Ginger

Is this the theatrical version or the Director's cut? Edit: Ok, they mention it's the theatrical one.

droodly

Aside from the office (and Boston Legal, one of the best TV show ever), James Spader is Ultron

Jay Davis

For those of us that grew up through the 80s, James Spader was also tangentially part of The Brat Pack. More recently, he was the voice of Ultron in Age of Ultron. And he has what I assume must be a very successful TV show... it has 10 seasons.

JediLounger

Solid movie, but the shows are great. By far and away the best way to watch them is in broadcast order because there are so many crossover events, especially with SG-1 and Atlantis. So for the first seven seasons of SG-1, watch as normal. Starting with Season 8, you watch in machete order until the end of SG-1, then finish Atlantis. Then if you want to watch Stargate: Universe you can, but it is not as well regarded as the other two. It would take a while, but you guys would have lots of fun.

Ph4ZeD

had my copy all ready because I'm super hyped to watch this with you, but it's the theatrical version... I checked on piratebay, theres 1 torrent with 0 seeders for this version...

Ginger

I'd love for them to get into Stargate-SG1 as it's my favorite show but that would be a huge commitment, almost as much as watching all of Star Trek.

BigGuy209

it’s crazy that this movie is not rentable anywhere. I was only able to find it on Pluto TV and YouTube.

Joel the Human

I was able to watch it with a 7 day free trial to MGM+ through Amazon Prime for those looking for the movie.

Florian Geyer

So much childhood right now :D Someday we have to visit the SG-1 show <3

Astraeos

Oh how I would kill for this duo to watch SG-1... sigh. A man can hope and dream. It would also be hilarious to watch them point out all the Canada spots that are shot supposed to be American spots lol. Same goes for X-Files. One of these days y'all are gonna have to watch ONE of the big 90's Sci Fi shows. X-Files, TNG, Farscape or SG-1. Take your pick lol. It's just gotta happen. You can't be a complete pop cultural movie/TV person, whilst skipping all the great 90's Sci-Fi shows.

Stugotz

So yeah the alien was the last of his species, it was mentioned that they went extinct. I'm assuming that the soldiers under his command were former children that he raised. Remember he had a bunch of kids around him, I'm assuming he took kids from the village and raised them then they became his soldiers, that's why they were so loyal.

Kellen

Was looking forward to this so much. Great reaction you two. Really hope you give Stargate SG1 a go at some point. It really expands the lore of the universe. Even better as a fellow Cdn, the show was shot in Canada, in BC actually. The cast is also mostly Cdn actors.

Shawnie

The correct version is also on Tubitv for free if anyone is looking

Odd Thomas

It's a rare good guy role for Spader who until that time mostly played the slimey guy in films like Pretty in Pink or Mannequin (which is an awesome movie). I never watched the Stargate TV show because it didn't have Russell or Spader; this was back when effects were pretty crappy on TV shows unless you were Star Trek or X-Files.

Amos T Fairchild

The many years of great TV series that followed this film explores many of these interesting issues you guys have mentioned. Lol.

MrTickleTrunk

This is the theatrical version (1h 56m), not the more common DVD versions (2h 1m or 2h 9m). You can find it online through MGM+ on AMAZON PRIME. Good luck finding it any other way.

G Lam

This IS a unique idea for a film, and it is done very well. But SG-1 took a good idea, scaled it down to something more realistic (is that a correct term in Sci-Fi?), but then scaled it out, and really nailed the mythos. The canon they created is incredible! Easily comparable to what ST:TNG did. This movie is like ST:TOS, they introduced some things hard to play with, a couple of things that don't make sense, and then the TNG/SG-1 guys came along, and removed some little things to be able to make something awesome and timeless. But I reckon SG-1/SG:A are about 90% true to this movie. In a nutshell (and not really spoilers), they changed the stargates to a network travelling within the Milky Way, not across the known universe, they elaborate on Ra, his species, the origin of the gates, the soldiers that fight for them, the humans one the ship, the humans on the planets, EVERYTHING. --- And yes, I would LOVE to see reactions to SG-1 and Atlantis, no-reaction channel I've seen actually cover them... But I understand why these guys might not want to cover 10+5 (+2, +1) series of a sci-fi show. Hopefully the movie piqued their interest enough. Regarding James Spader & Kirk Douglas... I think they were replaced brilliantly. The show wouldn't be anywhere near as good without RDA and Shanks

Spacedone

It's been a while since I last watch this movie. I don't remember all the purring noises... :D

REDR58

Aside from some of the other movies and TV shows mentioned featuring James Spader, I would highly recommend the following: Less Than Zero (1987), Wall Street (1987), Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), Bob Roberts (1992), Dream Lover (1993), Secretary (2002) and Lincoln (2012).

