One of the better period pieces out there

My favorite horror movie!

So Nobody was a “dad’s wish fulfillment “ is this Simone’s wish fulfillment since she has stated her time in school was …. um…less than ideal?

Itbewhatitbe

i think you got the 2 things he talked about mixed up, but he also misremembered somethings. 1. he talked about the fake smoke and test subject thing, that is real and there is a video of it. 2. the fire hes referring to is from 1979 at a woolworths. people did die in that fire, and the primary cause was other issues BUT survivors did tell stories about how some refused to leave the check out line despite the alarm and smoke.

Communal showers after gym class were a thing up to the 70s/80s. If you refused the shower, you'd likely get detention. The shower scene isn't a boys fantasy, it's one of the many anxiety inducing realities of high school at the time.

Those Asch Paradigm studies are pretty fascinating, George! Something similar is Prevalence Induced Concept Change, which covers a similar area but explores how some things become less familiar in everyday life, so our perceptions of them adjust to keep them at the same level of positive or negative association, often to our detriment in some areas. Well worth checking it out! We humans be weird. Anyway, great adaptation and one of De Palma’s best works.

Keith Brown

The actress playing the nastiest girl in the movie would later be married to DePalma in real life . Spacek and Laurie Carrie and her mom were both nominated for Oscars for their roles.

Paul Davey

Yes, all Stephen King works take place in a single universe. His Dark Tower (avoid the movie though like the plague) series tells how they're all connected and why many of his stories deal with people with special abilities.

Pam Nail

Sissy Spacek's husband Jack Fisk also did the set design for this movie (and many other DePalma movies). And he was the one who suggested she audition for the role.

Cincassette

Really enjoyed this reaction! It's a very unique horror thriller! I was reminded a lot of Hitchcock rewatching this one, especially the ways in which it builds suspense. Here are a few Hitchcock suggestions that are great: - Rear Window (1954) - Psycho (1960) - Vertigo (1958) - The Birds (1963) For the spooky, scary season some fun films would be: - The Addams Family (1991) - Addams Family Values (1993)

- I love that you guys immediately understood that Sue was trying to be nice. So many reactors are suspicious of her and Tommy, but you can tell from early on that she feels guilty about making fun of her. You can also see them contrasting her with Chris -- both girls asking their boyfriends for a favor, in very different ways and for very different motives. - This movie has the best Hitchcockian "show them the bomb" sequence by any filmmaker not named Hitchcock. DePalma gets SO MUCH tension out of us knowing that bucket is up there and watching everyone not knowing. - DePalma uses the split screen in a LOT of his movies; it's kind of his trademark. - In the book, Carrie's dress actually *is* red, but they changed it to pink for the movie so that the blood would show up better. But no one changed the line. Then, when they shot the scene, they wanted to change the line, but Piper Laurie insisted on keeping it as is, reasoning that -- in Margaret's diseased mind -- it IS red.

Would recommend high plains drifter

I meeeeean........ YOU guys made the locker room scene weird. It's just young womanhood personified/springtime/growing up Shit, that transitions into bullying🤷‍♂️ And the music cue was pretty perfect for it. I Fucking HATE 2024, and how the internet has perma rotted peoples' brains............ Also yeah : ''Mandatory'' After Gym Class Communal Showers, for both sexes, were a thing until 'round the early 1990s. Especially in small/rural christo fascist towns across North America. Even I know that, and I was in high school in the early 2000s...

Itbewhatitbe

spamming i see. so i repeat again, classic old man yells at cloud. the director himself had said the opening scene is meant to be pervy feeling, how teenage boys fantasizes girls locker rooms being like. its meant to be that way.

REDR58

Piper Laurie who starred here as Margaret White is excellent in the “Twin Peaks” series. She just died last October at age 91. She performed with the USO for military service members in Korea: https://www.stripes.com/history/archive_photo_of_the_day/actress-piper-laurie-1953-1.537918 William Katt is probably most recognizable in the US for his 1981-1983 TV series “The Greatest American Hero” as a teacher who is bestowed extraordinary powers by aliens and becomes a reluctant superhero: https://youtu.be/72MxOo5koto?si=Ydu57cOqlXogrgQq

Heck yes!!!!!! It’s finally the day for the Carrie reaction, I’ve been wanting you two to react to this movie for a long time and when I saw it was happening this week I was so happy. I can’t wait to watch this tonight.

BangDroid

It's an anti-bullying movie. I tell ya, from my experiences of school, the trauma responses, the fantasies of revenge... If I had supernatural powers like Carrie, I might have burned my entire school as well.

Opti_Frog

That prom opener, Education Blues by Vance Or Towers, slaps so hard.

China Andronicus

You definitely need to watch Psycho. Anthony Perkins deserved an Oscar nomination for that one. Stephen King threw this away after starting it, thinking it was no good, but his wife found it in the trash and encouraged him to keep working on it. Eternally grateful to her for that. The statue in Carrie's closet isn't Jesus, it's Saint Sebastian. The girl in the red cap (who was also in Halloween) wore it constantly because it helped win her the role. DePalma loved it and at her first audition he told her to bring it back with her. Some proms do in fact require dates. My mom's did in the 70s and mine did when I was there in the early aughts, two different schools.

