Richard

A film that spawned a total of 17 seasons over 3 different shows which all started with Stargate SG1 (this ran for 10 seasons), such a good show with a really great cast.

A Red Mage Named Blue

I really hope we'll get some reactions to the shows (Eventually)

Yaron Assa

If you do get to it, Stargate SG1 is one of the more rewarding ongoing shows - great progression, believable technological timeline (humanity enhances it's capabilities throughout the show), and a lot of humor

Ronny Boss

Oh boy I can't wait to get off work and see what you fine folks thought of this. Been a favorite film of mine since I was a wee lad

Adam Wetstein

I think it is stime for George to rush to his barber and get the blond flat top

The show based on this is pretty good. They established that Ra was just one of a pantheon, the Stargates were a network, and that not all the soldiers working for the gods were there by choice. Just the idea of the Stargate network allowed for dozens of possible stories as you could just make up a new planet and plant a Stargate there.

Matthew Johnson

Jaye Davidson who played Ra only ever appeared in two films: this and The Crying Game for which they were nominated for an Oscar. The Crying Game is an exceptional movie that also unfortunately traffics in very damaging tropes and stereotypes with regards to gender that are hopefully a thing of the past. But despite that Davidson was such a magnetic and empathetic screen presence that even their short film career is incredibly memorable.

Jeff K.

I'd go so far as to say the show is better than the movie. Obviously a much smaller budget, but I found it more enjoyable. And the same goes for Atlantis and SGU, too.

JBK405

The TV show has a somewhat uneven start in the beginning (What show doesn't?), but finds its footing in season two. Even the subpar first season isn't altogether HORRIBLE. As the show progresses they demonstrate a lot of real-life archaeological knowledge. References to real historical events, real figures, etc. Even when they say "Actually this guy was an alien" their surrounding info shows that the writers at least know the real history, and aren't just making it up from nowhere. The lore (mostly) holds together pretty well. They create a very vast cosmology. Unrelated to this franchise specifically, I've lost the ability to enjoy a lot of "Ancient Aliens" content over the past 10-15 years once I realized how much of it is JUST racism and blatant misinformation. I don't think that was the agenda behind this film or the series, but much of the entire concept has been tainted for me.

Thomas Thompson

This movie suffers from lack of a certain citrus challenged scientist. (He VERY slowly became my favorite character of those series) Also you guys should check out the series SG-1 and Atlantis, it's a great story about humanities early years on a galactic stage.

I don't know if I'd go that far. I often think of them as separate entities, forgetting that the show is technically a sequel series. It might be the change of actors, but I just think it's more that the show feels so long form with season-long arcs paying off and the fact that the movie is so standalone. Maybe if they had made film sequels I'd feel differently, like the movies letdown the series. But in this case Stargate the movie feels like a whole other branch of the family. I definitely got more hours of enjoyment out of the shows and it all did to expand the lore, but I can't just say I didn't enjoy the film a lot too.

Thomas Larsen

So sad that neither netflix nor prime has this available, would have loved to do the whole thing with you, but at least I get the edit :D I hope you want to put the show(s) on your voting lists for long shows when you have room. Such a fun and super interesting show.

Dazzler & Em

Just echoing some of the previous comments. Stargate SG1 is a very good tv show which ran for 10 seasons and had a couple of spin offs. it slightly reconned the alien bad guys but in a very solid way. It had the odd not so great patch but not enough to cause a problem. I would think that a 10 season tv show would be something for much further down the line particularly as you are doing Star Trek but I would definetly add it to your watch in the future list.

Stugotz

the movie is available on Youtube for free, that's how I watched it

Thomas Larsen

damn why didnt u tell me before I knew I needed to know that :P next time this happens im gonna check youtube too now, thanks :)

REDR58

Apparently Davidson retired as he was uncomfortable with the fame received as a result of both of those movies. I wonder if it would be worth watching “The Crying Game” here. I was in high school at the time it was released and of course remember the cultural conversation it started. I’ve only ever seen the movie once, when it was first released. I can’t find any particular recent reviews of Davidson and how he feels about the movie now but I did read a 2023 interview with the director who stated that Davidson attended a (anniversary?) screening of the film several years ago.

Jeff K.

Speaking of Star Trek, I definitely think they'd enjoy SG1 and the other spinoffs, given they have pretty similar premises about a select crew of scientists and soldiers exploring new worlds, encountering new species and alien civilizations, etc.

Jeff K.

I'm genuinely shocked at how many quality movies are just free on YouTube. Every now and then I'll get something recommended to me and I'm like, "Wait, how the hell is THAT film just streaming for free on here?" Including, but not limited to, The Great Escape (this is where I shamelessly insert my request for George and Simone to watch that movie).