Khalayx

Stargate SG-1 is the viola to Star Trek TNG's violin.

WayneC

French Stewart (Ferretti) is the actor that Simone recognised from "3rd Rock from the Sun". Erick Avari (Kasuf, the community elder) and Alexis Cruz (Skaara, the main boy) both appeared in a few episodes of the Stargate SG1 series.

D. T. Nelson

His first big hit, and the movie when Roland Emmerich was at his most scientifically accurate... which isn't saying much. After Stargate his "dedication" to science and verisimilitude spiraled further and further away from reality. That isn't to say that his movies aren't fun to watch, it just means you have to check your scepticism at the door and wrap yourself in a cloak of suspension of disbelief.

Roby J

Stargate SG-1 is absolutely one of the greatest Sci-Fi shows of all time. It's a bit daunting at 10 seasons with most being 22 episodes, but whenever you guys are ready for a long series I hope this is on your radar.

Christopher Feiertag

Seeing your reaction to this movie makes me wish for the both of you to react to „The Crying Game“ in the future. The reason for that shall not be mentioned here, because it’s spoiler territory for „The Crying Game“. So please, anyone who already saw it: don‘t spoil it in the comments.

REDR58

As long as the movie’s universe is self-consistent, I don’t care how realistic or unrealistic it is.

Michal Novotny

Great reaction, glad you enjoyed the movie. I remain hopeful you’ll give the TV show a try someday 🤞🏻

Nicodemus Archleone

Loved the reaction and whilst I'd love for you to watch the TV show, realistically a franchise that had 354 episodes across three separate series isn't likely. However, I can give you a quick abridged version of the lore if you'd like. Spoilers below:

Sir Jimmothy

The stargate's effect is way more simple than you'd think - they filmed something falling into a glass / tub of water, and just turned that footage sideways. It's really effective. As for the overall mythology, you're almost correct - that alien, Ra, was the head of the System Lords, a hierarchy of others like him maintaining their version of order in the galaxy, with more planets of human slaves. The guards are revealed to be a different race of genetically modified humans that are actually host to young symbiotes before they develop and take hosts of their own. There's so much in the wider universe; would be interesting to see what you think of at least the pilot episode :]

Raven Dark

Great reaction, guys.. I'll echo what a lot of others said here and say, you two have got to watch Stargate SG1, the original series based on this film. It's fantastic.

Nicodemus Archleone

The TV show retconns a couple things from the movie to make it work. Ra was not the last of his race. He was the first of his kind (his species is named the Goa'uld) to discover Earth and take a human host. However, the Goa'uld are the dominant species in our galaxy with an empire spanning many thousands of worlds. Each world connected by a network of Stargates. Their society is Feudal so it's not so much an "empire" as a fuck tonne of warlords fighting amongst themselves for power. The most powerful Goa'uld are usually ancient and have each taken on the persona of gods from ancient Earth cultures. Their individual armies and worlds evoking whatever Earth culture they chose to emulate. Everything from Egyptian, Greek, Mayan, Hindu...etc. However, the basic concept from the movie prevails. The Goa'uld transplanted humans from Earth to be used as slaves.

Scott Orr

So glad you guys got to see this! The series is great too if you ever decided to continue.

djKENTO

Personally I hate all ancient alien theory movies. The nonsense of "these people weren't capable of this... must have been aliens" really bugs me and always comes off as kinda racist. But for you? I'll watch.

MrTickleTrunk

The TV show is 100x better than this movie as well :) 11 seasons of SG-1, multiple TV movies and multiple spin-off shows can't be wrong.