PIG

I knew most of these facts but not that the figure is Saint Sebastian. Neat!

The horror subgenre of this film Is called monsterous menstruation about tying puberty with gaing powers. It also includes a film called gingersnaps which us pretty good.

Outside of the actual reaction: plumbers are notoriously flakey and unreliable. Everyone I know who owns property has had trouble with plumbers showing when planned or just getting a call back. It's horrible especially since plumbing gone bad can be disasterous to a home.

I heard an interesting fact recently that noble people put to death by guillotine rarely showed emotion as they were led to the gallows, believing it would make their final moments look weak. Stiff upper lip and all that - BUT one woman did cry and beg and later the crowd said they found it not entertaining like before but upsetting. The irony being that if more of the noble classes had shown emotion, the guillotine might have been consigned to history far sooner.

Odd Thomas

You (understandably) didn't recognise the nice teacher was Betty Buckley, who played the old lady in Split (the shrink). She's in a few Shyamalan movies.

Odd Thomas

In the book I think the White house is pummelled by rocks that fall from the sky - this is the ending they used in the 2013 remake, which is decent enough tbf, but I thought Chloe Grace Moretz was miscast as all I could think about was Hitgirl, so I never feared for her Carrie like I did Sissy Spacek.

Doug's Night Terrors

After hearing the trivia segment and noticing that you haven't seen Psycho, it occurred to me that I don't think you've covered any Alfred Hitchcock movies yet. Alfred Hitchcock poll anyone? Psycho, The Birds, Rear Window...

REDR58

Fortunately the plumber I call from time to time has been excellent, doesn’t overcharge or waste time and keeps the work area clean. I also do minor plumbing jobs myself. I learned how to solder and cut pipe and it really isn’t difficult it all.

Skyruff

Stephen King is a great short story writer but has trouble with ending his novels. He has a tendency to like the movie versions better. You guys remember the movie “The Mist” (hehe)? King liked that movie ending better than his book ending. Don’t even get me started about the ending to book version of “The Stand”. You read over a thousand pages of great build up to … WTF? Ok, got lost there for a minute. Stephen King is great! All good here.

George, speaking of interesting social experiments, y'all should totally watch and react to The Stanford Prison Experiment. It is a true story of a very fascinating psychological study done with actual college students in 1971 at Stanford University.

Lana Gorgeous

Sissy Spacek became a superstar of an actor. She won the Oscar in the movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" one of her greatest films with Tommy Lee Jones. I highly recommend it. One of her first films was with Martin Sheen in Badlands another incredible movie. She is just an incredible actor, one of the best ever!

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

I never understood why people feared Carrie outside of the assholes that treated her badly. As someone who grew up in a religious environment and was bullied at school, I rooted for her. I was glad she got her revenge. So Chloe's casting in the remake makes no difference to me. If anything, I wanted to help her.

Lana Gorgeous

This was John Travolta's 2nd movie and you must also watch him in Saturday Night Fever, the movie that made him a superstar! Before he made movies he played in a TV weekly comedy series called Welcome Back, Kotter from 1975 ‧

Lana Gorgeous

Oh the girl with the hat played in many of those teen kind of movies esp. in the horror genre like Halloween, but also with Bill Murry in the incredible comedy movie "Stripes"

REDR58

Stephen King fans or those who have never read one of his books need to check out “The Eyes of the Dragon” that was published in 1984. Great fantasy story.

Shonnicus

I love how DePalma has these shots where the whole face fill the frame. I'm not enough of a nerd to know what lens he use to get this shot, but love it. He does this great in the film "Casualties of War" (1989)

Tyler Foster

Another famous social experiment is the Milgram experiment. The subjects are led into a room and placed at a control panel, and they are asked to administer a series of questions to someone sitting in the other room, and when the other person doesn't get the answers right, the subject is supposed to deliver electric shocks to that person using the control panel. The person being "shocked" is actually part of the experiment and the machine does not shock them at all, but they act as if the zaps get progressively worse. There is a third man in the room with the real subject administering the fake shocks, who will encourage them to keep shocking the other person no matter how much the "victim" objects. The question is: how long will the subject willingly "harm" this other person before they actually refuse to keep administering the test? The story of the experiment was made into a really fascinating movie that I loved in 2015 starring Peter Sarsgaard as Stanley Milgram and Winona Ryder as his wife Sasha. I highly recommend it, it's very well-made. Some other people will no doubt bring up the Stanford Prison Experiment, but it sounds like that study has been debunked as manipulated. Also, Brian De Palma also directed Mission: Impossible. Another great movie you two should check out by him is Blow Out.