Dazzler & Em

I agree especially with the historical societies connection(no spoilers).

Athenor

The tv show sg-1 is awesome and improves upon the movie (coming from a big star trek TNG fan) Simone should watch it even if you don't react to it ❤️

Pepijn Schmitz

"a really old sitcom called Third Rock From The Sun" - go wash out your mouth...

Jeff K.

Right? I was like, "Hey, JGL was a freaking teenager on that show!" And then I realized I'm the same age as JGL and it put things in perspective given I have a teenaged son of my own now. Oof.

Jeff K.

Or as "the classic high school scumbag preppy douche archetype" from '80s teen movies.

Lola Lirola

For better James Spader, check out Sex Lies and Videotape (1989)! It's Steven Soderbergh's first movie, and it is said to be the specific pinpoint birth of 90s indie films. Highly recommend!

Lola Lirola

I think so does JGL, actually!😅 Signed: one who is actually older than JGL and also watched Third Rock from the Sun when it originally aired

Rant Al’More

There is a corridor digital episode on how they did the stargate portal. Highly recommend!!

Kim Brink

Best TV show of all times :) There is a reason it got like 10 seasons and then 3 movies.

Jean-Dominic Lapointe

Ah yes, O’Neill, two L’s, not to be confused with the other one ;)

Sevnthdragon

Yeah sg1 is awesome, even in the scifi channel conversion. Another scifi gem, to answer your theory, yes they start using different combinations and lore gets a metric done deeper.. thicker… ok that’s odd to type anyway well worth a watch even if not reacted to though 10 seasons of sg1, 5? of Atlantis and 3? of universe is a lot of hours to sink into.

Twisty Twitties

Remember watching the movie when i was a kid and really enjoyed it but never sat down and watched the TV Show....I really need to.

Kevin

I hope you will watch the series at some point

Happy Hanukkah

"JUST"? Counterargument: Stonehenge.

Seefah

I know we'd all die of old age before you finished it, but would love a Stargate TV reaction series. The show is SO GOOD, but next to no reactors actually watch it.

REDR58

Including Stargate, there are a boatload of long-running tv shows that were based on movies, everything from M*A*S*H to Fargo to The Odd Couple to Cobra Kai (based on “The Karate Kid” series) to Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Friday Night Lights to Westworld to In the Heat of the Night and on and on.

underAtack

Just came here to say this - such an amazing series! I loved this movie so much when it came out, and the series (each of them, really) is equally fantastic!

Dan

I'm quite surprised that Simone hasn't watched SG1 given that she's watched TNG. Definitely worth a look - IIRC the first series or so is a little less polished than the rest but there's a lot of it for a reason...

James W.

Saw this in the theater, I still love it. Glad you guys had a good time. It seemed to be a perfect overlap for George's interest in history mixed with a bit of silly sci-fi nonsense. He seemed to get locked in really quick which is always a fun watch. To me it is a quintessential summer blockbuster movie. Simple plot but but well executed and acted. This and Independence Day are Emmerich's peak, which is a bit of a bummer, but such is life. maybe one day we'll get another good fun movie out of him; hopefully better than 2012 or 10000BC. The Day After Tomorrow was one of my favorite of the end of the world movies we got in the late 90s and into the early 00s. Stargate SG-1 (TV series) has a much lighter tone overall but Simone nailed the basic concept; using the gate to try and find more worlds and more of the diaspora of ancient humans. it is a really fun show; SG: Atlantis is probably and overall better show, and introduced Jason Momoa in season 2 or 3. SG: Universe was sadly cut short. It was way darker in tone due in large part to the success of the BSG reboot on Sci-Fi Channel (the Syfy name change is dumb and i reject it). MGM were the rights holders and they went bankrupt so all things Stargate (movies, games, TV) got canned and have never really come back. I would still happily play a live service game that was basically Destiny but Stargate; the nature of Gate travel as shown in the show justifies a mission based co-op looter shooter more than pretty much any franchise. Amazon owns it now and they are shit at managing the IPs they control. I do love many of their original series; though you guys bounced hard off of the Expanse which saddens me still. Contrary to the vocal haters I see everywhere, Rings of Power is pretty good, especially as someone who likes the books more than the movies. Season 2 has repaired most quibbles I had with season 1 the show.

Stuart Sutcliffe

Since Roland Emmerich likes making movies about conspiracy theories that have little to no evidence ("Aliens built the pyramids"), have been discredited ("Moonfall"), or are simply false ("Shakespeare did not write his own plays,") it is darkly hilarious to imagine one of his unrealized films would be about Joe Biden stealing the 2020 US Presidential Election via mass voter fraud.