Khalayx

When the cat started purring the first time during Daniel Jackson's lecture in the beginning I thought for a moment that it was a snore track hah

Brendan Rafferty

The TV show, Stargate SG-1, is fantastic. The first season starts slow, but once the writers really get into expanding the mythology of the stargate universe, it really takes off. To begin, and to answer your question, the concept is that Ra, the alien in the film, was not the last of his kind… that was just the story his people learned because Ra’s ego made him present himself as the only god. The show is essentially a well made Star Trek set in modern times as we explore strange new worlds and civilizations wile operating out of a base in Cheyenne mountain It’s also the only scifi show where it makes sense why we keep encountering humans on so many other worlds… because they were taken from Earth thousands of years earlier and spread out as slave labor. The interesting thing is to see how many of these human civilizations evolved away from Earth. One in particular is centuries more advanced than Earth because they didn’t have our dark ages or religious repression of science

Thomas Yanez

I always get nervous when they watch something I love, not knowing if they'll go into it seriously, or end up just laughing away the camp and missing half the story. I'm glad they enjoyed it and talk about the potential. While it is unlikely they are going to actually tackle a 10-year, 200+ episode show, much less it's spin-off shows and movies, if they do, I really hope they can endure through the opening seasons to get into the meat of the show. After the horrible take on "The Expanse" and not letting the show hit its stride, I'd worry that it could happen again with SG-1. Hopefully the enjoyment they got from the movie, and understanding the potential that the show has with the open-ended "now we have a Stargate" premise could keep them in it long enough for it to stick. While I'm as anti-spoiler as one can get, I will say that another thing the show has going for it is that they were willing to retcon some things, such as the true nature of the aliens and the Stargate coordinate system to give them a more workable and consistent base to build a universe on. When they were trying to figure out the show, I like to think that the show runners were talking about Star Trek and eventually decided on "Fuck the Prime Directive - let's have some fun!"

Vwlss Nvwls

I always loved the movie, though I thought it could of been better. It kind of turned into a typical action movie at the end. However, I love that is spawned three great series. Stargate SG-1 is my all time favorite t.v. series. Stargate Atlantis is a close second (after the Buffyverse), and Stargate Universe is great, but sad since it ended so quickly.

Itbewhatitbe

if they decide to do SG tv show, please for the love of god dont ruin it for them like you and others did with Expanse by telling them "no youre reacting wrong" or "no youre SUPPOSED to feel a different way towards a character!" let them feel what they feel and react as they do for real, not what you expected them to react.

Thomas Yanez

Aww, just finished, and was disappointed they didn't include E.T. in their Alien Battle Royale...

FranciscoGios

A Fire In The Sky is a great “alien” movie, if you guys want more alien stuff. I hope we are not competing of who has a long user name 😂

pinkdino99

The tribal leader plays the SETI guy at the beginning of Independence Day. I started the TV show recently and it is WEIRD. Very low production values, really feels like budget Trek. And it goes full on nudity and body horror in the first episode. I made it through four episodes before calling time. A very underrated James Spader movie is called Two Days in the Valley which was an ensemble movie thriller around the time of Pulp Fiction.

Basil Hazzard

I would absoulutly love for you to do the series. However, it ran for ten yeas and had two other spin-off series. SG1 is 215 episodes by itself. It does do some -small- retcon on the main alien species. George will LOVE the world building and lore the series creats.

Grimbane42

I second watching it as well even to see the progression of VFX over the years. It is really neat to see the improvements. Stargate is my favorite TV series of all time, hence why I have the gate address for Abydos on my arm. If you watch this show I can guarantee you I will be with you every step of the way watching it.

Farbod

Ugh. Sourcing a theatrical cut sucks for this one...

Shaka, When the Walls Fell

You definitely need to do Stargate SG-1. Though they re-cast Kurt Russell with Richard Dean Anderson (MacGuyver) and James Spader with Michael Shanks it doesn't take away anything. The humor is great, the action is great, the other characters that join in are great, and you won't believe how deep it intertwines with various mythologies of Earth history.

Superpotroast

The pilot is originally from Showtime, and Showtime wanted the nudity..The showrunners didn't, so there is a censored version that ran on Sci-fi channel and that is the only nudity in the whole show, I believe..The body horror comes from the fact that the aliens are parasites and use humans as hosts and incubators, but the show tones down on showing it too much, for the most part.. Season 1 has some bad episodes but if you can make it through them, the show is very much worth your time..It's one of the classic sci-fi shows of all time, and with all three shows SG1, SGA, SGU you're looking at over 300 episodes.. And yeah, it's low budget for most of its run, but you gotta remember that 90s sci-fi didn't get the big budget money like shows do nowadays..

