in the early 70s.

E. D.

can‘t find the longer version for free :/ and apple tv+ is lying: I can clearly see they have the longer version but when I bought the 7 days free trial there was only the short version. apple tv is a pain in the ass for several reasons, even disney+ ain‘t as dogshit

droodly

In case it helps someone, my copy of this in iTunes has the director's cut as an "extra". I had to go into the extras menu and select this version. :)

Grandalf

For the sake of your faithful community, you guys NEED to watch The Haunting of Hill House for Halloween this year. Flanagan is a MASTER.

Grandalf

In case you missed the other comments, it should be in your special features.

Chris

You need to go down Mike Flanagan rabbit hole, he has some great stuff. Netflix has 4 shows of his that are a must watch, Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher. He has some great movies too. You'll thank me later :)

Philipp Roensch

Doctor Sleep is a great book, and this movie an amazing adaption. I've had an alcoholic father as well, thankfully never as violent as the evils in this story, but it hits home to a strong degree. Flanagan really put in the work to make this story as horrific, tragic, but also beautiful as it deserves. Kubrik's version is a good horror film, but this captures more of the mythos and has light and dark in a good measure.

Eric Van Horn

You should definitely watch Firestarter, the original 1984 one not the 2022 remake. The 1984 Firestarter, starring Drew Barrymore, is awesome.

Crunkljack

Just like everyone in the comments section 'The Haunting of Hill House", "The Haunting of Bly Manor" and "Midnight Mass". I would love love to watch The Fall of the House of Usher with you guys for the first time. I'll also wait to see if you guys keep going down the Mike Flanagan rabbit hole. I want to watch more of his stuff. But I'd love to do with you guys.

REDR58

I generally enjoyed the movie, but found the recasting of the characters from "The Shining" rather distracting because Shelly Duvall, Jack Nicholson and Scatman Crothers all have such distinctive features. The new actors portraying each of their characters in this movie all do a fine job, but I couldn't quite get past the discontinuity so it pulled me out of the story a bit. I know there was no practical way to recreate the original actors' appearance other than with CG and if it wasn't done really well, it's no better and probably worse than just recasting, but I almost wish they had just left them out of the movie, somehow. The oldest of the The Knot, Grandpa Flick is played by Carel Struycken who appears in some episodes of Star Trek TNG, Twin Peaks and as Lurch in the 1991 and 1993 "Addams Family" movies. Jacob Tremblay who plays the Baseball Boy is Canadian and won "Best Actor in a Leading Role" Canadian Screen Award for his role in the 2015 movie "Room" also starring Brie Larson. "Room" is a difficult, excellent film and I highly recommend it.

Eric Haines

Def need a Mike Flanigan poll soon! :) This was soooo good, fav reaction in a while!

Starman Deluxe

lol the dad in the stands at the little league game talking about the kid reading the pitcher was the guy who played Danny in the Shining as a kid

Gary Fixler

This was amazing. I didn't even know it existed!

Grumblefunk

George, it's time to buy yourself a silent mouse so your incessant clicking throughout every film isn't so present in the mix.

IncredibleBulk

is it just me that feels a real sense of accomplishment when you get Simones reference at the start?

Tom Ekstrand

Anyone besides me like to see them tackle a Mike Flanagan TV series??

Amelie W

At some point when you're hunting and killing an endless series of especially gifted children to keep yourself alive, you really have to ask yourself what you're living for. These villains never do that which makes them boring to me. They're apparently satisfied reducing the rest of the human race outside their family to cattle and feeding on them until they have to worry there's no more shining to keep them alive. No more interesting than a rabid dog really. They could leave the True Knot out and just have the movie be about Danny dealing with his unquiet past and Abra getting her parents to accept her magic powers, and him mentoring her. But this is more dramatic I guess.

DM DC

This was a neat and interesting movie. The Villainess was actually well done. I'm pretty sure that the bartender in the end was supposed to be Jack, but I think I also agree with Simone, the casting choice didn't quite hit like the one for Wendy Torrence (originally portrayed by Shelley Duvall). She even got manerisms that Shelley had exibited in the first flim. I was really empressed with Alex Essoe's performance. I did feel that Abra was sorta in the same vein as Rey in the sequal Star Wars trilogy- but at the sime time I did kinda like it too, since she was really letting that villainess Rose have it good for what she's done. When we first heard the singing and saw a woman sitting by the lake I was thinking it was La Llorona and while I was wrong about that, still didn't help that kid at all. It's horrific to think that that poor child went through the same thing as the baseball boy. Glad the hotel got Rose. She deserved much worse but she still got her come upins. For the longest time I really didn't know there was a sequal to The Shinning. That movie I like because it's one of only two movies I ever saw that sorta creeped me out a bit. This one didn't have that same effect but was still all together good. And it was cool revisiting the hotel. You two should to see Firestarter (1984) I have not seen the remake, nor have I ever wanted to. While if I recall correctly, King wasn't a fan of this adaptation either, he generally wasn't a fan of most of the adaptations that I recall. Still I always liked the movie. Just as I did with The Shining. It gets weird to think that all of these movies based on Stephen King's works all take place in the same universe. Something to think about next time you watch one, remember that out there somewhere is Christine, and that Carrie once walked about or that Pennywise may still be in that one town. I always wondered what it would be like for someone like Abra to visit where Pennywise hunts and have her confront him. How would that end?

Noel Valdez

You guys should watch Black Phone. Idk why but I got reminded of that movie from this.