David Lonewolf Wright

I was one month old when this movie was released... and now I feel really old. I saw the "sequel" to this called The Rage: Carrie 2 first. I liked it, but it isn't a good movie. The humiliation to the killing scene was way more graphic and "creative" with the telekinesis. I was kind of surprised when I finally saw this that the prom scene was a little more reserved, but still very effective. I would say this movie was good at making you uncomfortable throughout, especially when you knew where things were headed.

REDR58

You have seen Nancy Allen who plays the girl Christine who arranged the pig’s blood as Anne Lewis in RoboCop opposite Peter Weller. She is also in the movies “Dressed to Kill” (1980) and “Blow Out” (1981), also directed by De Palma. Check them out.

REDR58

Anyone else notice that near the ending scene when Sue (Amy Irving) is dreaming that she is walking up to the site of Carrie's home, starting at about 1:34:40, you can see 3 red cars in the background moving backwards, which means that Amy Irving was actually walking backwards and the scenes were filmed in reverse, presumably to add a dreamlike quality. You can see her hair and dress move oddly as she walks. EDIT: 58 seconds into the clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rr-VODLBOVA

Brian de Palma was considered his generation of directors' master of suspense. I think you might have commented on this when you reacted to Mission: Impossible (1996). Blow Out (1981) and Dressed to Kill (1980) are other great examples, but my favorite of his movies, one I think would make a great reaction video, is The Untouchables (1987). Also, apropos of the coming season, I'd like to recommend Shadow of the Vampire (2000). It's my kind of horror movie, by which I mean that even though it has a vampire and Willem Dafoe in it, it's not very scary at all, just entertaining.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Hopefully with Robert Eggers’ remake coming up, we can expect all manner of “Nosferatu” content: the original, Werner Herzog’s adaptation & “Shadow of the Vampire”.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

With all the comments mentioning & praising the Hitchcockian elements in this movie I hope we can get some films in the queue from the man himself soon. This movie is among my favorite displays of heightened reality, especially as it relates to all the highs, lows, isolation, & anxieties/stresses of being a teenager. A strange recommendation I’ll add to the mix is “Battle Royale”, as it’s probably my next favorite movie that covers similar themes, a teen drama taken to the extreme!! It’s also the movie that the “Hunger Games” series has been accused of plagiarizing.

G P

Check out Twin Peaks to see Carrie's mother in a completely different role

Jesse Coombs

I hope you guys go down the DePalma filmography. He's one of the best. Raising Cain, Body Double, Femme Fatale, and Carlito's Way are some of my favorites, but most of his movies are great.

E. D.

I just found out Nancy Allen married Brian De Palma 1979 and they divorced 1984.

Brad Lowry

Another more famous – well 'experiment' is too strong a word – maybe 'exercise' that has been around since a Fifth Grade teacher tried to explain the assassination of MLK back in 1968 to her class. So famous that I think you guys (and many fellow Patreons) quite likely have heard of it, 'The Blue Eye – Brown Eye' 'exercise'. I had certainly heard of it, and thought that this documentary was just a rehash of the high-points. Instead this is a documentary of a room of adults participating in the 'exercise' again almost 20 years later that is at once chilling, uplifting, disgusting, heroic, nihilistic... and continually stunning! A CLASS DIVIDED https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/documentary/class-divided/

Brad Lowry

Oh my! Two of my celebrity crushes that I forgot were in this – actually, probably too early in their careers to notice. PJ Soles, with the Red Baseball Cap (George asked, "Why is she dressed like a McDonald's Employee?"). She was in Stripes with Bill Murray, and my favorite of her's, "Rock 'n' Roll High School" with the Ramones... please, Please, PLEASE put it on your list. Also, Amy Irving, the curly haired girl that was first to show some regret for her cruelty in the locker room. Her first husband was Steven Spielberg and she was his first wife. She was well known as the love interest in "Hoosiers", but my favorite of hers was a Rom-Com that perhaps Simone hasn't seen yet, "Crossing Delancey"... please do put that on your list, assuming that at least George hasn't seen it. :-)

Brad Lowry

And... I can't help but suggest a few Sissy Spacek films for you to consider reacting to. The obvious is her Oscar winning performance in "Coal Miner's Daughter". Also, a couple of great comedic turns were in "The Help" where she is comic relief to an otherwise very serious topic. Also, in "Blast from the Past" it's all comedy in a fun Rom-Com and history lesson where she plays the mom of Canadian Branden Frasier (along with a other Canadian actors). But my favorite, of those I've seen, is where she and Martin Sheen play two really bad teenagers in "Badlands" from 1973. BTW, I was amazed to discover on her IMdb page that she was the narrator for Scout's voice-over for "To Kill a Mockingbird"!

Beddoe

If you're not tired of Stephen King check out - Salem's Lot (1979). It's a 2-part TV miniseries - The Dead Zone (1983). It stars Christopher Walken Halloween is coming up after all ! Put them on a poll. Or put them on a pole, your choice.

Wayne Kryka

Amy Irving (Sue) was Steven Spielberg’s first wife