Vwlss Nvwls

I would love to see you guys do the series Stargate SG-1. It would be my sixth time watching all 10 seasons again, but I am so here for it. And Stargate Atlantis is well worth the watch as well. So is Universe, though that one is bitter sweet. And Michael Shanks, who plays Daniel Jackson in the series, does a phenomenal job, especially at the start when he plays the character the way James Spader did before making the character his own. Heads up, however, if you watch the series, be sure to watch the episode 1 & 2 "Children of the Gods" and not the stand alone movie "Children of the Gods", because the movie does not leave the story open for a continuing series. Not even sure why they released it that way, when they already had a full season or two.

REDR58

It’s always interesting how visual effects for these sorts of movies are done when the then CG is limited or was simply not available. It’s why I’m particularly interested in Simone and George reacting to Tron which is a movie that features a lot of CG-looking visuals, but a lot of it, the majority in fact, is all hand drawn animation, in-camera effects and the like.

Vwlss Nvwls

The fact that James Spader did not like the script, but still did such an amazing acting job, is a real testament to his acting abilities. I have always liked him, and somehow knowing this bit of trivia makes me like him even more.

Mister_Momus

I think if George and Simone can make it to season 2 of SG-1 they'd really get to enjoying it, even if they don't watch it on the channel.

Chase Lonnergan

What I really want to know is... How in the actual fuck did you FIND a copy of the theatrical cut!!!??? I own the DVD, it's the DC. I searched online, all DC. Nobody has the theatrical cut. I have to buy the theatrical cut just to watch along with this. It is hilarious to me.

Blake Gorf

I could not find one either lol, but watching along with the director's cut was pretty easy compared to times I've tried with other movies. It pretty much only has extended scenes; I just had to fast forward my copy several times during the watch along.

John

An underrated movie with Kirk Russell I would recommend is Executive Decision

Paul Peavler

I recently saw a synopsis of Stargate: “Your gods are false, here are some machine guns I guess.”

Logan Kerlee

Good take on that George! xD hahahaha Oooooh!! I'm so happy that you both are curious about the tv show! It truly is an amazing watch that's so much fun! Oooh - golly! The show has so much to explore. :) I love how neither of them are considering other places.. oh wait! Simone just mentioned the idea! :) Not exactly right, George. Yup! Different combos will dial into new and different places! :) hahahahhahaha, wow! I've got no idea on how this relates to Independence Day but obviously there are things tying them together. Waiting for you guys to mention Star Trek! xD Come on.. lmao, I'd like it if Simone watched AVP on here. :) hahahahaha, love James Spader's comment! xD He's a cool dude. :) The soundtrack is HEAVILY used! I'm big happy about that. :) lmao, good call George on the dog/horse! :) VERY happy that you guys had a great time watching this! I was fairly positive that you would enjoy the ride. :) If you both enjoyed James Spader in this I'd like to recommend that you both check the show The Blacklist out! It's a lot of fun. :) I'd like to see it on a poll, actually. :)Stargate - 1994 This movie/series IS SO MUCH FUN! Oh wow! You both are coming in on this COMPLETELY blind! Trevor S Bright

James Spader played Ultron in Avengers 2. He's finally reprising the role in Vision's Disney+ show, whereas another guy voiced Ultron Variants in Dr Strange 2 & What If

Pearl Jam

I’m torn. On the one hand I love Star Trek and have been dying for you to start it. On the other hand, Stargate is so much better. Now that you’ve seen this, I’m hoping you consider watching the series and doing so sooner rather than later. Maybe alternating between Star Trek and Stargate? However it works out, you guys aren’t gonna run low on content any time soon and I’m here for it!

Donna Castellano

Once you finish TOS, maybe do Stargate the TV series? My favorite is Stargate: Atlantis but SG1 is definitely great.

Logan Kerlee

I was bummed to not hear anything about any of the Star Trek races! xD The Borg would totally dominate everybody - though. Assimilation is key.

Rupert Purcat

Nah, the Trek must go on. with all the movies.

Brian's Dog

Now you will know James Spader as the 'The Stargate guy', until you happen to see Secretary. Then he will be 'The Secretary guy'. It happened to all of us.