Stuart Sutcliffe

Kissing as a human custom appears to predate the Ancient Egyptians. It has been documented in Ancient Sumerian and Egyptian sources as early as 2500 BCE (basically Old Kingdom Egypt). It is estimated that about 10% of the human population do not kiss, as it is not a cultural norm. (Source: LiveScience.com) But even cultures where kissing is discouraged in public (North Korea, Vietnam), kissing sometimes occurs in intimate settings. If you want to know more, I encourage you to read the Wikipedia entry on "Kiss (not the band)."

Andrew

I know that George loves mythology, so I wanted to throw out a movie recommendation. Check out The 13th Warrior. It's a retelling of the Grendel myth.

Shadows of Archonia

Regarding the passing mention of Spartans - real life Spartan soldiers would have been covered in bronze armor. It's one of the things that made them so formidable. A technological advantage. As I heard it, the reason they were naked in 300 is because that made it easier for Frank Miller to visually distinguish the characters from each other in the comic.

Sean Hennessy

There's this really old movie called aliens.

JoeNotCharles

"I wonder what the aliens will be like! Did they uplift humanity? Were they lonely?" Oh, George... It's a *Roland Emmerich* movie.

Theadora

NO sense of humor. ;-)

Adam Custer

You really should start the Stargate SG.1 TV show.

Angzarr

It is pretty funny that the Stargate mission team in the movie includes Harry Solomon. Both the Stargate series and 3rd Rock are a lot of fun, I'd love to see future reactions to them.

Jasbro

Yes im sure they have time to watch a 10 season show, i'd love that too since it would give me another reason to rewatch it but it wont happen, maybe they could do something similar to what PiB is doing with Star Trek just watching a few voted for episodes per season but i am not a fan of that.

Stugotz

Those other movies are science fiction, they're not supposed to be taken seriously.

Stache

After this movie, I really want them to react to the original Battlestar Galactica series.

Khalayx

I think there's a 0% chance of this happening but may as well comment that yes, I would join them on that ride for sure.

Stugotz

Wait who was racist, the aliens?

JBK405

No, the "Ancient Aliens" theories are racist because almost all of them posit that non-white people throughout the world aren't able to build their own structures or have their own civilizations. Aliens built the pyramids, aliens taught them agriculture, alien's gave them language, etc. because they aren't given enough credit to be able to do it themselves. Meanwhile, the people spinning these theories don't say the same things about all of the ancient European construction and language and agriculture. Many of these ancients structures we -- meaning historians -- do know exactly how they were built, or if not EXACTLY then pretty close. Sometimes we have the literal blueprints or construction records, or if not that at least poetical descriptions on monuments and in royal histories. But all of this information, including the records of the ancient civilizations themselves, are disregarded in favor of pseudo-scientific theories about how they were too "primitive" to have done this on their own. The contempt for non-white people is so pervasive in the community that I have trouble engaging with any of it in good fun anymore. Even when they do apply the same theories to Europe (For example, SPOILER, the "Stargate" TV series eventually reveals that another race of aliens taught the Romans Latin and how to build roads) it's fruit from the poisoned tree.

Reed James

The TV show retcons three things: this planet they go to is in our galaxy, the alien race are actual parasites and not that gray sort of alien Ra seemed to be, and Ra was not the last of his race but the supreme leader of his race. This leads to the power vacuum that kicks off the TV show which takes place a couple of years later. Another thing to note is the stargate in this movie has nine cheverons but uses only 7.

Darren Harrison

All the foreign worlds in the TV series looked like Canada

Logan Nelson

This comment has been deemed true... sadly...

Ben Schwartz

I couldn't finish it. The mix is terrible with you guys. I hear George at one level and Simone is at a higher volume and it just ruins it... even with my own copy. If I turn the volume up on you guys so I can hear George, I have to also hear Simone at about 100 decibels. I can't do it anymore. I'm sticking around for TNG, but that's about it for me.

TomGas2025

I don't have any soundproblems.

TomGas2025

Fun fact...the assistant of Katherines Father in egypt..the guy with the wihite hat is a german actor and he started in Germany with adds for Coffee...

Ben Schwartz

Yeah, it's probably just that I'm autistic or something when it comes to sound, volume etc.... I guess I'm just more sensitive to these things, I dunno.

JumpTroopC5

I am not sure if these comments are looked at for older videos but as a new patreon member and a fan of Stargate SGI (and Atlantis) i would highly recommend the tv series after star trek TNG is done. Keep in mind Stargate SG1 was on Showtime (if i remember correctly) for the beginning season or two and then went to SyFy channel. It progressively get better over seasons 3 - 10