Eric Wilson

"A tv show" 3 TV shows and multiple movies.

Eric Wilson

They recon a bit for the TV show.

megamoo chilli

I love this film but the first activation scene and all the tech talk hasn't aged well. The part that always gets me is that Jackson figures out the symbols are star constellations - apparently the first person to figure this out - and then they walk downstairs and there's already a galaxy wide map ready to go. They say they haven't gotten to the seventh symbol before, but they already have MOLECULAR DECONSTRUCTION on the computer, and a nifty ramp all ready. Obviously when they made the film they didn't think the attention to detail was important and the viewers will just accept the technobabble and go along for the ride.

windyWin

I had a slight obsession with this movie when I was a kid in the 90s. Haven't seen it in a while. Gotta love it anytime they do the "Enhance!" trope.

Ph4ZeD

All Roland Emmerich/Michael Bay films are like this though

Gary Fixler

If you want to see more of Kurt Russell's army hair, I'm throwing in another vote for soldier. It's fun.

Rupert Purcat

I think you would like 'John Carter from Mars' - highly criticized, box office flop, but a movie I really enjoy like Star Gate

W T

Future Man has some insight into the modalities of kissing across cultures...

Jonas Buckner

George, based on a survey of 168 human cultures, only 46% were find to kiss for romantic reasons. Some that don't do it romantically still kiss children for bonding or even platonic kiss between adults for bonding or conflict resolution. A few don't do kissing at all and find it gross.

Nate Terry

this would be a fun show for you guys to explore. If you enjoyed this stargate concept so much, then you will love the show. personally i think the show is much better than this film....only because it's more "modern" (for it's time). I'd say the show, although is starts off in the 90's, is timeless. it expands so much lore you wouldn't even imagine where the story goes lol. it was so good that in produced 2 spinoff series "Stargate Atlantis" (multiple seasons) and "Stargate Universe."

Matt Rodgers

It's a long running series, but I'd love to see you guys react to Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis. It has so much to like about it and it has something for everyone.

gobmob2000

You two should definitely watch the show, other people have commented and gave more details so I won't repeat it, but you will enjoy it.

Neil

Yes, that would be perfect. Alternating between Star Trek and Stargate would maintain good variety and would probably attract a wider audience to the channel.

Poddington

Had my first date seeing this movie. I can't remember her name, but was the friend to my friends sister and was also one of the first times I'd been to the Cinema without parents. I only remember the film, which was amazing, and eating popcorn.

Purple Dragon Knight

"Does the tv show expand on the movie?" Understatement! It squeezed 11 seasons out of a 2 hour movie. One of the best parts of the show is the world building. But the best part of the show are the characters. So much fun! But 11 seasons. You'll need to do several a week. Or I am sure many of us will be happy to tell you which filler episodes to skip.

Orphan Crippler

Can someone please tell me where to torrent this since I cant find this version anywhere...

DuplicitousDuck

I've watched Stargate SG-1 an unhealthy amount and I am very ready to relapse. Tingles when that familiar music kicked in. Oddly enough, I was never that into the movie. I fell asleep the first couple of times I tried to watch it in my youth. Now I mostly appreciate it as the progenitor of one of my all time favorite sci-fi series.

Grimbane42

The problem with skipping most filler episodes is a lot of those episodes expand on important secondary characters to give you more context for their stories. I'm also a completionist so its hard for me to skip. Understandable however that other folks find some of the episodes fillery, they do have several lol

I liked the movie and was amazed they somehow found an actor that looks so identical to James Spader, i actually thought it was him on the show during the first season, the show is one of my comfort shows that i go back and rewatch many times.

Paul Mix

For some of us he was the "sex, lies, and videotape guy" even before that. :)

I would also suggest the show "Stargate SG-1". It's a similar style as the Star Trek series in terms of more or less independent episodes, but still with a red line, which becomes stronger over time and in my personal opinion is much more interesting and funnier that the Star Trek series (which I also like - just for clarification :P). I could imagine that people would like to watch it too. 🙂

Thank you Simone for describing Third Rock From the Sun, which was on when I was a kid in the 90s, as "a really old sitcom"

David Lonewolf Wright

They really did a lot of the gun cocking sound in this film and I never really noticed it being so overdone before. The Stargate TV show is great and I think you would like it a lot.
